About the Sweden ROT & RUT Tax Deduction Calculator

Work out the ROT deduction (rotavdrag) for repairs, conversions and extensions of your home, or the RUT deduction (rutavdrag) for cleaning, gardening and other household services. The company takes the deduction straight off the invoice — at most 30 % (ROT) or 50 % (RUT) of the labour cost including VAT — and Skatteverket pays it to the company. Materials, travel and equipment give no deduction.

Each person has a yearly room: ROT at most 50 000 kr, and ROT and RUT together at most 75 000 kr. Enter what you have already used this year and how you share the invoice with a co-owner, and the calculator shows each person’s part, what you pay the company and the room you have left. Nothing you type leaves your browser. Without a pass the page shows a free preview of your own result: the deduction, the caps and checks, and the first rows of each table, while every other figure stays hidden until you unlock it with a Pro pass.

    How to use it

    1. Choose ROT (repairs, conversion, extension) or RUT (household services).
    2. Enter the labour cost including VAT, and the materials, travel and other costs on the same invoice.
    3. For each person who shares the deduction, enter their share and the ROT and RUT they have already used this year.
    4. Read the deduction on the invoice, what you pay the company, each person’s part and their room left.
    5. With a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result, copy the summary or download it as a CSV file; without one the page shows a free preview.

    Examples

A kitchen: 80 000 kr of labour and 35 000 kr of materials, one owner
    Result
ROT deduction 24 000 kr; you pay 91 000 kr of the 115 000 kr invoice.
A bigger job: 200 000 kr of labour
    Result
One owner: 50 000 kr (the ROT cap). Two owners sharing equally: 60 000 kr, 30 000 kr each.

Each person has their own yearly cap, so sharing the deduction with a co-owner can use the full 30 %.

Cleaning: 2 400 kr of labour
    Result
RUT deduction 1 200 kr; you pay 1 200 kr.
RUT after using the whole ROT cap of 50 000 kr
    Result
Room left for RUT: 25 000 kr, so a 100 000 kr labour cost gives 25 000 kr instead of 50 000 kr.

    How much the deduction is

The company may take off at most 30 % of the labour cost including VAT for ROT work and 50 % for RUT work, and you pay at least the rest (ROT; RUT). Costs for materials, travel, equipment or administration give no deduction. ROT is at most 50 000 kr a person and year, and ROT and RUT together at most 75 000 kr. The year that counts is the year you pay the invoice, not the date on it.

Sharing with a co-owner or someone you live with

Two or more people who own and use the home (ROT), or who use it together (RUT), can split the deduction, and each uses their own yearly room; together the deduction can never be more than 30 % or 50 % of the labour cost. The invoice should say how much each person’s deduction is, and each person must be named on it or pay it.

    Who can get it

You must be 18 by the end of the year, live in Sweden and pay tax here (or have at least 90 % of your earned income in Sweden), and pay enough tax in the year to use the deduction. For ROT you must own the home while the work is done, and you or your parents must use it as a home or holiday home, in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. RUT work must be done in or near a home you live in or use as a holiday home; your parents’ home counts if you pay, your child’s does not.

    Limitations

    • Whether you pay enough tax to use the deduction depends on your whole year’s tax: the calculator does not check it.
    • Which jobs count as ROT or RUT work is decided by Skatteverket’s lists; the calculator takes the labour cost you enter.
    • Green technology (grön teknik) and other tax reductions are not included.
    • An estimate from Skatteverket’s published rules, not tax advice.

    Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Sweden ROT & RUT Tax Deduction Calculator shows your rot or rut deduction in full, with the caps and checks that apply and the first rows of each table (up to 3); every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment unless you choose automatic renewal, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How much is the ROT deduction?

30 % of the labour cost including VAT, at most 50 000 kr a person and year. On 80 000 kr of labour that is 24 000 kr.

How much is the RUT deduction?

50 % of the labour cost including VAT. Together with ROT it is at most 75 000 kr a person and year, so after a full ROT year there is 25 000 kr left for RUT.

    Do materials and travel count?

No. Only the labour cost gives a deduction; materials, travel, equipment and administration are paid in full.

Can two people share the deduction?

Yes, if you both own and use the home (ROT) or use it together (RUT). Each of you uses your own yearly room, which lets a large job use the full 30 % or 50 %.

Do I have to apply for it?

No. The company takes the deduction off the invoice and applies to Skatteverket for the payment. You can see how much of your yearly room you have used in Skatteverket’s e-service.

Is what I enter sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser; nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server.
