Ward Desk's legal team insists that the help text on its noise complaint form quotes the city bylaw word for word, in a 70-word sentence. Research shows residents misread who may complain and when. How do you work with legal to fix the page?
- What it tests
- Treating accuracy and clarity as one goal, layering exact wording behind plain guidance, and using reader evidence rather than opinion to settle the disagreement.
- First step
- Ask what legal is protecting: an exact term, a duty or a risk of a wrong promise. Then show them what residents understood from the current sentence, in their own words, before you propose any wording.
- Follow-ups
-
- Legal says a paraphrase could be challenged in court. How do you answer?
- How would you test the new wording before it goes live?
- The bylaw changes next year. What keeps the page and the bylaw in step?

MealBox's release pipeline blocks any interface string scoring under 70 on Flesch reading ease. Its first run blocks "Changes start from your next delivery" and 140 other strings, most of them a single line. The product manager still wants a quality gate. What should it check instead, and how would you show that it works?
- What it tests
- Seeing why a score gate misjudges one-line strings, matching each check to a real way text fails, and proving with reader and outcome evidence that the new gate works.
- First step
- Read what the gate blocked before changing anything. "Changes start from your next delivery" scores 59.7 because "delivery" carries four of its ten syllables, so the number reflects one long word, not unclear text. Then ask the manager what the gate should prevent: facts lost in a rewrite, words customers misread, or text nobody has tried on a reader. Each has a check that fits it better than a score.
- Follow-ups
-
- Which of the 141 blocked strings would you test with customers first?
- Tomorrow's release is blocked by the old gate. What ships, and what waits?
- The manager still wants one number on a dashboard. What do you offer?
