About Pixel Courier: Score After Dark

Pixel Courier: Score After Dark is a timing game set in a pixel-art parcel depot after closing time. Two chutes drop parcels onto belts, and the belts run down through three junctions to four bins. Each parcel is one of four colours with a symbol of its own, a circle, a square, a triangle or a diamond, and each belongs in the bin that matches. You cannot touch a parcel. What you own is the deflector arm at each junction: press a switch and the arm flips to send parcels the other way. Nothing is aimed. It is all in the timing, and the arm must be set before the parcel gets there.

The layout is simple enough to learn in a minute and tangled enough to keep you busy for a shift. The left chute can reach the first three bins and the right chute the last three, and both feed the middle junction, so that is where a left parcel and a right parcel can want opposite things within a breath of each other. A switch that has just flipped needs a moment before it flips again, so mashing does not work: look at what is coming, and set the arms in order. The panel beside the board shows the next parcels to drop.

A parcel in the wrong bin is a mix-up, and three mix-ups end the shift. Sort ten in a row to start Overdrive, when the arms sort for you for a few seconds and everything pays double. Gold express parcels run faster and pay triple. A shift is five rounds with faster belts and denser parcels each time, tonight’s shift is the same for everyone, each night adds a rule of its own, and your best run of it is kept as a ghost to chase.

How to play

  1. Flip the left, middle and right switches with A, S and D or the left, down and right arrows, a controller’s d-pad, a tap on the junction, or the three buttons.
  2. Send each parcel to the bin with its colour and symbol: a switch flips the arm to the other output.
  3. The left chute reaches bins one to three and the right chute bins two to four; both feed the middle switch.
  4. A switch needs a moment after a flip, so look ahead and set the arms in order rather than mashing.
  5. A parcel in the wrong bin is a mix-up. Three mix-ups end the shift.
  6. Sort ten in a row to start Overdrive: the arms sort for you and everything pays double. Gold parcels are faster and pay triple.

Controls

  • A, S, D or the left, down, right arrows, the pad’s d-pad, a tap on a junction, the three buttons — flip the switches
  • P, Escape or Start — pause

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which bin a parcel wants?

Each parcel has a colour and a symbol, and every bin wears the same colour and symbol on its front. Match them. The panel beside the board shows the parcels about to drop, so you can plan the switches.

Why will a switch not flip?

A switch that has just flipped needs a short moment before it can flip again. It stops button mashing from working, so set each arm once, in time, rather than flipping it back and forth.

Which chute reaches which bins?

The left chute can reach the first three bins and the right chute the last three. Both feed the middle junction, which sends parcels to the second or third bin.

What is Overdrive?

After ten parcels in a row the arms start sorting for you for a few seconds, and every parcel pays double. The switches are yours again when it ends.

Can I slow it down?

Yes. In Settings, Pace: Relaxed runs at three-quarter speed, and Assist gives wider tap areas on the junctions and a little more time.
