About the ZIP & RAR Extractor

Open ZIP, RAR, 7z, TAR, GZ, BZ2 and XZ archives right in the browser — no WinRAR, 7-Zip or app to install. You see every file with its size and date, can preview pictures, text, PDFs, audio and video, and download one file, a selection, or everything repacked as one ordinary ZIP that any computer or phone opens. In Chrome and Edge on a computer you can also unpack straight into a folder.

Password-protected archives work too: the password is used only on this page. The archive is read from your device by a background worker and is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop the archive on the box or press it to choose one. For an archive in several parts (name.part1.rar, name.part2.rar … or name.7z.001, name.7z.002 …) choose all the parts together.
  2. If the archive’s file list is encrypted, type the password to see it. If only the files are encrypted, the list shows straight away and the Password box above it unlocks them.
  3. Use the eye button to preview a file and the arrow to download it. Filter the list by name, and tick files to unpack only those.
  4. Press Download all as ZIP (or Download … selected files as ZIP) to get everything in one ZIP, or Extract to a folder… (Chrome and Edge) to write the files into a new folder named after the archive. File list (CSV) saves the list with sizes, dates and methods.

Examples

A RAR in parts
Input
movie.part1.rar, movie.part2.rar and movie.part3.rar, chosen together
Result
One list of files. Files that run across parts are joined and checked against their CRC-32.

Choose only some of the parts and the files that are cut off are marked, instead of producing broken files.

A .tar.gz download on Windows
Input
project-1.2.tar.gz
Result
The gzip layer is unpacked, then the TAR inside is listed with its folders, sizes and dates. **Download all as ZIP** gives a ZIP that Windows Explorer opens.
An encrypted 7z backup
Input
backup.7z whose file names are encrypted
Result
The tool asks for the password before showing anything; a wrong password is reported as wrong, not turned into garbage files.

Formats it opens

  • ZIP, including ZIP64 (over 4 GB or 65,535 files) and files with the .zip.001, .zip.002 … split. Methods: stored, Deflate, Deflate64, BZIP2, LZMA and XZ. Self-extracting .exe archives usually work too.
  • RAR from RAR 1.5 to the RAR 5 format of WinRAR 5, 6 and 7, including solid archives and multi-part sets (.part1.rar … or the older .rar, .r00, .r01 …).
  • 7z with LZMA, LZMA2, PPMd, BZip2, Deflate, Deflate64 or no compression, plus the BCJ, BCJ2, ARM, ARM64, ARM Thumb, PowerPC, SPARC, IA-64 and Delta filters; split .7z.001 sets are joined.
  • TAR in the ustar, pax, GNU and old v7 forms, and compressed TARs: .tar.gz/.tgz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, .tar.lzma and .tar.Z.
  • Single compressed files: gzip (.gz), bzip2 (.bz2), XZ (.xz), LZMA (.lzma) and Unix compress (.Z).

The format is recognised from the file’s first bytes, not its name, so comic-book archives (.cbz, .cbr), .jar, .apk, .epub and Office files (which are ZIPs inside) open as well.

Passwords and encryption

Supported: ZIP’s traditional ZipCrypto and WinZip AES-128/192/256, RAR 3.x/4.x AES-128 and RAR 5 AES-256, and 7-Zip’s AES-256 — for file contents and, in RAR and 7z, for encrypted file lists.

A wrong password is caught with the archive’s own check: RAR 5 and WinZip AES store a password check value; otherwise the unpacked data fails its CRC, and the tool says the password is wrong. It does not guess or remove passwords — you need to know it. Passwords with accents or non-Latin letters can fail if the program that made the archive encoded them differently.

