About Comet Signal: Score After Dark

Comet Signal: Score After Dark is a rally game played on the boardwalk of a floating carnival at night. Above you hangs the marquee, a big sign built of dark round bulbs in a shape that changes with every show: a ribbon, a grand arch, a chequerboard, a diamond, a big wheel, a comet. Under it, a swing board slides from side to side, and one glowing comet is all you have to light it with. Where the comet lands on the board decides the angle it leaves at, so every bounce is an aim.

Each bulb the comet strikes lights up and keeps your chain alive for two and a half seconds. Plain bulbs take one strike. Amber glass bulbs take two, and when they break they let go of a glowing cinder that drops straight down toward the board: catch it and the board dims and slows, slip past it and it is a close one. A gold runner bulb patrols the top of the sign for a big score. String ten strikes together and the comet becomes a Skyrocket that pierces the bulbs for a few seconds instead of bouncing off them.

Every show has a power clock. Light a whole row and it gives some time back; let it run out and the lights go dark, a spark is gone and the next show begins. Three sparks and five shows make a night. Each night adds a rule of its own, such as a sideways breeze or a narrower board, today’s sign is the same for everyone, and your best run of it plays beside you as a ghost board.

How to play

  1. Slide the board with the left and right arrows or A and D, a controller’s left stick, the on-screen pair, the mouse, or by dragging a finger across the stage.
  2. The comet leaves the board at an angle set by where it lands: the middle sends it straight up, the edges send it out wide.
  3. Light every bulb of the sign before the power clock runs out. A finished row gives a few seconds back.
  4. Amber glass bulbs take two hits and drop a cinder. Slide out from under it: a cinder on the board dims and slows it.
  5. Strike a bulb at least every two and a half seconds to keep the chain. Ten in a chain launches a Skyrocket.
  6. Press Space, Enter or Launch to send the comet off the board early.

Frequently asked questions

How do I aim the comet?

By where it lands on the swing board. The middle sends it straight up and the edges send it out at a wide angle. Move the board so the comet meets the part you want.

What do the amber glass bulbs do?

They take two hits, and when they break they drop a glowing cinder. A cinder that lands on the board dims it and slows it for a moment and breaks your chain, so slide out of its way. One that falls past close by is worth a few points.

What is a Skyrocket?

Strike ten bulbs within two and a half seconds of each other and the comet turns into a Skyrocket for a few seconds. It flies through the bulbs instead of bouncing off them, and every strike scores double.

What happens when the power clock runs out?

The lights go dark, you lose a spark, and the next show starts. Lighting a whole row gives time back, and a sign lit with time to spare earns a bonus.

Can I slow it down?

Yes. In Settings, Pace: Relaxed runs at three-quarter speed, and Assist widens the board, slows the comet a little and gives the power clock more time.
