You are about to join a team spread across Pune, Ohio and Berlin. In the interview, the hiring manager asks how you will make sure people understand you on calls. What do you say?
- What it tests
- Knowing that being understood, not an accent, is the goal, and naming concrete habits that make speech easy to follow and easy to check.
- First step
- Separate accent from being understood: say that your aim is to be understood the first time. Then name two or three habits you already use, such as preparing your points, saying key words and numbers in full, and summarising at the end of a call.
- Follow-ups
-
- A colleague often asks you to repeat yourself. What do you change first?
- How would you know whether your updates are clear?
- What do you do when you cannot follow a fast speaker?

A recruiter for a job in the UK asks whether your English meets the visa rule. How do you check what you need, and what do you send them?
- What it tests
- Finding the official rule instead of trusting second-hand advice, matching your evidence to it, and keeping the employer's requirement and the visa's rule apart.
- First step
- Open GOV.UK's page for the visa route the employer will sponsor and note the level, the skills and the accepted ways to prove it. Then compare it with what you already hold, such as a test result or a degree taught in English.
- Follow-ups
-
- Your degree was taught in English outside the UK. Does it count?
- Your test result is three years old. What do you do?
- The employer asks for a higher score than the visa rule. Which one applies?