Safe unpacking

  • ZIP, RAR, 7z, gzip, bzip2 and XZ store a checksum for each file (CRC-32; in XZ also CRC-64 or SHA-256), and every file is checked against it as it is unpacked, so damaged data is reported file by file. TAR, .lzma and .Z files have no such checksum.
  • Names are made safe before anything is saved: no .., absolute paths or drive letters (the “zip slip” trick), and characters or names Windows refuses are replaced. Two files that would get the same name are saved as name (2).ext.
  • Extract to a folder… always creates a new folder named after the archive, so nothing already on your disk is overwritten.
  • Symbolic links are listed but not created. Hard links, and the files RAR stores once as “identical files”, are saved as normal copies.
  • In a solid archive (common with RAR and 7z) files are compressed as one stream, so unpacking a file near the end first unpacks the files before it. Unpacking everything at once is the fastest way.

Where the decoders come from

Everything is decoded by code that runs in this page: Deflate in ZIP and 7z by fflate (MIT licence), which also writes the ZIP downloads; LZMA, LZMA2, PPMd and the branch filters after Igor Pavlov’s public-domain LZMA SDK; and RAR by a TypeScript port of the UnRAR source code by Alexander Roshal, used under its licence: “UnRAR source code may be used in any software to handle RAR archives without limitations free of charge, but cannot be used to develop RAR (WinRAR) compatible archiver and to re-create RAR compression algorithm, which is proprietary. Distribution of modified UnRAR source code in separate form or as a part of other software is permitted, provided that full text of this paragraph, starting from “UnRAR source code” words, is included in license, or in documentation if license is not available, and in source code comments of resulting package.” This tool only extracts RAR archives; it cannot create them.

Big archives

The archive is read from your disk in pieces as it is needed — even a multi-gigabyte RAR is never loaded into memory whole — and unpacked files are collected by the browser, which can keep large ones on disk. Single compressed files (.gz, .bz2, .xz, .Z, including .tar.gz) have no table of contents, so they are unpacked in full before the list appears; a progress line shows how far it has got.

One file can be downloaded on its own up to 2 GB. A ZIP made here holds up to about 4 GB of files and 65,000 files; for more, use Extract to a folder…, which writes each file straight to disk.

Limitations

  • Not supported: Zstandard, Brotli and LZ4 compression and the RISC-V filter in 7z; PPMd, Zstandard and the old Shrink/Reduce/Implode methods in ZIP; PKWARE strong encryption; the encryption of RAR 2.x and older; multi-disk ZIPs (.z01, .z02 …); GNU sparse files in TAR; and other formats such as ISO, CAB, DMG, ARJ and LZH. Files that cannot be unpacked are listed with the reason.
  • RAR files that carry a BLAKE2 checksum instead of CRC-32 are unpacked without that check.
  • Single compressed files and the TARs inside them are limited to 2 GB unpacked.
  • Extract to a folder needs the File System Access API: Chrome, Edge or Opera on a computer. Elsewhere use the ZIP download.
  • Archives that need a very large dictionary for very large files (for example 7z or RAR with a dictionary of 1 GB or more) can exceed the memory the browser allows.

Frequently asked questions

Is my archive uploaded anywhere?

No. The archive is opened by code running in your browser and the files are unpacked on your device. Passwords never leave the page either. Once the page has loaded it works offline.

Can it open a RAR file on a Mac, Chromebook or phone?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser, so you do not need WinRAR, The Unarchiver or an app. On a phone, download single files or the whole archive as a ZIP, which phones open natively.

Which parts of a split archive do I need?

All of them, chosen together in one go (the order does not matter). With only some parts the list still appears, but files that continue into a missing part are marked and cannot be unpacked.

Why is unpacking one file slow in some archives?

In a solid archive all files are compressed as one stream, so reaching a file means unpacking the ones before it. The message above the list says when an archive is solid. Unpacking all files in one go avoids the repeated work.

Can it open an archive if I forgot the password?

No. The encryption these formats use (AES in modern ZIP, RAR and 7z) cannot be undone without the password, and this tool does not try to guess it.

Can I make a new archive here?

Repacking as ZIP gives you a normal ZIP of the files you choose. To make an encrypted ZIP from your own files, use the Password-Protected ZIP tool.
