About the PPM to mg/m³ Gas Concentration Converter
Convert ideal-gas volume concentrations in ppm or ppb to mass per cubic metre and back. Choose a rounded molecular-weight reference or enter your own value, then specify the gas temperature and absolute pressure. The default uses an editable traditional reference molar volume; a separate option calculates the molar volume from the defined SI gas constant.
The free preview masks calculated figures and marks available charts. A Pro pass opens complete results, copy and text or PDF reports. All sequence and numeric processing stays on your device.
How to use it
- Enter a concentration and choose ppm by volume, ppb by volume, mg/m³ or µg/m³.
- Select a molecular-weight reference or enter a verified value for another gas.
- Enter temperature and absolute pressure; a gauge pressure must first be converted to absolute pressure.
- Choose the editable reference-volume or SI ideal-gas model and calculate the preview; a pass opens all four units and the full report.
Examples
1 ppm CO2, custom entered MW = 44.01 g/mol, entered reference volume 24.45 L/mol
1.8 mg/m³ and 1800 µg/m³
25°C, 101.325 kPa, SI ideal-gas model
Molar volume about 24.4654 L/mol
Equations and conventions
mg/m³ = ppm_v × MW / V_m, with MW in g/mol and V_m in L/mol. The SI model gives V_m = RT/P; litres and kPa cancel their factors of 1000. The editable-reference model scales V_ref by (T/298.15)(101.325/P_kPa). One ppb = 0.001 ppm and one mg/m³ = 1000 µg/m³.
Sources
Gas behavior follows OpenStax: the ideal gas law. Constants use NIST: molar gas constant. Rounded average molecular weights are sourced from PubChem. The traditional convention is described by the NIOSH Pocket Guide introduction.
Limitations
- ppm and ppb mean gas volume or ideal-gas mole fraction, not liquid-solution mass fraction.
- The entered 24.45 L/mol reference is rounded; the SI-calculated value is slightly different.
- Ideal, uniform gas conditions are assumed; humidity, real-gas effects and aerosol mass need other information.
- This is a conversion estimate, not an exposure, emergency, workplace-compliance or professional instrument-calibration assessment.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, PPM to mg/m³ Gas Concentration Converter shows the rules, dates and checks that apply to your figures, with every computed amount hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Why do temperature and pressure matter?
A fixed number of gas molecules occupies a different volume as temperature or absolute pressure changes, so the same volume fraction corresponds to a different mass per cubic metre.
Why is the SI volume different from 24.45?
The traditional reference is rounded. The defined-SI calculation near 25°C and one atmosphere gives about 24.4654 L/mol; both conventions are explicitly selectable.
Can I use an unlisted compound?
Yes. Choose a custom molecular weight and supply a verified average molar mass for the gas. The model cannot determine a molecular weight from an unknown mixture.
