About the UK Driving Theory Test Practice (Car)
Practise for the multiple-choice part of the UK car theory test with questions written from The Highway Code: by topic with the answer explained after every question, as a timed mock test in the format of the real one (50 questions, 57 minutes, 43 right to pass), as a road sign drill with the official sign artwork, or as a review of the questions you last got wrong.
Every explanation names the Highway Code rule it comes from and links to that rule on GOV.UK, so you learn the rule rather than an answer. The questions were written for MySmartCoPilot from the Code itself; they are not the DVSA’s revision questions, which the DVSA licenses separately. For the DVSA’s own practice test and hazard perception clips, use GOV.UK’s practice theory test.
How to use it
- Choose Practise by topic, tick the topics you want (or press My three weakest topics) and choose how many questions to answer.
- Pick an answer (or press 1–4 or A–D) and press Check answer: you see whether it is right, the reason, and the Highway Code rule behind it. Questions you have not seen, and those you got wrong last time, come first.
- When you feel ready, choose Mock test: 50 questions against a 57-minute clock, with a palette to flag questions and move between them. Nothing is marked until you finish.
- Read your result: the score against the pass mark of 43, each topic, and every question with the right answer and its rule. The free preview shows your score and verdict in full, with the first half of the topic breakdown and the question review. Press Practise the ones I got wrong to go straight back over them.
- Use Road signs to drill the signs on their own, and My mistakes to clear the questions you last answered wrong, until the list is empty.
Examples
In good conditions, what is the typical overall stopping distance at 30 mph? You choose 12 metres (40 feet).
Not quite. The right answer is 23 metres (75 feet): 9 metres of thinking distance plus 14 metres of braking distance. Source: Highway Code rule 126.
50 questions answered in 41 minutes, 44 right
44 / 50 · 88% right · pass mark 43 of 50 · time used 41:00 of 57:00 · Pass, with the weakest topics listed first
A practice pass is not a prediction of the real test, where the questions are different.
A red circle with a white horizontal bar across the middle
No entry for vehicular traffic. The wrong answers offered come from other red-ringed signs, such as No right turn and No motor vehicles.
Common uses
- Learning the Highway Code topic by topic before you book the theory test.
- Sitting full timed mocks in the final weeks, and checking which topics still cost you marks.
- Drilling road signs on the bus, a few at a time.
- Clearing the questions you keep getting wrong, until none are left.
- Parents and driving instructors quizzing a learner with explanations to hand.
The real test, as GOV.UK describes it
- Multiple-choice part: 50 questions in 57 minutes; you need 43 right to pass. Before it starts you get a practice question to get used to the screens. You can flag questions to come back to and change any answer before you finish.
- Three of the 50 questions are about a short, silent video clip of a normal driving situation, which you can watch as often as you like. A written mock cannot show a clip, so this mock asks written questions in their place.
- Hazard perception part: 14 video clips, up to 5 points for each developing hazard; the pass mark is 44 of 75. It is not practised here.
- You must pass both parts; if you fail one, you take the whole test again. A pass certificate number lasts for 2 years.

How the questions are written
Each question tests one thing a rule of The Highway Code says: a stopping distance, a speed limit, who gives way, what a road marking or a sign means, what to do after a breakdown. The explanation says why the answer is right, and the source line names the rule and links to its page on GOV.UK, so you can read the rule in full.
The theory test’s questions are based on three books: The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs and The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – the essential skills. The questions here keep to The Highway Code. Know Your Traffic Signs is also on GOV.UK and explains every sign in more depth; the Essential Skills guide is a book you buy. The wrong answers are written to be wrong for a reason you can learn from, not to trick you, and the order of the answers changes each time so you cannot learn positions.
Road signs
The sign drill uses the Department for Transport’s own sign artwork (Crown copyright, reproduced as its traffic sign images guidance allows), and the meanings are the captions The Highway Code gives them. Learn the system as well as the signs: circles give orders (red rings mostly tell you what you must not do, blue circles mostly tell you what you must do), triangles warn, and rectangles inform. Direction signs are blue on motorways, green on primary routes and white on other roads; brown signs point to tourist attractions.
Your progress stays on this device
What you have seen, what you got right, your mistakes list and your mock scores are kept in this browser only. Clearing your browser data, or using another browser, starts you again. Reset my progress deletes them on purpose. An unfinished mock test is kept too, so if you close the page you can carry on with the same questions and the time you had left.
Northern Ireland
This practice follows The Highway Code for England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own Highway Code for Northern Ireland, so learners there should practise from that.
Limitations
- Not the DVSA’s question bank and not the real test: the questions here are written from The Highway Code, and the real test asks different questions. A practice score is not a prediction.
- No video clips: the three video questions of the real test and the hazard perception part are not reproduced. Use GOV.UK’s practice test for those.
- Questions keep to The Highway Code. Material from Know Your Traffic Signs or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving – the essential skills that goes beyond the Code is not covered.
- The written questions work without a connection once the page is loaded; sign images load the first time they are shown, or all at once with Keep the signs for offline use.
Privacy
Everything runs in this browser. The questions and sign images are part of the page; your answers, progress and mock scores are stored only in this browser’s storage and are never uploaded. Reset my progress deletes them.
Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, UK Driving Theory Test Practice (Car) shows your score, verdict and counts in full, with the first half of the topic breakdown, the question review and your progress table. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro or Premium pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Are these the real theory test questions?
No. The real test’s questions are not published, and the DVSA’s revision questions are licensed separately. Every question here was written from The Highway Code for MySmartCoPilot, and each one names the rule it comes from, so you learn what the test is based on rather than a list of answers.
How many questions do I need to get right to pass?
In the multiple-choice part, 43 of the 50 questions, in 57 minutes. The hazard perception part is marked separately: 44 of 75 points. You must pass both parts. Sources: GOV.UK pass mark and test result.
Does the mock test work like the real one?
It has the same number of questions, the same time and the same pass mark, and you can flag questions, move back and forth and change your answers before finishing. Two differences: the three questions the real test asks about a video clip are written questions here, and the real test is sat at a test centre on its own screens.
Can I practise hazard perception here?
No. Hazard perception needs filmed clips with scoring windows, which this tool does not have. GOV.UK’s practice theory test page has three practice clips from the DVSA.
What happens when The Highway Code changes?
Every question cites the rule it tests, so when the Code changes, the questions that cite the changed rules are re-read and rewritten or removed. If an explanation ever disagrees with the rule it links to, the rule on GOV.UK is right.
Do I need an account, and is anything sent anywhere?
You don’t need an account. The questions are part of the page and your answers and progress stay in your browser; nothing about your practice is uploaded.
Does it work on a phone and without a connection?
Yes. It works at 360 pixels wide with touch or a keyboard (1–4 or A–D to answer, Enter to check). Once the page has loaded, the written questions work offline; press Keep the signs for offline use to load every sign image as well.
