About the UK Vehicle Tax (VED) Calculator — Car Tax by CO2 and List Price

Work out the UK vehicle tax (Vehicle Excise Duty, VED) of a car, van, motorcycle or tricycle from the details on its V5C logbook. A car first registered from 1 April 2017 pays a first tax payment by its CO2 figure, then the standard rate, plus the expensive car supplement of £440 a year for five years when its list price was over £40,000 (over £50,000 for an electric car registered from 1 April 2025). Older cars pay by CO2 band (A to M) or, before 1 March 2001, by engine size; vans, motorcycles and tricycles have their own rates.

The calculator shows what each way of paying costs — a single payment, 12 months by Direct Debit, monthly Direct Debit or 6 months — and the total for the years you expect to keep the vehicle, with each year’s rate. Every rate is GOV.UK’s own figure. Without a pass, the free preview shows the next 12 months of vehicle tax in full, with your tax class, band and supplement rule and the first rows of each table; a Pro pass unlocks every figure, the summary and the CSV.

How to use it

  1. Choose the vehicle: car, van, motorcycle or tricycle. For a new car that is not registered yet, tick New car to include its first tax payment.
  2. Enter the date of first registration from the V5C (section B), and the fuel. The page then asks only for what changes the rate: the CO2 figure, the engine size, the list price or a van’s Euro standard.
  3. For a car registered from 1 April 2017, add the list price when new if it was over £40,000 (£50,000 for an electric car registered from 1 April 2025).
  4. Choose how you pay, the day the next tax period starts and how many years you expect to keep the vehicle.
  5. Read the tax for the next 12 months, the ways to pay and the year-by-year table. Copy the summary or download the CSV of every tax period — with a pass, or after unlocking this result.

Examples

A new petrol car, 128g/km, list price £32,000

A new hybrid at 128g/km with a list price of £45,000, kept seven years
Result
£455 first, then £640 a year (£200 + £440 supplement) for five years, then £200: £3,855.
A diesel car of 140g/km that does not meet RDE2, registered new
Result
First tax payment £1,410 (£560 if it meets RDE2), then the standard £200.
A 2015 petrol car at 135g/km (band E), paid monthly by Direct Debit
Result
£210 a year in 12 payments of £17.50, against £200 paid at once.
A new electric car with a list price of £55,000
Result
£10 first, then £640 a year for five years (the supplement applies above £50,000), then £200.

Common uses

  • Checking the vehicle tax of a used car before you buy it, from the details in the advert or the V5C.
  • Comparing two new cars whose list prices sit either side of the £40,000 supplement threshold.
  • Deciding between paying yearly and monthly by Direct Debit.
  • Budgeting the tax of a car, van or motorcycle for the years you plan to keep it.

Cars registered

  • First tax payment (paid when the car is registered, it covers 12 months): from £10 at 0g/km through £115 (1 to 50g/km), £455 (111 to 130g/km) and £560 (131 to 150g/km) to £5,690 over 255g/km. Diesel cars that do not meet the Real Driving Emissions 2 (RDE2) standard pay the next band up.
  • From the second payment: £200 a year for every fuel — petrol, diesel, alternative fuel (hybrids, bioethanol, LPG) and electric.
  • Expensive car supplement: £440 a year on top (£640 in all) for five years from the second time the car is taxed, when the list price — the published price before the car was first registered, before any discount — was over £40,000. For an electric car registered from 1 April 2025 the threshold is £50,000; an electric car registered before 1 April 2025 never pays it.

The tables are on GOV.UK’s vehicle tax rate tables.

Older cars, vans, motorcycles and tricycles

  • Cars registered from 1 March 2001 to 31 March 2017 pay by CO2 band, from band A (up to 100g/km, £20 a year) to band M (over 255g/km, £790); band K also covers cars over 225g/km registered before 23 March 2006 (bands A to M).
  • Cars and vans registered before 1 March 2001 pay by engine size: £230 a year up to 1,549cc, £375 above (older vehicles).
  • Vans up to 3,500kg registered from 1 March 2001 pay £360 a year, zero emission vans included; Euro 4 vans registered from 1 March 2003 to 31 December 2006 and Euro 5 vans registered from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2010 pay £140.
  • Motorcycles: £27 up to 150cc and for zero emission motorcycles, £59 (151 to 400cc), £90 (401 to 600cc), £125 over 600cc. Tricycles up to 450kg: £27 up to 150cc or zero emission, £125 for the rest (other rates).
  • Historic vehicles built before 1 January 1986 pay no vehicle tax, but you must apply for the exemption (historic vehicles).

