About the Building Material Weight Calculator

Find the weight of a building material from the unit weights of IS 875 (Part 1), Table 1: concrete, masonry, bricks, blocks, timber, stone, soils, pipes, steel sections, sheets and more, 1,532 entries in 55 groups. Search by name, size or designation (teak, brick masonry, ISMB 300), then give the amount in the entry’s own unit: a volume, an area, a length or a number of pieces, or the sizes that make it. The result is the mass in kilograms and tonnes and the weight in kilonewtons, as the source prints it and as mass × gravity.

The free preview shows the result rows with the values hidden; a Pro pass shows every figure, with copy and text or JSON downloads.

How to use it

  1. Search for the material, or choose its group, and pick the entry with the right size or condition.
  2. Give the amount as a quantity in the entry’s unit (m³, m², metres or pieces), or as its sizes in m, mm, ft or in.
  3. Select Calculate the weight. With a Pro pass you see every figure and can copy the working or download it; without one the free preview hides the values.

Where the unit weights come from

Every entry is a row of IS 875 (Part 1):1987, Table 1, “Unit weight of building materials”, with the page it is printed on. Each keeps the unit the source gives it, such as per cubic metre for concrete, masonry and bulk materials, per square metre for most sheets and boards, per metre for most pipes and steel sections and per piece for manhole covers and frames. Where the source gives a range, the result is a range. Lengths in feet and inches convert exactly (NIST SP 811, B.9).

Formulas

Mass = the source’s kg per unit × the amount; weight = the source’s kN per unit × the amount. The weight from mass is mass × gravity ÷ 1,000, with standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s², unless you change it. The two weights can differ slightly because the source rounds its kg and kN figures separately; both are shown, and neither replaces the other.

Limitations

  • The values are those of IS 875 (Part 1):1987. Check whether a later code or the maker’s figures apply to your material and project.
  • Designations such as pressure classes and steel sections are the source’s, for finding the entry; they are not advice on choosing a product.
  • A few entries have no figures in the source; they stay in the list, and the calculator says so instead of guessing a value.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Building Material Weight Calculator shows the material you chose and the result rows, with every mass, weight and unit weight hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

What is the unit weight of brick masonry in IS 875?

Search for “brick masonry”: common burnt-clay, engineering, glazed and pressed brick masonry each have their own entry per cubic metre. With a Pro pass the result shows the unit weight used beside the weight of your amount.

Why are there two weights in kilonewtons?

The source prints its kilogram and kilonewton figures separately, each rounded. One weight uses its kilonewton figure; the other is your mass × gravity. They may differ in the last digit, and the calculator shows both rather than correcting the source.

Can I enter the sizes of a beam or a wall instead of a volume?

Yes. Choose “Its sizes” and enter the length, width and height in metres, millimetres, feet or inches. For entries per square metre only the length and width count, and for entries per metre only the length.
