About Comet Pulse: Arcade Weather

Comet Pulse: Arcade Weather is a one-button ride across the plains in front of a storm-chasing broadcast. You are a small camera skimmer rolling over rolling hills of a storm front, and you only ever do one thing: hold the button to dive, let go to fly. Dive and you stick to the ground, speed up down every slope and drop fast out of the air. Hold long enough and let go, and the skimmer pops up off the ground, higher the longer you held. The hills do the rest.

Every pick-up is a choice about height. Film reels hug the ground: easy points that keep your chain going. Storm gates hang over the valleys, five times as valuable and worth three links of the chain, but you have to be in the air to fly through them. And the sky punishes both heights. Lightning strikes the ground in a circle that flashes before it cracks, so stay on the ground there and you are hit, fly over it and you are safe. Hail falls through the air, so stay down there. Each hit costs one of your three signal bars.

The weather changes every round of the five-round broadcast. Wind pushes the skimmer while it flies, so you have to judge the gates with the gusts. Rain brings more lightning and hail. Fog hides what lies ahead, though the gates glow through it. The last round is a storm with all three. Gates, smooth landings and close calls with the lightning build a chain, and a big enough chain opens the Eye of the Storm: the sky parts, the weather pauses and everything scores double for seven seconds. Each night adds a rule of its own, today’s ride is the same for everyone, and your best run of it flies beside you as a ghost.

How to play

  1. Hold Space, S, the down arrow, Ⓐ, the Dive button, or the mouse or a finger anywhere to dive. Let go to fly.
  2. Dive down the slopes to gain speed. Hold for a moment in a valley and let go: the longer the hold, the higher the pop.
  3. Film reels on the ground are easy points and keep your chain alive. Storm gates over the valleys pay much more and need you in the air.
  4. Lightning strikes the ground in a circle that flashes first: fly over it. Hail falls through the air: stay down. Each hit costs a signal bar.
  5. Dive just before you land, in line with the slope, for a smooth landing and a speed boost.
  6. Gates, smooth landings and close calls build the Eye of the Storm: the sky parts and everything scores double.

Controls

Frequently asked questions

How do I fly higher?

Dive for longer before you let go. A short tap pops you a little, a hold of half a second pops you high. A steep slope and a fast skimmer help too.

Why am I hit while I am on the ground?

Lightning strikes the ground in a circle that flashes first. Pop up and fly over it. Hail does the opposite: it only hits you in the air.

What is a smooth landing?

Dive just before you touch down, with your path in line with the slope under you. It gives a speed boost, points and a link in the chain.

What opens the Eye of the Storm?

Reels keep the chain alive but do not build it. Storm gates, smooth landings and close calls with lightning do. Enough of them in one chain parts the sky.

Can I slow it down?

Yes. In Settings, Pace: Relaxed runs at three-quarter speed, Assist shrinks the lightning and warns longer, and Toggle instead of hold makes the dive press-to-dive, press-to-fly.