Monthly, 6-monthly or yearly: what each costs

Paying 12 months at once by Direct Debit costs the same as a single 12 month payment. GOV.UK adds a 5% surcharge to monthly and 6-monthly Direct Debit (Direct Debit payments), and a single 6 month payment costs 10% more than half the yearly rate. For a car at the £200 standard rate that is £210 a year monthly (12 payments of £17.50), £210 in two 6-monthly Direct Debits of £105, or £220 in two single 6 month payments of £110. Some rates have no 6 month payment at all (bands A to C, motorcycles and tricycles up to 150cc).

The year-by-year table prices each tax period at the rate for the vehicle on the day the period starts, so a car whose supplement ends during the years you keep it drops to the standard rate from the first period that starts after its five years.

Electric cars

Electric and other zero emission cars pay vehicle tax: £10 for the first tax payment of a car registered from 1 April 2025, then the £200 standard rate. A zero emission car registered from 1 March 2001 to 31 March 2017 pays the band A rate of £20.

The government plans an Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from 1 April 2028: 3p a mile for battery electric cars and 1.5p a mile for plug-in hybrids, paid alongside vehicle tax. It is not law yet, so this calculator leaves it out.

Official sources

Limitations

  • The rates are GOV.UK’s current rates. The government can change them, so the years after the first are an estimate; a tax period that started before 1 April 2026 had the rates before these, and the calculator does not price it.
  • Motorhomes, heavy goods vehicles, buses and trade licences are not covered; disabled drivers’ and other exemptions are not applied — check them on GOV.UK.
  • The calculator starts the supplement’s five years on the car’s first anniversary, or on the day a car under a year old is taxed by its next keeper; DVLA’s record of your car decides.
  • An estimate of tax you owe, not tax advice: the DVLA reminder (V11) or the online tax service shows the amount for your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, UK Vehicle Tax (VED) Calculator — Car Tax by CO2 and List Price shows the next 12 months of vehicle tax in full, with your tax class, band and supplement rule and the first rows of each table; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Do electric cars pay car tax now?

Yes. An electric car registered from 1 April 2025 pays £10 for its first tax payment, then the £200 standard rate, plus the £440 supplement for five years if its list price was over £50,000. One registered from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2025 pays the standard rate without the supplement, and one registered from 1 March 2001 to 31 March 2017 pays £20 (band A).

What is the expensive car supplement?

An extra £440 a year for cars registered from 1 April 2017 whose list price was over £40,000 (£50,000 for an electric car registered from 1 April 2025). It is paid for five years from the second time the car is taxed, so a car at the standard rate pays £640 a year in those years. The list price is the published price before the car was first registered, before discounts — not what you paid for it second-hand.

Is it cheaper to pay car tax monthly or yearly?

Yearly. A single 12 month payment and 12 months by Direct Debit cost the same; monthly and 6-monthly Direct Debit add 5%, and a single 6 month payment adds 10%. At the £200 standard rate, monthly Direct Debit costs £210 a year.

Where do I find the CO2 figure and the registration date?

On the V5C logbook: the date of first registration is in section B and the CO2 figure in section V.7. For a new car, the dealer or the manufacturer’s specification gives the CO2 figure and the list price.

What happens to the tax when I sell the vehicle?

Once DVLA knows the vehicle has a new keeper, the tax is cancelled and you get a refund for any full months left, sent to the name and address on the log book. A Direct Debit is cancelled automatically. The 5% Direct Debit surcharge and the 10% surcharge on a single 6 month payment are not refunded (GOV.UK).

Is a car over 40 years old exempt?

A vehicle built before 1 January 1986 is exempt (when the build date is not known, one first registered before 8 January 1986), but the exemption is not automatic: you apply for it (historic vehicles). The calculator treats a vehicle registered before 8 January 1986 as historic.
