Invitation rounds rank expressions of interest by points and occupation, so the scores invited change from round to round. Reaching 65 makes you eligible to be invited; it does not mean you will be.

About the Australia Skilled Visa Points Calculator (189, 190, 491)
Score the General Skilled Migration points test for the Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) visas, item by item from Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations: your age band at invitation, English (competent, proficient or superior, with a helper that reads IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, CELPIP, OET, C1 Advanced, LANGUAGECERT and MET scores), skilled employment outside and inside Australia (20 points at most together), your highest qualification, specialist education, the Australian study requirement, study in regional Australia, a Professional Year, a credentialled community language and partner points, plus nomination (5 points for subclass 190, 15 for subclass 491).
The three subclasses are compared side by side against the 65-point pass mark, and the calculator warns when a birthday will move you into a lower age band — or past 45 — before a likely invitation. Invitation rounds rank expressions of interest and set the real cut-offs, so a score here is never a chance of an invitation. The free preview shows whether each subclass meets the pass mark, the age warnings and the first factors of the table, with your points hidden; a Pro pass unlocks the totals, the points-by-factor table, the CSV and the print.
How to use it
- Enter your date of birth and the date you expect to be invited (today’s date if you are not sure): points are counted at the time of invitation.
- Choose your English level, or open “Work out my level from my test scores” and type your results to set it.
- Choose your years of skilled employment in the 10 years before invitation, outside and inside Australia.
- Choose your highest qualification and tick the other items you can prove, then your partner situation.
- Read the totals for 189, 190 and 491 and the warnings. Without a pass you see whether each subclass meets the pass mark and the first factors of the table, with the points hidden; a Pro pass unlocks them in full with the CSV and the print.
Examples
Age 32 at invitation, proficient English, 5 years of skilled work abroad, 1 year in Australia, a bachelor’s degree, single
189: 80 · 190: 85 · 491: 95 (age 30 + English 10 + employment 15 + qualification 15 + partner 10)
Born 14 March 1994, invitation expected after 14 March 2027
Turning 33 drops age points from 30 to 25: 75 for subclass 189 instead of 80.
8 years abroad (15) and 8 years in Australia (20)
Employment counts as 20 points, not 35.
Common uses
- Checking your points before you lodge an expression of interest in SkillSelect.
- Comparing what a 190 State nomination or a 491 regional nomination adds.
- Planning around a birthday that would cost age points before an invitation.
- Seeing which test score lifts you from proficient to superior English.
The points table
From Schedule 6D and Home Affairs’ points tables (Schedule 6D, Home Affairs: 189 points table):
- Age at invitation: 18–24: 25 · 25–32: 30 · 33–39: 25 · 40–44: 15. You must be under 45 when invited.
- English: competent 0 · proficient 10 · superior 20.
- Skilled employment outside Australia (10 years before invitation): 3 years 5 · 5 years 10 · 8 years 15.
- Skilled employment in Australia: 1 year 5 · 3 years 10 · 5 years 15 · 8 years 20. Employment gives 20 points at most together.
- Highest qualification: doctorate 20 · bachelor or higher 15 · Australian diploma or trade qualification 10 · a qualification recognised by your assessing authority 10.
- Specialist education (an Australian master’s by research or doctorate in a listed STEM or ICT field, at least 2 academic years): 10.
- Australian study requirement 5 · study in regional Australia 5 · Professional Year 5 · credentialled community language 5.
- Partner: single or a partner who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident 10 · a skilled partner 10 · a partner with competent English 5.
- Nomination: subclass 190 5 · subclass 491 15 (a State or Territory nomination, or a family member’s sponsorship).
English test scores
Home Affairs sets minimum scores for each of the four components (Home Affairs: proficient English, superior English). For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025:
- IELTS (Academic or General Training): 6, 7 and 8 in every component for competent, proficient and superior.
- PTE Academic (listening, reading, writing, speaking): competent 47, 48, 51, 54 · proficient 58, 59, 69, 76 · superior 69, 70, 85, 88.
- TOEFL iBT (registered as “Taking TOEFL for Australia”): competent 16, 16, 19, 19 · proficient 22, 22, 26, 24 · superior 26, 27, 30, 28.
Older results (on or before 6 August 2025) use the previous table — for example PTE Academic 65 in every component for proficient and 79 for superior — and the helper applies the table you choose. Tests delivered entirely online are not accepted.
When the points count
Everything is assessed at the time of invitation, and you must later prove each claim. To be invited you need an expression of interest in SkillSelect with at least 65 points, a suitable skills assessment from the 3 years before the invitation and at least competent English, and you must be under 45 when invited (Home Affairs: subclass 189 points-tested stream). Employment counts only in your nominated skilled occupation or a closely related one, at 20 hours a week or more, within the 10 years before the invitation, so the oldest years can drop out while you wait.
Limitations
- Not legal advice: the department assesses your claims and their evidence at invitation and decides the application.
- It does not check occupation lists, skills assessments, State or Territory nomination criteria or the scores invited in recent rounds.
- Employment is entered as bands; the department counts the periods you can prove in your nominated or a closely related occupation.
Privacy
Everything is worked out in your browser; your dates, scores and claims are never uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot.
Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Australia Skilled Visa Points Calculator (189, 190, 491) shows whether subclasses 189, 190 and 491 meet the pass mark, the age warnings and the first factors of the table, with your points and every figure hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
What is the pass mark for subclasses 189, 190 and 491?
65 points. Reaching it lets you be invited, but invitation rounds rank expressions of interest and may invite only higher scores for your occupation.
Can I add overseas and Australian work together?
Yes, up to 20 points in total. For example 8 years abroad (15) and 3 years in Australia (10) count as 20, not 25.
When does my age change my points?
Age is counted on the day you are invited. Points rise from 25 to 30 at 25, fall to 25 at 33 and to 15 at 40, and from 45 you cannot be invited at all. The calculator lists those birthdays in the next 3 years.
Do I get partner points if I am single?
Yes. Being single, or having a partner who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, gives 10 points, the same as a skilled partner. A partner who applies with you and has competent English gives 5.
How many points does nomination add?
A State or Territory nomination for subclass 190 adds 5 points. For subclass 491, a nomination or a family member’s sponsorship accepted by the Minister adds 15.
