About the Do I Need a UK Tax Return? Checker
Find out whether you must send a Self Assessment tax return to HMRC for a tax year, and why. Answer a few questions about your work, pension, property, savings, dividends, gains and Child Benefit; the checker applies the 19 reasons HMRC gives for a return, from self-employed income over the £1,000 trading allowance to Capital Gains Tax to pay, and lists every one that applies, not only the first. If you need no return, it says which untaxed income to tell HMRC about instead.
You also get the deadlines for that tax year: registering by 5 October, a paper return by 31 October, the online return and the tax by 31 January and the second payment on account by 31 July, each with the days left, and for sole traders and landlords whether Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies. Your answers stay in your browser.
Without a pass, the free preview shows whether you must send a return, with the first of your deadlines; a Pro pass unlocks the rest: every reason, what to tell HMRC, all the deadlines with a calendar file, the summary to copy and printing.
How to use it
- Choose the tax year: the one that has ended (whose return is due by 31 January) or the current one, to plan ahead.
- Answer each question; new ones appear when an answer needs them (more about self-employment, a student loan, Child Benefit and whose income is higher).
- Read the verdict and the reasons, then the deadlines and the days left for each.
- With a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, copy the summary, download the deadlines as a calendar file or print them; without one the page shows a free preview.
- If you need a return and have not sent one before, register for Self Assessment on GOV.UK in good time: HMRC confirms it by sending your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
Examples
Yes: self-employed income over £1,000 before expenses. Register by 5 October after the tax year, file online and pay by 31 January.
No: banks report the interest and HMRC collects any tax through the tax code.
No return for the £2,000 profit (£2,500 or less after expenses and £10,000 or less before): tell HMRC instead.
Yes, unless you pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge through your tax code: the partner with the higher adjusted net income pays it. If your partner’s income is higher, the charge is theirs.
Yes: Capital Gains Tax to pay is reported on a Self Assessment return.
Common uses
- Starting a side business, freelancing or selling online and wondering whether HMRC needs a return.
- Letting a property for the first time.
- Selling shares, crypto or a second home at a gain.
- Checking whether the High Income Child Benefit Charge means a return.
- Planning next year’s deadlines in a calendar.
Who must send a return
You must send a return for a tax year (6 April to 5 April) if HMRC asks you to, or if in that year you were self-employed as a sole trader with more than £1,000 of income before expenses, a partner in a business partnership, had Capital Gains Tax to pay, had to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge and do not pay it through PAYE, or are an off-payroll worker repaying a student loan (GOV.UK). HMRC’s checker adds: UK property income over £2,500 after expenses or £10,000 before; savings interest or dividends over £10,000; £2,500 or more of other untaxed income; income from abroad, or UK income while not resident; trust or estate income; pension savings above the annual allowance or unauthorised payments; positions such as a minister of religion or a Lloyd’s underwriter; expenses over £2,500; and some investment reliefs (GOV.UK checker). Capital Gains Tax is usually due on gains from shares, crypto, property that is not your main home, business assets and most personal possessions worth £6,000 or more apart from your car (GOV.UK).
The High Income Child Benefit Charge falls on the partner with the higher adjusted net income once it is over £60,000, when either of you gets Child Benefit, or when someone else gets it for a child living with you and they contribute at least an equal amount towards the child’s upkeep (GOV.UK). The checker asks whose income is higher, so it can say whether the charge is yours.
When no return is needed
Pay and pensions are taxed through PAYE, and a State Pension above your Personal Allowance is collected by HMRC writing to you. Some untaxed income needs only a call or a message in your HMRC online account: property income over £1,000 up to £2,500 after expenses, dividends over £500 up to £10,000, and other taxable income under £2,500. Savings interest up to £10,000 is reported by your bank; if you owe tax on it and hear nothing by 31 March after the tax year, contact HMRC (GOV.UK). Income of £1,000 or less from self-employment or property is covered by the trading and property allowances (GOV.UK).
Deadlines
For the tax year that ended on 5 April: tell HMRC by 5 October if you need a return and have not sent one before (or did not need one for the year before); a paper return must reach HMRC by 31 October; an online return by 30 December if you want the tax collected through your tax code (when you owe less than £3,000 and already pay tax through PAYE: GOV.UK), otherwise by 31 January; and the tax by 31 January, with a second payment on account by 31 July if you make them (GOV.UK). Register after 5 October and HMRC gives you 3 months from its letter to file, but the tax is still due by 31 January. A late return costs £100 at once, then £10 a day after 3 months up to £900, then more after 6 and 12 months; late tax costs interest and penalties of 5% at 30 days, 6 months and 12 months (GOV.UK).
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Sole traders and landlords whose self-employed and property income together, before expenses, was over £50,000 in Tax Year 2024-25 use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from Tax Year 2026-27; over £30,000 in 2025-26 brings it in from 2027-28, and over £20,000 in 2026-27 from 2028-29. It means digital records and quarterly updates from compatible software, and a return through that software (GOV.UK).
Limitations
- A guide built on HMRC’s published checker and rules for individuals; trustees, partnerships’ own returns, estates of people who have died and companies have their own returns.
- Some cases need HMRC’s own answer: complex foreign income, residence questions and special arrangements. If HMRC has asked you for a return, you must send it or ask HMRC to withdraw the notice.
- Not tax advice: HMRC decides whether you must send a return.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Do I Need a UK Tax Return? Checker shows whether you must send a return in full, with the first rows of your deadlines and the first of several reasons; the other reasons and deadlines are hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Do I need a tax return if I earn under £1,000 on the side?
Not for self-employed income of £1,000 or less before expenses: the trading allowance covers it. Over £1,000 you register and send a return, even if your expenses mean no profit.
Do I need a tax return for rental income?
Yes if your property income is more than £2,500 after expenses or more than £10,000 before expenses. Between £1,000 and £2,500 after expenses you can tell HMRC instead, and up to £1,000 before expenses is covered by the property allowance.
When is the deadline to register for Self Assessment?
5 October after the end of the tax year you need a return for (the tax year ends on 5 April). If you register later, HMRC gives you 3 months from its letter to send the return, but the tax is still due by 31 January.
I am a company director. Do I need a tax return?
Not just for being a director: directors are not on GOV.UK’s list of who must send a return. You need one if another reason applies, for example dividends over £10,000 or untaxed income, and your company files its own Company Tax Return.
Do I need a tax return for the High Income Child Benefit Charge?
If the charge is yours, yes, unless you pay it through PAYE: the partner with the higher adjusted net income over £60,000 pays it. Employees can ask HMRC to collect it through their tax code instead of a return; otherwise it is paid through Self Assessment.
Are my answers sent anywhere?
