What the codes contain

Choose a picture or start the camera. Links never open by themselves: you see where a code leads first.

Pictures and camera frames are decoded on this device and never uploaded. The first scan in browsers without a built-in barcode reader downloads the decoder (zxing-wasm, about 0.9 MB) from this site once.

About the QR Code & Barcode Scanner

Read QR codes and barcodes from a photo, a screenshot (paste it with Ctrl+V or ⌘V) or the live camera. The scanner finds several codes in one picture — QR, Micro QR, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417, MaxiCode, EAN/UPC, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar and GS1 DataBar — and shows what each one contains in plain words.

Links are never opened by themselves: you see the real website first, with warnings about short links, look-alike addresses, unencrypted pages and app downloads. UPI payment codes show the UPI ID, name and amount with a reminder that a QR code is only ever needed to pay, never to receive. Wi-Fi codes show the network and password, contact cards can be saved, and GS1 codes on medicine packs show the GTIN, batch and expiry date. Everything is decoded on your device.

    How to use it

    1. Choose Photo or screenshot and pick a picture, drop it on the box or paste a screenshot — or choose Camera and select Start camera.
    2. Wait a moment: every code found is outlined and numbered on the picture, and listed with its contents.
    3. Read the warnings before you act. Copy the text, open a link (only when you choose to), copy a Wi-Fi password, save a contact or add an event to your calendar.
    4. Several codes? Use Copy all or Download CSV. Stop the camera when you are done.

    Common uses

    • Checking a UPI QR code before paying a seller you do not know.
    • Seeing where a QR code on a poster, parcel or letter leads before opening it.
    • Reading a Wi-Fi QR code on a laptop that has no camera app for it.
    • Reading a QR code from a screenshot someone sent you.
    • Checking expiry dates and batch numbers in GS1 codes on medicine packs.

QR code payment scams — what to know

    • You never scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A caller or buyer who sends a code “to receive your payment” or a refund is trying to take money from you.
    • A UPI code can fill in any name, but the money goes to the UPI ID in it. Your UPI app shows the account’s registered name before you pay — if it is not the shop or person you expect, stop.
    • A code with an amount already filled in should match exactly what you agreed to pay. AutoPay mandate codes allow repeated debits; approve them only for subscriptions you set up yourself.
    • Do not install apps (.apk files) from QR codes or links; they are a common way to steal OTPs.

To pay, scan the code with your own UPI app, which shows the payee’s verified name. This scanner helps you look before you pay; it cannot check whether a UPI ID is genuine.

Checking a link before opening it

The scanner names the website a link really belongs to — the end of the address, so sbi.co.in.secure-login.example.com is shown as a link to example.com, with a warning that a well-known name was put in front of it. It also warns when the address hides its destination (a link shortener such as bit.ly), uses look-alike letters from other alphabets (“xn--” addresses), goes to a bare IP address, hides the real site behind an “@”, is not encrypted (http), sits on a free website service where anyone can make a page (such as pages.dev or sites.google.com), or downloads an app or program file. Links of the kind “javascript:” or “intent:” are shown as text and cannot be opened from here. These checks catch common tricks but cannot prove a site is safe — when in doubt, type the address of the company you know instead.

    What it can read

    • 2D codes: QR Code, Micro QR, rMQR, Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417 and MaxiCode.
    • Barcodes: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF (including ITF-14), Codabar and GS1 DataBar.
    • Contents: web links, UPI payments, Wi-Fi networks, contact cards (vCard and MECARD), email, phone and text-message codes, map locations (geo), calendar events, GS1 data (GTIN, batch, expiry, serial, weight…), product numbers with ISBN and GS1 India notes, and plain text.

Where the browser has a built-in barcode reader (for example Chrome on Android and macOS) it is used first; otherwise, or if it finds nothing, the open-source zxing-wasm decoder runs on your device.

When a code will not scan

    • Take the photo closer, with the whole code in the frame and a little blank space around it.
    • Use even light: no glare across the code and no deep shadow. On a phone, the torch button helps in the dark.
    • Hold the camera still and straight; very curved or crumpled labels may not read.
    • For a code on a screen, a screenshot works better than a photo of the screen.
    • Choose Search again more thoroughly for small or damaged codes in big photos.

    Limitations

    • Link and payment warnings are checks for common tricks, not a guarantee that a code is safe or genuine.
    • The scanner cannot see a UPI ID’s registered name — only your UPI app shows it.
    • Badly damaged, very small, blurred or heavily curved codes may not be found; try a closer, sharper picture.
    • Camera scanning needs permission to use the camera on this site; it stops when you leave the page.

    Privacy

Pictures, screenshots and camera frames are decoded in your browser and never uploaded or stored. Links are not opened unless you choose to open them.

    Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to scan a QR code with this?

Scanning only reads the code — nothing is opened, paid or installed. You see what the code contains and where a link goes, with warnings, and then decide yourself. The picture never leaves your device.

How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot or a photo in my gallery?

Choose Photo or screenshot and pick the image, or copy the screenshot and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) on this page. Several codes in one image are all found.

Can this tell me if a UPI QR code is fake?

It shows the UPI ID, name and amount stored in the code and warns about common scam patterns, but only your UPI app can show the account’s registered name. If that name is not who you expect, or someone asks you to scan a code to receive money, do not pay.

Why doesn’t it open links automatically?

Because a QR code can point anywhere — including fake login pages and app downloads. You see the real address and any warnings first, and open the link with the button only if you trust it.

Which barcode types can it read?

QR Code (and Micro QR, rMQR), Data Matrix, Aztec, PDF417, MaxiCode, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar and GS1 DataBar.

    Does it work without internet?

Once the page has loaded, browsers with a built-in barcode reader scan without a connection. Other browsers download the decoder (about 0.9 MB) the first time; the site’s offline support then keeps a copy with the page’s other files.
