About the Google Ads Preview & RSA Builder
Write a responsive search ad and see it take shape: up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions with live character counts, two display paths, pins, keyword insertion and the final URL. Every field is checked against Google Ads’ published limits — 30 characters a headline, 90 a description, 15 a path, double-width Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters counting as 2 — and its editorial rules on capitals, punctuation, emoji, spacing, repetition and phone numbers. The pins are checked too, so positions 1 and 2 can always be filled.
The preview shows the ad as a mobile and a desktop search ad, one combination at a time, with keyword insertion filled in by a keyword you choose (or its default text, as Google does when the keyword doesn’t fit). When the ad is ready, export it as a file for Google Ads Editor with the campaign and ad group it belongs to.
Without a pass you see a free preview: the mobile and desktop previews and every check of your ad, with the first lines of the Google Ads Editor file. The whole file, and copying or downloading it, unlock with a Pro pass.
How to use it
- Enter the final URL (the landing page) and up to two display paths.
- Write at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions; add more with the buttons. The counter under each field turns red over the limit.
- Pin a headline or description only when it has to show in one position; the checks say what pinning does to the ad.
- Use Next combination and Mobile / Desktop to see different versions of the ad, and a preview keyword to see keyword insertion filled in.
- Enter the campaign and ad group names. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, download the CSV or copy the rows and import them in Google Ads Editor (Account → Import).
Examples
Headline: {KeyWord:Running Shoes} Sale · keyword: trail running shoesTrail Running Shoes Sale (24 characters; counted as “Running Shoes Sale”, 18)
Google Ads counts the default text against the limit and shows it whenever the keyword is too long to fit.
Fresh FLOWERS Delivered!!
Error · repeated punctuation (!!) · Warning · FLOWERS in capitals
Google Ads’ editorial policy disapproves punctuation repeated like “flowers!!” and capitals used for emphasis; common abbreviations such as ASAP and coupon codes may be allowed, and brand names after a review.
Every headline pinned to position 3
Error · No headline can show in position 1 · No headline can show in position 2
Headline positions 1 and 2 always show, so each needs a pinned headline or unpinned ones to choose from.
Google Ads’ rules this builder applies
- From About responsive search ads: 3–15 headlines of up to 30 characters, 2–4 descriptions of up to 90 characters, two paths of up to 15; each character of a double-width language counts as 2; headlines and descriptions may appear in any order, so each must make sense on its own; headlines pinned to positions 1 and 2 and descriptions pinned to position 1 always show; pinning isn’t recommended for most advertisers and can affect ad strength.
- From Set up keyword insertion: the code is
{keyword:default text}, capitalised as keyword, Keyword, KeyWord, KEYWord or KeyWORD; it works in headlines, descriptions and display paths, not in the final URL; the default text must keep the ad within the limits. - From the editorial policy: capitals and punctuation used correctly (no “FLOWERS” or “flowers!!”), no emoji or half-width katakana (unsupported characters), no gimmicky spacing or repeated asset text, no generic call to action such as “click here”, and no phone numbers in ad text.
- The file uses the column names of Google Ads Editor’s CSV file columns — Campaign, Ad group, Headline 1–15 with Headline 1–15 position, Description 1–4 with their positions, Path 1, Path 2 and Final URL — saved as Unicode text, which Prepare a CSV file recommends.
What the preview can and can’t show
The mock-up follows the shape of a search ad — the Sponsored label, the domain and display path, headlines separated by a bar and the descriptions — in both widths. It is not Google’s renderer: Google decides which assets to combine for each search, may show two headlines instead of three or one description instead of two, and adds assets such as sitelinks. The headline and description orders under the preview count the combinations your pins allow, filling three headline and two description positions where it can.
Limitations
- MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google.
- Ad strength is Google’s own rating; it can’t be calculated outside Google Ads, so this tool doesn’t show one.
- Policy checks cover the editorial rules that can be read from the text; Google also reviews the landing page, trademarks and restricted products.
- Ad customizers other than keyword insertion (location, countdown, customizer attributes) are shown with their default text.
- The file holds one ad. Import it into an existing campaign and ad group in Google Ads Editor, then review it before posting.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Google Ads Preview & RSA Builder shows the mobile and desktop previews and every check of your ad, with the first lines of the Google Ads Editor file (up to 20). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How long can a Google Ads headline be?
30 characters, and a description 90, with each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counting as 2. The counter under every field counts the way Google Ads does, using the default text of a keyword insertion code.
How does keyword insertion work?
Write {KeyWord:Default text} where the keyword should appear. Google Ads replaces the code with the keyword that triggered the ad, capitalised as you wrote “keyword”, and shows the default text when the keyword would make the text too long. Type a keyword in Preview keyword to see the result.
Should I pin headlines?
Only when a headline must always show in one place, such as a required disclaimer. Google says pinning isn’t recommended for most advertisers and can affect ad strength, because fewer combinations can be tried. If you pin, pin two or three headlines to the same position so there is still a choice.
How do I import the file into Google Ads Editor?
In Google Ads Editor choose Account → Import → From file and pick the downloaded CSV (or Paste text with the copied rows), check that the column headers were recognised, select Import, then review the imported changes and keep them. Upload them to Google Ads when you are ready.
Is my ad text sent anywhere?
No. The ad is built and checked in your browser, and the file is made on your device.
