Applications open in two weeks. You have three projects with written case studies, but no site. Do you build one page or five, on which host and at which address, and what do you leave out until later?
- What it tests
- Scoping a site to its five jobs in the time there is, choosing a host and an address that need no upkeep, and cutting what proves nothing.
- First step
- List the five jobs and what you already have for each. The case studies exist, so the work left is the home page, the about text, the resume page and a contact route; then decide whether five pages or five sections finish sooner.
- Follow-ups
-
- Do you use a template, or write the HTML yourself?
- Is a custom domain worth it within two weeks?
- Which of the three case studies goes first?

Two weeks after your portfolio goes live, spam fills your inbox and a stranger calls the phone number in the resume PDF linked from the site. What do you change on the site, and how do you limit what is already out?
- What it tests
- Separating public and private contact details, fixing the site and its files, and limiting what copies and search results already hold.
- First step
- Take the phone number out of every public file at once: the PDF, the pages and any image with text. Then move the site's contact route to an address used only for job mail, and work through what is already out.
- Follow-ups
-
- The old PDF is still in the repository's history. Does that matter?
- Should you hide the e-mail address with a script?
- How do you deal with the spam that already arrives?

You have one evening before your applications go out. Your portfolio's home page fails contrast in three places, two images have no alt text, and its Largest Contentful Paint is 6 seconds on mobile. What do you fix first, how do you check each fix, and what can you not check from the HTML?
- What it tests
- Ordering fixes by how many readers each problem blocks and how long it takes, checking each with a measure, and knowing what needs a keyboard or real visitors.
- First step
- Sort the problems by who they block and how long each fix takes. Text below 4.5:1 and images without alt text shut readers out and take minutes to fix; the loading time needs the largest image changed and measured again.
- Follow-ups
-
- The brand orange fails contrast. Do you keep it?
- Which image is the Largest Contentful Paint, and how do you know?
- What do you test with the keyboard before you send the link?

PageSpeed Insights shows your portfolio's home page with a Largest Contentful Paint of 4.8 seconds on mobile. How do you find the cause, bring it under 2.5 seconds, and know that the fix worked for real visitors?
- What it tests
- Finding the element behind the metric, reducing its bytes and its delay, telling lab data from field data, and checking with the right measure.
- First step
- Find which element is the largest contentful paint and what must arrive before it can be painted. Then count those bytes against the connection the lab test simulates, before changing anything.
- Follow-ups
-
- The report shows no field data. What do you trust?
- Would a faster host fix it?
- The LCP is fine, but the page jumps while it loads. What now?

A search for your name shows your portfolio with the title "Home" and a snippet made of your navigation menu, and a link to it shared in a chat shows no picture. What is wrong, and what do you change on each page?
- What it tests
- Knowing what search results and link previews read from a page's head, and writing titles, descriptions and share images of each page's own.
- First step
- Open the page's head and list what it gives: the title element, the meta description and the Open Graph tags. A title that names no page, a missing description and no share image explain all three symptoms.
- Follow-ups
-
- Google rewrote your new title anyway. Why might it?
- Should every page have the same description, to be consistent?
- Would ProfilePage markup help your name's search result?
