Try a sample

Find and fix an off-by-one error

You are a developer with a sharp eye for boundary errors.

This {{language}} code has an off-by-one bug. The symptom is that {{symptom}}.

The code:
```
{{code}}
```

Work through these steps:
1. Reproduce the symptom with the exact numbers it gives, showing the values the code computes at each step.
2. List every boundary in the code (loop limits, slices, comparisons, page numbers, the rounding of divisions), whether it is inclusive or exclusive, and check each one with the smallest inputs that reach it and with inputs one past it.
3. Point out each wrong boundary and show the fix.
4. Write tests for the boundary values.

Answer with a table of boundaries, the faulty ones with the fix in a code block and the boundary tests.
Sample answer

Sample answer from a general AI assistant: yours will differ.

| boundary | meant | actual | | page number | first page is 1 | code treats the first page as 0 | | start index | inclusive | correct once the page number is fixed | | page_count | rounds up | rounds down: 25 // 10 = 2 | def page_count(total, size): return (total + size - 1) // size def page(items, number, size): start = (number - 1) * size return items[start:start + size] Tests: page_count(0, 10) == 0; page_count(10, 10) == 1; page_count(11, 10) == 2; page(list(range(20)), 1, 10) == list(range(10)); page(list(range(25)), 3, 10) == [20, 21, 22, 23, 24].

Write a query from a plain-English question

You are a careful analyst who writes SQL that answers exactly the question asked.

Write a {{engine}} query that answers this question, {{question}}. The tables are below.

The tables:
```
{{schema}}
```

Work through these steps:
1. Restate the question as precise rules (time range, what counts, ties, missing data).
2. Write the query, using common table expressions where they make it easier to read.
3. Explain how it treats edge cases such as NULLs, duplicates and empty periods.
4. Give a tiny example (a few rows per table) and the result it would produce.

Answer with the rules as a list, the query in one code block, notes on edge cases and a worked example. If the question is ambiguous, state the assumption you made.
Sample answer

Sample answer from a general AI assistant: yours will differ.

Rules: the three full calendar months before the current one; only paid orders; a customer must have at least one paid order in each of the three months; the total covers those three months. WITH recent AS ( SELECT customer_id, total_paise, date_trunc('month', created_at) AS month FROM orders WHERE status = 'paid' AND created_at >= date_trunc('month', now()) - interval '3 months' AND created_at < date_trunc('month', now()) ) SELECT c.id, c.name, SUM(r.total_paise) AS total_paise FROM recent r JOIN customers c ON c.id = r.customer_id GROUP BY c.id, c.name HAVING COUNT(DISTINCT r.month) = 3 ORDER BY total_paise DESC; Example: Asha ordered in August, September and October: listed. Ben skipped September: not listed.

Review code for readability and naming

You are a reviewer who makes code easier for the next person to read.

Review the {{language}} code below only for readability, as if a new team member had to change it next month.

The code:
```
{{code}}
```

Work through these steps:
1. Point out the three to five things that make it hardest to understand, in order of impact.
2. Suggest a concrete rewrite for each (a name, an extracted function, a comment that explains why).
3. Mark anything that is fine as it is, so that I do not over-correct.
4. Show the most improved part rewritten.

Answer with a numbered list of readability problems with suggestions, a short list of things that are fine, and the rewritten part in a code block.
Sample answer

Sample answer from a general AI assistant: yours will differ.

1. Names: p, u, d, x, s, l, i and e say nothing. 2. any hides the shape of a user. 3. 864e5 is milliseconds per day, and s === 1 is a status nobody can guess. 4. The result renames id and em to i and e, which callers must decode. Fine as it is: one filter and one map; the structure is right. const MS_PER_DAY = 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000; const STATUS_ACTIVE = 1; type User = { id: string; em: string; s: number; l: number }; // l: last seen, in ms export function findInactiveUsers(users: User[], inactiveDays = 30) { const now = Date.now(); return users .filter((u) => u.s === STATUS_ACTIVE && (now - u.l) / MS_PER_DAY > inactiveDays) .map((u) => ({ id: u.id, email: u.em })); }

These prompts are in the file exactly as shown, with their variables marked.

How it helps

A finished prompt for each coding job

500 prompts in 25 categories, from understanding a new codebase and debugging to reviews, tests, SQL, APIs, DevOps, mobile apps and AI features, each with a role, steps and the shape of the answer, so you get a structured answer the first time instead of after five rounds of "no, I meant…".

Your code in, a checkable answer out

Every detail you supply is a named slot, such as {{language}} or {{code}}, with what to put and an example; long inputs go between triple backticks. Each prompt asks the assistant to explain why, so you can check the answer, not just paste it.

Know a good answer when you see it

Each card ends with a checklist of what a good answer has, the example input and a shortened sample answer, so you can judge the reply and ask for exactly what is missing.

Find anything fast

Thumb-index tabs, contents, an A to Z index and bookmarks in the PDF; filter the CSV in a spreadsheet; load the JSON into a prompt manager; paste-ready Markdown for your notes or your repository's wiki.

Checked before it reached you

Every prompt was run and its answer checked; near-copies were compared by wording and by meaning and rewritten; security prompts are for defending your own systems; nothing asks you to paste secrets.

Questions

Which AI assistants do the prompts work with?

General AI chat assistants, such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, free or paid, in a browser, an app or an editor's chat panel. The prompts are plain text, so they also work in prompt managers and notes apps.

Which programming languages?

Any. Where a prompt depends on a language, framework or version, that is one of its variables; the examples use Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Go, C#, SQL, Kotlin, Swift, PHP and others.

How were the prompts tested?

Every prompt's example was run on an open-weights AI model on our own computer, and the answer was checked by rules: a real answer, the structure the prompt asks for, and the key points of the job. Where an answer failed, we read it and rewrote the prompt, ran it again, or corrected the check where the answer was in fact right; 491 prompts passed every check, and the other 9 were read and kept because the small test model only missed a fact or a calculation they ask for plainly. 50 test answers, 2 from every category, were also read in full and judged.

Can I use the answers and the example code at work?

Yes. The personal licence covers your own job; the answers you get are yours, and you may use the code in the examples and sample answers in your own projects. The files themselves are for one person: please do not share them with a team or resell them. Check your employer's rules before pasting its code into any AI service.

How do I copy a prompt without broken lines?

Copy it from the CSV, JSON or Markdown file: every prompt is there under the same id as in the PDF.

Do I get fixes?

Yes. Fixes of errors in this edition are free from your order page.

Can I get a refund?

Because the file is ready the moment you pay, we don't refund a purchase once its download has started, unless the file is faulty or not as described: then we fix it, send you a corrected file or refund you. If you live in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you can withdraw from your purchase until your download starts, and you keep every right the law gives you.
