Looking into a domain name and the records behind it

For anyone choosing, buying, moving or defending a domain: a founder looking for a name, a site owner whose new record has not shown up yet, an IT team auditing a portfolio before renewals, and a security team watching for look-alike domains. The lookups ask public DNS resolvers and the registries themselves.

How to choose

Choose by what you want to know:

A new DNS record can take as long as its old TTL to be seen everywhere, so a propagation check soon after a change may still show the old answer in some places.

The main tools, compared

Tool When to pick it What you give it What you get Works offline Stays on your device
Domain Availability Checker Asks DNS and the official registries whether a name is still unregistered, for many domain endings in one search. URL, domain or IP The full result No No
WHOIS Lookup (RDAP) Fetches the registration record of a domain, an IP address or an AS number from the registry that holds it, over RDAP. URL, domain or IP The full result No No
Bulk WHOIS / RDAP Lookup (Domain Portfolio Audit) Premium tool Audits a whole portfolio at once, listing each domain’s registrar, key dates and transfer locks in a table you can sort. URL, domain or IP Free preview: the summary counts of every domain, with the first half of the table (up to 10 rows) and its findings; a single domain is shown with its results hidden No No
Punycode Converter Pro tool Converts international domain names to their xn-- form and back, naming the script of each label and warning about look-alikes. URL, domain or IP Free preview: every count and the verdict of each name that needs a look in full, with the first rows of the conversion table (up to 10) Yes Yes
Lookalike Domain Finder Ultimate tool Builds the misspellings, swapped endings and confusable letters of your domain, then flags the variants that already resolve or are registered. URL, domain or IP Free preview: every lookalike checked and counted, with the first registered ones and their details (up to 10) No No
Reverse DNS Lookup Premium tool Lists the PTR names of an IP address and confirms whether each name points back to the same address. URL, domain or IP Free preview: part of the real result’s rows; the full report and its exports open with a pass No No
DNSSEC Checker Pro tool Compares the keys published at the parent with the zone’s signatures and their validity, and shows whether resolvers can authenticate it. URL, domain or IP Free preview: part of the real result’s rows; the full report and its exports open with a pass No No
Domain Age & Expiry Checker Pro tool Reads the registry data of up to 25 names and gives each one’s registration age, renewal deadline and current holder. URL, domain or IP Free preview: the summary counts, with the first domains of the table (up to 10) in full; a single domain shows with its age, dates and registrar hidden No No

Worked example: the DNS form of münchen.de

A company wants to use the German city name münchen.de in a link and in its certificate, both of which need the ASCII form of the name.

  1. The name has two labels, münchen and de, and only the first contains a character outside ASCII, the ü.

  2. Punycode keeps the ASCII letters of that label, mnchen, and encodes the ü and its position as the suffix 3ya.

  3. With the xn-- prefix that marks an encoded label, the name becomes xn--mnchen-3ya.de, the form DNS and certificates use.

  4. The converter reports that every letter is Latin and that the name resembles munchen, so it is not a mix of scripts made to deceive.

Questions

Why does my new DNS record show in some places and not others?

Resolvers keep an answer for as long as its TTL allows, so until those copies expire they still give the old record. The propagation checker asks several public resolvers at once.

What is RDAP?

The registries’ modern replacement for WHOIS, which returns registration data in a structured form. The WHOIS lookup uses it and reads the answer from the registry that holds the name.

Can someone register a domain that looks like mine?

Yes, with a typo, another ending or letters from another script that look the same. The look-alike finder lists such variants and flags the ones already taken.

Does an available result mean I can buy the name?

It means the registries show no registration now; the name still has to be bought from a registrar, and premium or reserved names may cost more or be withheld.
