About the Family Emergency Binder (If Something Happens to Me)
A family emergency binder is the folder your family reaches for if you are in hospital or have died: which banks, policies and pensions you have, who the nominees are, where the papers are kept, which subscriptions to cancel, whom to call, and each person’s doctors, allergies and medicines. This one is built on your device and never leaves it.
Add the people in your family with their health details, then each bank account, investment, insurance policy, pension, loan, property, subscription, digital account and important paper — with its nominee or beneficiary and where the papers or access are kept, never the password. The nominee check flags items with no nominee, with a nomination older than five years, or set before a child was born, and quotes the nomination rules for India (bank deposits, demat and mutual funds, EPF, insurance) and the beneficiary rules for the US and the UK from their official sources. Keep it in this browser, encrypted, or save a backup file locked with your passphrase (AES-256). The free preview shows the binder as marked pages and the first rows of the nominee check; a Pro pass unlocks the binder PDF and the check as CSV.
How to use it
- Add the people in your family: name, date of birth, blood group, allergies, conditions, medicines and doctor.
- Add what your family would need to find, section by section — accounts, investments, insurance, pensions, loans, property, subscriptions, digital accounts and papers — with the last 4 digits of each number, the nominee and where the papers are. Never type a password, PIN or full card number: the checks catch them.
- Read the nominee check and fix what it flags with each bank, insurer or fund. Turn on Keep in this browser, encrypted, or save a backup file — both are always yours to use.
- With a Pro pass, download the binder as a PDF and store it with your papers, and the nominee check as CSV; without a pass the binder shows as a marked preview.
Examples
Two bank accounts, a demat account, term life and health insurance, a provident fund, a home loan, a flat, a streaming subscription, e-mail, a will; a daughter born in 2016
A binder with every item and the nominee check: three items without a nominee (a fixed deposit, the health policy, the provident fund) and two nominations made before the daughter was born, with India’s rules for each.
The accounts and policies, the doctors and medicines, the dog’s vet and carer, and whom to call first
A printable binder to leave with a trusted person, and an encrypted backup file to keep in your e-mail.
Common uses
- Leaving your family a clear record of accounts, policies and pensions, with their nominees.
- Checking every nomination after a marriage, a birth or a death in the family.
- Preparing for surgery, a long trip or old age.
- Organising a parent’s papers with them.
What the nominee check looks for
- No nominee recorded on a bank account, investment, policy or pension: without one, your family has to prove they are your legal heirs.
- Set before a family member was born: the nomination is older than a child, so it may not say what you want now.
- Not reviewed for five years or more, or not dated: check it still names the right person, with their current details.
In India, bank deposits follow the Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025, which allow more than one nominee, and the passbook or statement shows “Nomination Registered” with the nominee’s name (RBI). EPF members nominate on Form 2, online or on paper, and update it when a family member is added (EPFO). A life insurance nomination is made or changed by an endorsement the insurer registers and acknowledges (Insurance Act, 1938, s.39). In the US, a payable-on-death bank account names its beneficiaries (FDIC), and retirement plans and IRAs name theirs under each plan’s procedure (IRS).
Passwords stay out
A binder that holds passwords is a risk to everyone who can read it. Write where access is kept instead — a password manager with emergency access, a sealed envelope with your lawyer, a legacy contact set up with the service — and the last 4 digits of account and card numbers. The checks warn when something looks like a password, a PIN, a full card number or a full ID number.
Encrypted on your device
The binder is built in your browser. Keep in this browser, encrypted saves it in this browser’s storage, encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key made from your passphrase (PBKDF2 with 600,000 rounds); it opens only with that passphrase. A backup file is the same encrypted binder as a file, to open on another device. Nobody — including MySmartCoPilot — can open either without the passphrase, or reset it, so write the passphrase down somewhere safe.
Limitations
- An organiser, not legal or financial advice, and not a will: it does not decide who inherits anything.
- It cannot see your accounts: the nominee check works from what you enter, so confirm each nomination with the bank, insurer or fund.
- If you forget the passphrase, the encrypted copy and the backups cannot be opened by anyone.
Privacy
Everything happens in your browser: nothing you enter is uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. The binder is saved only if you turn on Keep in this browser, encrypted or save a backup file, and both are encrypted with your passphrase. Use it on your own device, and lock it before you leave a shared one.
Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Family Emergency Binder (If Something Happens to Me) shows the binder as marked page images, and the nominee check’s counts with its first rows (up to 10). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
What should go in a family emergency binder?
Each person’s health details and doctors; bank accounts, investments, insurance and pensions with their nominees; loans and cards; property papers; subscriptions to cancel; digital accounts and where access is kept; important papers such as the will; pets; and whom to call first.
Should I put passwords in it?
No. Write where access is kept — a password manager’s emergency access, a sealed envelope with your lawyer — and the last 4 digits of numbers. The checks warn when something looks like a password, a PIN or a full card number.
Why does a nominee matter?
A nominee lets the bank, insurer or fund pay out without your family first proving in court that they are your heirs. The check flags items without one, and nominations made before a child was born or not reviewed for five years.
How many nominees can I have on an Indian bank account?
More than one: the Banking Companies (Nomination) Rules, 2025 allow several nominees on a deposit account; ask your bank for its nomination form. The passbook or statement then shows “Nomination Registered” with the nominees’ names.
Is my binder safe?
It never leaves your device. The copy kept in this browser and the backup files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using your passphrase; without the passphrase nobody can open them.
