Take each photo with the camera level at hip height, 2 to 3 metres away and square to the client — straight from the front, or exactly from the side — with the whole body in the frame, in fitted clothes, against a plain wall. Give photos to compare the same label (for example “Standing” or “Squat”).

About the Posture & Joint-Angle Photo Report

A photo measurement tool for physiotherapists, chiropractors and trainers. Take or choose front and side photos of a client; MediaPipe Pose Landmarker places the body points on your device, you drag any point onto the joint, and the tool measures the angles you tick — knee and hip flexion, shoulder abduction and flexion, elbow flexion, trunk lean, the head forward of the shoulder, shoulder and hip level, the knee angle from the front and the shin tilt — over a plumb line and a grid.

Photos of both sides are compared left against right, and a second set of photos before against after. The report prints on your clinic letterhead with the photos (faces blurred if you like, and only with the client’s agreement) or the lines alone, as a PDF or as phone pictures. It is a measurement aid, not a diagnostic device: it names no condition and gives no normal ranges. Photos never leave your device.

      How to use it

      1. Fill in Your letterhead once (clinic, your name, registration and logo; it is kept on this device), then the client’s name.
      2. Press Add a photo and take or choose a photo from the front or exactly from the side, the whole body in view.
      3. Press Find the points — the pose model runs on your device — or Place by hand and tap each joint in turn. Check the view (front, left side or right side).
      4. Drag any point that is off the joint; a magnifier shows under your finger. With a keyboard, choose the point and move it with the arrow keys.
      5. Tick the angles to measure on each photo. Give photos to compare the same label, and tick Compare two sets of photos to add the after photos.
      6. Choose photos with the lines or the lines only, tick the client’s agreement and, with a Premium pass or after unlocking this report, press Download PDF, Phone pictures, Copy as text or CSV; the free preview shows the report as marked page images.

      Examples

Head forward of the shoulder (side photo)
      Input
Shoulder point at (318, 250), ear point at (282, 160), client facing the left of the photo
      Result
      22° forward

The shoulder-to-ear line is 36 px across for 90 px up: atan(36 ÷ 90) = 21.8° from the vertical, ahead of the shoulder.

      Shoulder level (front photo)
      Input
Left shoulder at (397, 255), right shoulder at (207, 262)
      Result
      2°, right side lower

atan(7 ÷ 190) = 2.1° from the horizontal; the right shoulder is 7 px lower in the photo.

      Knee flexion (side photo)
      Input
Hip, knee and ankle points making a 120° angle at the knee
      Result
      Knee flexion 60°

Flexion is 180° minus the hip–knee–ankle angle, so a straight knee reads 0°.

      Common uses

      • Physiotherapists recording posture and range of motion at a first visit and after a block of treatment.
      • Chiropractors and osteopaths showing a client their standing posture against a plumb line.
      • Strength coaches checking squat depth, trunk lean and shin tilt from a side photo.
      • Clinics sending a branded summary to a client or their doctor, with the photos or the lines only.

      How the angles are measured

      • Flexion (knee, hip, elbow): 180° minus the angle at the joint between the two body segments, so a straight joint reads 0°. Hip flexion uses the shoulder–hip–knee points (the trunk against the thigh).
      • Shoulder abduction (front photo) and shoulder flexion (side photo): the angle at the shoulder between the line down to the hip and the upper arm, 0° with the arm by the side.
      • Trunk lean, head forward of the shoulder and shin tilt (side photo): the tilt of the hip-to-shoulder, shoulder-to-ear or ankle-to-knee line from the vertical, forward or backward of the direction the client faces. The head angle uses the shoulder point, not C7, so it is not the craniovertebral angle.
      • Shoulder level and hip level (front photo): the tilt of the line between the two points from the horizontal, with the lower side.
      • Trunk side lean (front photo): the tilt of the line from mid-hips to mid-shoulders from the vertical.
      • Knee angle from the front: 180° minus the hip–knee–ankle angle in a front photo, inward or outward — the frontal plane projection angle of 2D video analysis.

All angles are measured in the plane of the photo, in whole degrees.

Taking photos that can be compared

Put the camera on a stand, level, at about hip height and 2 to 3 metres away, square to the client: straight from the front, or exactly from the side for side photos. Keep the whole body in the frame, in fitted clothes, against a plain wall, and use the same spot, distance and stance for the after photos. A camera that is tilted or not square to the movement changes the angles; joints moving towards or away from the camera are not measured correctly from a flat photo. Use the back camera (selfie cameras may mirror the photo).

      Body points and checking them

MediaPipe Pose Landmarker (Google, Apache-2.0) places 33 body points on the photo in your browser; the tool shows the ones it measures with — nose, ears, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. Its points are estimates of the joint centres, not of bony landmarks: check every point, drag it onto the joint you would palpate, and the report says how many points you moved. Points the model was not sure of are listed so you can check them. If no person is found, place the points by hand.

      Photos, faces and consent

The report prints the photos with the lines only when you tick that the client — or a parent or guardian — agreed in writing; otherwise, or when you choose Lines only, it prints the lines on a plain background. Blur faces in the printed photos blurs the head area found from the face points (or above the shoulders) in copies made for the report; a photo whose head cannot be found is printed as lines only. Photos are shrunk and kept in this browser on your device.

      Limitations

      • A measurement aid, not a diagnostic device: it measures angles in photos and names no condition, gives no normal ranges and makes no recommendation.
      • Angles are in the plane of each photo; rotation, and movement towards or away from the camera, are not measured.
      • The pose model’s points are estimates and can be off, most of all with loose clothes, a cut-off body or a busy background: check and move them.
      • Up to 4 photos per set and 2 sets (before and after) per report.
      • Reports and photos are kept in this browser on this device; download report files to keep copies or move them.

      Privacy

Everything stays in this browser on your device: photos, body points, client names and saved reports (IndexedDB and localStorage). The pose model runs on the device, faces are blurred on the device, and PDFs and pictures are made on the device; nothing is uploaded.

      Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Posture & Joint-Angle Photo Report shows your photos and body points in full on a marked working view, and the report as images marked “MySmartCoPilot preview · not for use”, with the angles hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or shared. A Premium pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

      Is this a goniometer?

It measures angles on photos, as a photo goniometer does, from points you can check and move. It is a measurement aid, not a diagnostic device, and the angles depend on how the photo was taken.

      How accurate are the points?

The pose model places joint centres well on clear, whole-body photos and less well with loose clothes or a cut-off body. Every point can be dragged onto the joint, and the report says how many were moved by hand.

Do the photos leave my device?

No. The photos are read, measured and blurred in your browser, kept in this browser, and the PDF is made on your device.

Can I compare before and after?

Yes. Tick Compare two sets of photos, add the after photos, and give photos of the same pose the same label: the report prints each angle before and after with the change.

Can I print the report without the photos?

Yes. Choose Lines only: the body lines, points and angles are drawn on a plain background. Without the client’s agreement ticked, the report always prints the lines only.

Which angle is the forward head angle?

The tilt of the line from the shoulder point to the ear point from the vertical in a side photo. It uses the shoulder, not the C7 vertebra, so it is not the craniovertebral angle.
