About the Ringtone Maker (iPhone M4R & Android)

Turn any song, voice memo or video sound into a ringtone. The page draws the song’s waveform and starts with its loudest stretch selected — often the chorus — so you can play it at once, then drag the selection, type a start time or nudge it by tenths of a second until it starts exactly where you want.

Add a fade in and fade out, optionally make it as loud as it can be (its loudest peak at −1 dBTP), and, with a pass, download an iPhone ringtone (.m4r, AAC), an M4A for GarageBand on the iPhone itself, or an MP3 for Android. iPhone ringtones are kept to 30 seconds, the most GarageBand exports, and step-by-step instructions for putting the ringtone on your phone appear with the download.

The song is decoded, cut and encoded in your browser and never uploaded. Without a pass, the ringtone is a free preview: the parts around its start and its end (never more than half of it) with a short MySmartCoPilot chime, and Play selection plays with the chime too.

How to use it

  1. Drop a song (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG) or a video on the box, or press Choose a song.
  2. Press Play selection to hear the part the page picked. Drag it on the waveform, drag its edges, type a Start time, or use the −1 s / +1 s buttons.
  3. Choose iPhone ringtone (.m4r), M4A for GarageBand or Android (.mp3), set the fades and a name.
  4. Press Make ringtone, listen, press Download, with a pass or after unlocking this result, and follow the steps shown for your phone. Without a pass the page plays a free preview instead: the parts around the start and the end of the ringtone (never more than half of it) with a short MySmartCoPilot chime.

Why iPhone ringtones stop at 30 seconds

Apple’s GarageBand for iPhone guide says that the maximum length for exported ringtones is 30 seconds, and GarageBand shortens longer ones. Ringtones made here for the iPhone therefore stay at 30 seconds or less, so they work whichever way you add them. Android ringtones made here can be up to a minute long.

Which file to make

  • iPhone ringtone (.m4r): AAC audio in an MPEG-4 file with the .m4r extension and the iTunes audio brand, as iTunes and GarageBand write them. Add it with a computer (Finder on a Mac, iTunes on Windows).
  • M4A for GarageBand: the same AAC audio as an .m4a file, which GarageBand for iPhone imports from the Files app (it reads AIFF, WAV, AAC and MP3 files, Apple’s guide says). GarageBand then exports it as a ringtone — no computer needed.
  • Android (.mp3): an MP3 at 192 kbps. Files in the phone’s Ringtones folder appear in its list of ringtones (Android’s DIRECTORY_RINGTONES).

Getting a good ringtone

  • Start on a strong beat or the first word of the line, so the ringtone does not begin halfway through a sound. Zoom with the nudge buttons: ±0.1 s moves it by a tenth of a second.
  • A short fade in (0.3–1 s) avoids a click at the start; a fade out of 2–3 s ends it gently when the call goes on ringing.
  • Make it as loud as it can be raises a quiet recording (or lowers one that peaks too high) so that its loudest true peak sits at −1 dBTP, which leaves the encoder 1 dB of headroom below full scale.
  • Loop while you choose: the selection repeats as it will when the phone rings.

Limitations

  • Songs with copy protection (DRM), such as downloads from music-streaming apps, cannot be opened: use files you own without protection.
  • A website cannot install a ringtone on your phone: after downloading, add it as the steps describe (Finder or iTunes, GarageBand, or the Android sound settings).
  • iPhone ringtones are at most 30 seconds and Android ringtones made here at most 60 seconds.
  • Very long files (over an hour) take a while to draw and need more memory, especially on phones.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. The audio engine and the AAC or MP3 encoder download from MySmartCoPilot the first time you use them. Your songs are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Ringtone Maker (iPhone M4R & Android) shows the parts around the start and the end of your ringtone (never more than half of it) in the format you chose, with a short MySmartCoPilot chime. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How do I make a ringtone for my iPhone without a computer?

Choose M4A for GarageBand, make the ringtone on the iPhone and download it (with a pass, or after unlocking it), then import it into GarageBand (Loop Browser → Files → Browse items from the Files app), and share the song as a Ringtone. GarageBand then offers to use it as your standard ringtone right away.

How do I add the .m4r file to my iPhone with a computer?

Connect the iPhone, select it in a Finder window (Mac) or open it in iTunes (Windows), and drag the .m4r file onto it. It then appears in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

How do I set the MP3 as my ringtone on Android?

Download it on the phone, with a pass or after unlocking it (or copy it to the Ringtones folder), then open Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone and choose it — or use the option to add your own sound if it is not listed. The menu names differ between phone makers.

Why can my iPhone ringtone only be 30 seconds long?

Because GarageBand, Apple’s own way to make ringtones on the iPhone, exports at most 30 seconds. Keeping to that limit means the ringtone works whichever way you add it.

Can I make a text tone or a ringtone for one contact?

Yes. In GarageBand’s export, choose Standard Text Tone or Assign to contact; with an .m4r added from a computer, open Contacts, tap the person, tap Edit and choose the ringtone. On Android, MP3 files in the Notifications folder appear as notification sounds.

Is the song uploaded?

No. Decoding, cutting and encoding happen in your browser; only the page’s code is downloaded.
