You have three years as a backend engineer and apply for a front-end role. The loop adds a UI coding round and a front-end design round. How do you prepare in six weeks, and what evidence do you bring?
- What it tests
- Mapping a loop's added rounds to a plan, honest use of transferable evidence, and building new evidence quickly.
- First step
- Write the loop down round by round and mark what you already have evidence for: coding and behavioural, probably. Then plan the six weeks around the two front-end rounds, with one shipped piece of front-end work as the evidence.
- Follow-ups
-
- The interviewer asks why you are leaving backend work.
- You run out of time for the design round's preparation. What do you cut?
- How do you show accessibility skills you have never used at work?

Checkout errors rose to 3 % ten minutes ago, just after a deploy. You are the engineer on call. Talk me through your first ten minutes.
- What it tests
- Triage before diagnosis, a systematic troubleshooting order, clear communication during an incident, and follow-through.
- First step
- Say aloud what you know: the error rate, when it started and the deploy that preceded it. Then stop the damage first, by rolling the deploy back or turning it off, before you look for the cause.
- Follow-ups
-
- The rollback does not bring the errors down. Now what?
- Who do you tell, and what do you say?
- What goes into the postmortem?

You were laid off in a restructuring three months ago. Why did it happen, and why should we hire you now?
- What it tests
- A short, honest account without blame, evidence of what you did since, and a forward-looking case for the role.
- First step
- Give one neutral sentence on what happened, with its scale if you know it. Then give one piece of evidence from the three months since, and end on what you are ready for in this role.
- Follow-ups
-
- Why were you one of the people chosen?
- What did you learn from the experience?
- How do we know it will not affect your commitment here?

You spent five years as a mechanical engineer. Why would you succeed as a software engineer here, against candidates with computer science degrees?
- What it tests
- Evidence-led framing of a career switch, the value of domain knowledge, and honesty about what is still to learn.
- First step
- Lead with the software you have built and its effect, with a number. Then name what your first field gives you that the other candidates lack, and one gap you are closing, with its plan.
- Follow-ups
-
- Why did you leave mechanical engineering?
- Which computer science fundamentals are you weakest in?
- Would you accept a more junior level to make the switch?

The role is in another country, and you would need a work visa. When and how do you raise it, and what do you check before the final round?
- What it tests
- Raising work authorisation early and truthfully, knowing who files what, and checking the facts that can end a process.
- First step
- Raise it on the first call, in one sentence: you would need sponsorship for a work visa, and you would like to know whether the employer offers it for this role. Then ask who files and when, and confirm it in writing.
- Follow-ups
-
- The recruiter says sponsorship is decided only after the offer.
- A third party offers to employ you instead, as a contractor.
- The visa rules change between the offer and the filing.
