Dynamic pages and browser automation interview questions
Interview questions on dynamic pages and browser automation: warm-ups, then what each harder question tests and how a good answer starts.

What is the difference between a server-rendered and a client-rendered page, for someone collecting data?

A client-rendered catalogue of 50,000 products allows automated collection at one request a second. A colleague plans to drive a headless browser through every Load more click, 12 products a click. Estimate the requests and the time against calling the JSON the page uses, and say what you would check before choosing.
- What it tests
- Estimating a collection's cost in requests and time from what a page does, and checking permission, page size and stability before choosing a route.
- First step
- Measure one page before estimating: count the requests a browser makes for the first screen and for each click, in the Network panel or by reading the page's script, and note how many products each JSON answer carries. Then multiply by the number of clicks the catalogue needs.
- Follow-ups
-
- The JSON address accepts limit=500. Do you use it?
- The product images are needed too. How does that change the estimate?
- Halfway through, the JSON answers change shape. What should the collector do?

The JSON request you found in the Network panel works only with an X-Session-Token header and a cookie, and answers 401 without them. A teammate proposes copying both from the browser into the collector's code. What do you do, and why?
- What it tests
- Telling public data from data behind a session, handling credentials, and choosing a legitimate route when an address needs authentication.
- First step
- Work out what the token is before touching it: does the site give it to every visitor, or only after a login, and what do its terms say about automated use of that address? Then check whether the same data reaches you without it, in the page's HTML, in a script element or through a documented API.
- Follow-ups
-
- The token is in the page source and the same for every visitor. Does that change your answer?
- The site's terms allow automated reading of its catalogue. Does that settle it?
- How do you make sure a collector never sends a credential by accident?
