About the Screen Recorder

Record your entire screen, one window or one browser tab with your microphone and the tab or system sound (where your browser and system allow it), plus an optional round webcam bubble in a corner. A countdown gives you time to get ready, and you can pause and resume as often as you like.

Recordings are encoded on your device as MP4 (H.264 + AAC) or WebM (VP9 + Opus) with a steady frame rate, even when the screen does not change. In Chrome and Edge, long sessions can be saved straight to a file as you record, so they do not fill the computer’s memory. Nothing is uploaded: the video never leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to record, the sound sources, the webcam bubble (optional), the file format and quality. The page estimates how big a minute of recording will be.
  2. Press Start recording. In the browser’s dialog pick the screen, window or tab; tick Share tab audio (or system audio) there if you want its sound. Allow the microphone and camera if asked.
  3. After the countdown the recording runs; the tab title shows a red ● and the time. Use Pause, Resume and Stop, or the browser’s Stop sharing button.
  4. Watch the result on the page and press Download (or find it in the file you chose).

Which sound can be recorded?

This depends on the browser and system, as defined by the W3C Screen Capture standard and the browsers’ implementations:

  • Chrome and Edge: a tab’s sound everywhere (tick Share tab audio in the dialog). When you share an entire screen on Windows or ChromeOS, the whole system’s sound can be shared too. On macOS and Linux, system sound depends on the browser version; the dialog only offers what works.
  • Firefox and Safari: the screen is shared without its sound.
  • Microphone: works in every browser. It is recorded with echo cancellation so the sound from your speakers is not recorded twice.

Tab sound and the microphone are mixed into one stereo track.

Quality, size and long recordings

The page encodes with your browser’s video encoder (WebCodecs), usually in hardware. Up to 1080p at 30 fps suits tutorials and is readable on any screen; 60 fps makes fast motion and scrolling smoother but makes files larger. Screens that change little (slides, documents) produce much smaller files than video or games.

Without Save straight to a file, the recording is kept in memory until you download it — fine for most recordings, but for an hour or more choose the file option (Chrome and Edge on a computer), which writes the video to disk as it is recorded. If a shared window changes size while recording, the picture is fitted into the original frame with black bars rather than stopping.

Privacy and protected content

Recording happens entirely in your browser. The screen, microphone and camera are only used after you choose them in the browser’s own dialogs, and the browser shows that it is sharing. Video protected by DRM (for example on streaming services) records as a black area: browsers block it, and this tool does not try to get around it. Only record what you have the right to record, and tell people when you record a call.

Limitations

  • Desktop browsers only: Android and iOS browsers cannot capture the screen. Use the phone’s built-in screen recorder instead.
  • Firefox and Safari cannot record tab or system sound; the microphone works everywhere.
  • The webcam bubble needs WebCodecs (current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari); saving straight to a file also needs Chrome or Edge on a computer. Older browsers record with MediaRecorder, without either.
  • There is no editing here; use the Video Trimmer to cut the start and end, or the Video Compressor to make the file smaller.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. The recording engine downloads from MySmartCoPilot when you start your first recording. Your recordings are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded?

No. It is recorded and encoded in your browser and saved on your device. MySmartCoPilot only sends the page and its code to your browser.

How do I record the sound of a video or call in another tab?

Choose A browser tab, press Start, pick the tab in the dialog and tick Share tab audio before pressing Share. This works in Chrome and Edge.

Why is there no sound from my screen?

The “Share audio” switch in the sharing dialog was off, you shared a window (windows have no separate sound), or the browser does not support it (Firefox and Safari). The page tells you when no screen sound was shared. The microphone is separate and still works.

Can I record for a long time?

Yes. For long sessions tick Save straight to a file (Chrome and Edge), so the video is written to disk as you record. Keep the computer from sleeping; the page also asks the browser to keep the screen on.

Why does a streaming video show up black?

Services protect their videos with DRM, and browsers block screen capture of protected video. This is intended and cannot be changed by a website.

Can I record on my phone?

Not in a browser: Android and iOS do not let web pages capture the screen. Use the built-in recorder: on Android, Quick Settings → Screen record; on iPhone and iPad, Control Center → Screen Recording.
