About Afterglow Signal: Unread Chapters

Afterglow Signal: Unread Chapters is an illustrated interactive story set on Sorrel Gardens, four low blocks of flats round a green, on the last night of a week without power. All week the estate flashed messages to the balcony of Edda Lisk, a retired ship’s radio officer, with torches behind sweet wrappers: amber for come in, green for I am going out, blue for look up. She wrote every one in her log. Friday’s rain turned five nights into blue clouds of ink, and the cold week has taken her voice, so she talks by tapping in the code she taught you. Each lost night belongs to one sender: a bus driver whose bus has stood on the green all week, eleven-year-old twins, a swimming teacher of seventy-nine, a rooftop beekeeper and a night baker with a wood oven. Each remembers their message three ways, and you choose which to write in. No single choice decides the ending. The colours add up night by night, with the threads you find by laying two senders’ sides together, and at dawn the estate decides what kind of week it was. A whole reading of a night opens only once you have restored the night it depends on, so the order matters. There are nine endings. The text goes up to Largest, every line is announced to screen readers, you can go back to any choice, and nothing is timed. A new twist each night and a daily challenge keep it fresh.

How to play

  1. Press Read on or tap the page to continue, and tap a reading (or press 1 to 5) to choose. Z or the Back button returns to your last choice.
  2. Pick a lost night from the log and visit its sender. Write the night in amber, green or blue: each is true, and each adds to its colour.
  3. A fourth, whole reading adds two colours, but it opens only once you have restored the night it depends on. The locked reading says which.
  4. Lay two senders’ sides together on the board (E, or the Senders button) to find a thread: each thread adds a colour too.
  5. Close the log whenever you like, or restore all five nights. The dawn reads the mix. Change the text size with T or the Text button; the night saves as you go.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a story?

About fifteen to twenty-five minutes to restore all five nights.

Which choice decides the ending?

None on its own. Every night you write in adds to amber, green or blue, threads between the senders add more, and the dawn reads the whole mix. Nine endings follow from it.

What are the whole readings?

Each night has a fourth way to write it that adds two colours at once. It opens only after you restore the night it depends on, and its locked choice tells you which night that is.

Does the order of the nights matter?

Yes, a little. The nights talk to each other: what you wrote in one changes what the next sender says, and the whole readings need another night first.

Can I play with a keyboard or a screen reader?

Yes. Every line and choice is announced, every button works with the keyboard or a controller, the text goes up to Largest, and nothing is timed.

Does it save?

Yes, in this browser: the night you are on, the endings you have found and your settings. Nothing is uploaded.
