  • Three pages of the fillable edition fanned out on a pale grey table: the cover, where six coloured lines leave a Home interchange for their stops; the packing lines contents page, six line diagrams with every list as a stop; and the H1 Beach holiday list with its Out and Back boxes, sections and the Last look strip at the foot.
  • The H1 Beach holiday list filled in on screen, on a night-blue ground: Goa, a week by the sea, 12 to 18 December, 7 days, 2 bags typed at the top; most Out boxes ticked and the first Back boxes ticked; a close-up shows the list's title, the trip typed in and the Documents and money section with its ticks and the bag and globe marks.
  • A close-up of the Beach list's first column: every row has an Out box and a Back box, ticked for the documents and clothes; notes beside it explain Out (packed for the way there), Back (packed again for the way home), the bag mark (keep it in the bag you carry) and the counts. Below, the Last look strip names the safe, the sockets, the bathroom, the balcony and the sunbed.

  • Six lists side by side, one from each line: E2 Long flight, H4 Snow holiday, T2 Multi-day trek in the black-and-white edition, B1 Business trip, P1 Umrah and Hajj, and W1 Wedding guest in black and white; each has its line's colour, badge and its own sections.

How it helps

Twenty trips, each list written for its trip

Not one long list with headings, but twenty lists, each complete on one page: a beach holiday has the after-sun and the waterproof phone pouch, a Himalayan yatra its registration and a poncho for summer snow, Umrah a spare pair of sandals, a wedding an old outfit for the haldi and the fashion tape, a business trip the screen adapter for the meeting room.

Six lines, like a transit map

The lists sit on six lines: Every trip (Leaving home, Long flight, Overnight train or bus, Road trip by car); Holidays (Beach holiday, Islands, boats and snorkelling, Hill station holiday, Snow holiday); Treks and camping (Day hike, Multi-day trek, Camping weekend); Business (Business trip, Conference or trade fair, Long work stay); Pilgrimage (Umrah and Hajj, Himalayan yatra, Walking pilgrimage); Weddings (Wedding guest, Your destination wedding, Honeymoon). The Every trip line is the journey itself and joins every other line: take the list for where you are going, and add the one for how you get there.

Out and Back, then a Last look

Each thing you pack has two boxes: Out, packed for the way there, and Back, packed again for the way home (things you use up on the way have only Out). At the foot of each list, the Last look strip names the places things get left behind on that kind of trip: the safe and the sockets in a hotel, the berth and the charging point on a train, the drying line on a trek.

Marks that do the thinking

The bag mark shows what stays in the bag you carry: medicines, documents, valuables, and power banks, which airline safety rules keep out of checked bags. The globe marks what only matters abroad. Clothes carry a count, such as 1 a day +1 or 1 per 2 days; small numbers point to the facts we checked, with their sources.

A workbook that counts for your trip

Type the days you will be away, every how many days you can wash, and whether you are going abroad: the lists in the workbook then count the clothes to pack for your trip, and every list shows how much is packed for the way there and the way home. Tested in LibreOffice Calc, and made for Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.

On screen or on paper

Tick and type in the fillable PDF on a computer, a tablet or a phone, or print it at actual size on A4 or US Letter. The black-and-white edition saves ink. Blank lines on every list, and two pages for a list of your own.

Questions

Which list do I need?

The one for where you are going, plus the one for how you get there: the Beach list and the Long flight list, say, or the Himalayan yatra list and the Road trip list. Leaving the house for long? Add Leaving home.

Can I tick the boxes on my phone?

Yes, in a PDF reader app that fills forms; save the file after ticking. If your phone only previews the file, open it in another PDF app, or use the workbook in the Excel or Google Sheets app.

Do the lists work for trips abroad and at home?

Yes. Things that only matter abroad (visas, adapters, cards switched on for use abroad) carry a globe, so you can skip them on a trip at home; the workbook crosses them out and leaves them out of what is left to pack when you say you are not going abroad.

How does the workbook count clothes?

One a day, or one for every two or three days, for the days you are away; if you can wash on the way, it counts the days between washes instead. Swimwear and evening outfits have fixed numbers.

Are the airline and pilgrimage rules up to date?

The facts in the lists were read at their official sources when this edition was made, and each file says when and where. Rules change: check the current rule with your airline or the official site before you travel.

Can I print copies for my family?

Yes. The personal licence includes printing copies for your own household. It doesn't allow sharing, uploading or selling the files.

What if a list misses something?

Write it on a blank line, and tell us at support@mysmartcopilot.com. Fixes of this edition are free from your order page.
