About Amberlight Postcard: Unread Chapters

Amberlight Postcard: Unread Chapters is an illustrated interactive story set on the Lantern Sleeper, a night train that climbs a cloud-forest escarpment toward the town of Quillon and, by an old rule, never turns a wheel on the last steep stretch before the first light touches the signal flag. It arrives at dawn and never earlier. You are grown and going back to Quillon with The Dawn Goose, a picture book your mother made for you on this train when she was the night lamp-keeper. Five of its chapters are blank. Each is kept, half remembered, by one person who heard it read aloud once: the conductor, the cook with a copper kettle that sings for true things, the guard and his counting dog, the fireman who talks in taps of her shovel, and the keeper of the flag. The night has time for four chapters, so one stays unread, and the one you leave decides which of six endings you reach. A first try never quite restores a page. Turn the chapter back to its start and the first try leaves something behind, a pair of empty hands, a pair of glasses, a star-shaped hole in a ticket, and it tells you which way of asking will work now. A page you have restored opens a shortcut in another chapter, so the order you read in matters. You can also go back to any choice, every line is announced to screen readers, the text goes up to Largest, and nothing is timed. A new twist each night and a daily challenge keep it fresh.

How to play

  1. Press Go on or tap the page to continue, and tap a choice (or press 1 to 5) to answer. Z or the Back button returns to your last choice.
  2. Choose a carriage from the contents. Each holds one chapter and one person who half remembers it. You have time for four chapters.
  3. Your first try at a chapter never quite works. Choose Turn back to the start of the chapter: what the first try left behind stays, and it hints which of the three ways of asking fits now.
  4. A page you have restored can open a shortcut in another chapter. Pages go on the board (E, or the Pages button): lay two side by side to find a thread.
  5. The chapter you leave unread decides the ending. Change the text size with T or the Text button. The night saves as you go, and Restart begins a new night with a new twist.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a story?

About fifteen to twenty-five minutes for a night of four chapters. There are six endings, one of them hidden.

Why can I only read four chapters?

The train waits for the first light, and the night has time for four. The chapter you leave unread decides your ending. On some nights the Ladder opens late and all five fit.

How does turning back work?

After a first try you can turn the chapter back to its start. The first try leaves something behind, and the second try only works if it fits that. It is part of the story, and different from the Back button.

What does the order of chapters change?

A page you have restored opens a shortcut in the next chapter along the chain. People also remember which chapters you have already read.

Can I play with a keyboard or a screen reader?

Yes. Every line and choice is announced, every button works with the keyboard or a controller, the text goes up to Largest, and nothing is timed.

Does it save?

Yes, in this browser: the night you are on, the endings you have found and your settings. Nothing is uploaded.
