Titles and descriptions

Copy columns from a spreadsheet (they paste as tab-separated) or paste a crawler export. A header row with names such as URL, Address, Title 1, Meta Description 1 or Focus keyword is recognised; without one, the columns are guessed and you can change them below.
Rows with their own keyword column keep it.

Widths used for the estimate

The defaults are the widths commonly used by SEO tools and by MySmartCoPilot's other SEO tools. Change them if you have measured different cut-off points.

About the Title & Meta Description Length Checker

Paste rows from a spreadsheet or upload a CSV or Excel file — for example a crawler export with the URL, title and meta description of every page — and the checker measures each title and description in pixels, the way result pages run out of room, against desktop and mobile cut-off points. It flags missing and duplicate titles and descriptions, very short or repetitive text, titles in capitals, and whether each page's focus keyword appears.

Filter the table to the rows that need work and download the results as CSV for a spreadsheet or a ticket. Up to 500 rows are checked at a time, entirely in your browser: the tool reads the text you give it and never fetches or uploads your pages.

How to use it

  1. Upload a CSV, TSV, TXT or Excel file, or paste rows copied from a spreadsheet. A header row such as URL, Title, Meta description, Focus keyword (or a crawler's Address, Title 1, Meta Description 1) is recognised automatically.
  2. Check the Columns pickers and correct them if a column was guessed wrongly.
  3. Optionally type a focus keyword for rows that have no keyword column.
  4. Read the summary, then use Show to list only rows with issues, duplicates, missing tags, text that is too long or too short, or a missing keyword.
  5. Click Download CSV for every row with its measurements and issues, or Download shown rows for the filtered list.

Examples

A description that fits desktop but not phones

Result
Desktop: Fits · Mobile: Too long — "Description cut on mobile (≈736 of 680 px)"
Focus keyword as separate words
Input
Keyword "block print kurta", title "Blue Block Print Cotton Kurta…"
Result

Why pixels, and which limits are used

Google sets no fixed length for titles or meta descriptions: both are "truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width" (Influencing title links, Control your snippets). A character count is a poor guide because letters differ in width — "W" is more than four times as wide as "i".

Each title is measured at 20 px and each description at 14 px with Arial character widths, against these default cut-off points: titles ≈ 600 px (desktop and mobile), descriptions ≈ 920 px on desktop and ≈ 680 px on phones. These are the widths commonly used by SEO tools; change them under Widths used for the estimate. "Near limit" means within 20 px of the title limit or 5 % of the description limit.

What each check means

  • Missing: an empty title, or no meta description (Google then builds the snippet from page text).
  • Duplicate: the same title or description on more than one row. Google's guidance is that identical or similar descriptions on every page are not helpful, and repeated boilerplate is a common reason it rewrites titles.
  • Too long / near limit: the text will probably be cut with an ellipsis on that device. A description that fits desktop but is cut on phones is listed but not counted as an issue: at the default widths almost every description long enough for desktop is cut on phones, so put what matters in its first 100 or so characters.
  • Very short title (under 15 characters) and short description (under 70 characters): Google's guide gives "Home" style titles and a two-word description as bad examples.
  • Capitals, repeated words, separators at the start or end: hard to read, keyword stuffing, or a half-empty title such as "| Brand".
  • Focus keyword: found at the start, as a phrase elsewhere, only as separate words, or missing. Case and simple plurals (kurta/kurtas) are ignored.

Fixing what you find

  • Start with missing and duplicate titles on important pages: they affect what searchers see first.
  • For long titles, move the brand to the end and the words people search for to the front; the cut then removes only the brand.
  • Write descriptions for your key pages by hand; for large catalogues, generate them from page data (Google says programmatic descriptions are fine when they are human-readable and varied).
  • Preview a fixed title and snippet in the SERP Snippet Preview, then write the tags with the Meta Tag Generator.

Limitations

  • Checks only the text you paste or upload; it does not crawl or download pages. Export titles and descriptions from your crawler, CMS or Search Console first.
  • Up to 500 rows per check — split larger exports into several files.
  • Pixel widths are estimates with Arial metrics; real results use the search engine's own fonts and may cut a few characters earlier or later.
  • For a spreadsheet file, only the first sheet is read.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum length of a title tag or meta description?

There is no official maximum. Google cuts both to fit the screen, so what matters is pixel width. As a guide, about 600 px of title (roughly 60–65 ordinary characters) and about 920 px of description (roughly 145–150 characters) show on desktop, and about 680 px of description (roughly 105–110 characters) on phones.

Which file formats can I upload?

CSV, TSV and TXT (comma, tab, semicolon or pipe separated; UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252), and Excel or OpenDocument spreadsheets (XLSX, XLS, ODS) — the first sheet is used.

Are my URLs or titles sent anywhere?

No. The file is read and checked in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.

Why is a row marked as a duplicate when the capitalisation differs?

Because search results would show the same words. Titles and descriptions are compared ignoring case, repeated spaces and HTML entities, so "Tom & Jerry" and "tom & jerry" count as the same.

Can I check more than 500 rows?

Not in one go. Split the export into files of 500 rows and check each one; duplicates are then found within each file only.
