IIM Bangalore’s PGP application for the 2027–29 batch asks for a statement of purpose and two online references, and it cannot be submitted until both referees have submitted theirs. Three documents then describe you: the statement, the two references and the CAT form, which cannot be changed after it is submitted.
The statement is “Why MBA?” in writing; the references are other people’s words about your work; and all three must tell the same story, in the same months and the same titles.
A statement of purpose is “Why MBA?” in writing
A statement of purpose (SOP): A short essay in an application on what you have done, what you want to do next and why the programme fits: the written form of "Why MBA?". IIM Bangalore lists one among the required documents of its PGP application. answers on paper what “Why MBA?” answers aloud, so build it on the same chain: evidence first, the goal second, the programme third. IIM Bangalore lists a statement of purpose among the required documents of its PGP application. Its procedure sets no length, so keep to whatever limit the form gives. Follow Neha’s statement, paragraph by paragraph:
The drawing shows the whole scene; its 7 steps are listed below.
Every step as text
- Evidence first. Neha opens with her work, not her ambitions: 22 months as a financial analyst at a logistics firm, and six return routes found in the fuel bills, four merged and the monthly fuel bill about 9 % lower.
- The gap. Then what that work showed her: she can find where money leaks, but decisions such as a new fleet or a client contract are taken by people who can cost them.
- The goal. The goal follows from the gap and is named by its function: operations planning in a logistics or manufacturing firm.
- The programme. Only now the programme, and only what meets her gap: operations and finance in the first year, and the summer project between the two years to try planning work.
- The close. A closing sentence on what she brings to the class: the habit of reading costs from the data, learned in 22 months of route bills.
- A draft that opens with praise. A draft that opens by praising the institute puts the programme where the evidence should be. A reader is left asking what the applicant has done, and the statement has to start again.
- The order that holds. Evidence, gap, goal, programme, close: the written chain of "Why MBA?". Every fact in it must also be the one on her CAT form.
Written, the chain can carry more evidence than a two-minute answer, and a reader can check it at leisure. So every fact in it must be one you can show and repeat in the interview, and none may stretch what your form says.

Choose two referees who know your work, within the rules
References for MBA admission are easy to treat as a formality, but IIM Bangalore’s procedure makes two online references a mandatory part of the application. You enter each referee: A person who writes a reference for an applicant. IIM Bangalore asks for two, preferably an employer, current or past, or a teacher where the applicant studied, who submit online themselves before the application's last date.’s email and contact details; the referees submit online, themselves, on or before the application’s last date; and the application can be submitted only once the reference section is complete, with no separate extension for references. References should preferably come from an employer, current or past, or a teacher of an institution where you studied. Choose your two against those rules and your own situation:
Answer the questions above: the table then marks what fits your case and says why the rest does not.
| Referee | Knows your work | IIM Bangalore's preference | Submits in time | Risk at your job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your current manager Who it is: supervises your work now | Good sees your work every week | Good an employer, as the procedure prefers | Mixed often busy: ask early | Mixed tells your employer you may leave |
| A former manager Who it is: supervised you in an earlier job | Good supervised you, if less recently | Good a past employer counts | Mixed may be harder to reach | Good no risk to your present job |
| A teacher who taught you Who it is: at a college where you studied | Mixed knows your study, not your job | Good a teacher where you studied | Good used to writing references | Good none |
| A senior colleague Who it is: saw your work, never supervised it | Mixed saw your work but did not judge it | Poor neither your employer nor your teacher | Good easy to reach | Mixed may mention it at work |
| A family friend with a title Who it is: knows you, not your work | Poor has not seen your work | Poor neither an employer nor a teacher | Good willing and quick | Good none |
How the answers decide
- “Do you have full-time work experience?” No, I am a fresher: rules out Your current manager and A senior colleague and adds a caveat to A former manager. With no job, a past employer can only be an internship supervisor who saw your work closely; teachers where you studied fit the procedure's preference best.
- “Do you have full-time work experience?” Yes: rules out A family friend with a title. A senior title is not knowledge of your work, and a family friend is neither an employer nor a teacher.
- “Do you have full-time work experience?” No, I am a fresher: rules out A family friend with a title. A senior title is not knowledge of your work, and a family friend is neither an employer nor a teacher.
- “Does your employer know that you are applying?” Not yet: adds a caveat to Your current manager. Asking your current manager tells your employer you may leave; a former manager or a teacher avoids that until you are ready.
- “Can you reach a former manager this month?” No: rules out A former manager. A referee you cannot reach cannot submit before the last date, and the application cannot be submitted until both references are in.
So at IIM Bangalore your references for MBA admission must be in before you can submit: your referees’ deadline is yours. A senior title helps nobody; a referee who has seen your work and can submit in time does.

Your statement and references must match your CAT form
The CAT 2026 Registration Guide allows no change to the form after submission, so the form is the fixed point and the statement is checked against it. The program compares five claims of Neha’s draft with her record:
"""Five claims of a draft statement of purpose compared with the application record they must match, the record of
an invented candidate, Neha. The CAT form cannot be changed after it is submitted, so the statement is what changes.

MONTH_DAYS = 30.44 # an average month
# Each claim of the draft: (its words in the draft, the record line it rests on, the value the draft gives).
CLAIMS = [

1. "after a B.Com with 71 %": matches the record 2. "my Class 12 marks of 84 %": matches the record 3. "at a logistics firm": matches the record 4. "as a senior analyst": says Senior analyst; the record says Financial analyst 5. "for two years": says about 24 months; the record says about 22 months (670 days) 3 of 5 claims match. Your run, in this browser
Two claims stretch the record: “senior analyst” for financial analyst, and “two years” for about 22 months. Both are small, and both are what an employer’s letter would show, since IIM Calcutta asks for one giving your start date, end date and designation. Brief your referees with the same facts, so that three documents tell one story.
Rounding your experience up
“Two years” for 22 months sounds harmless, but it is a claim your documents contradict. Give the months, or the dates, exactly as your record shows them.

Interview questions
Warm-up: what is a statement of purpose in an MBA application?
It is a short essay that says what you have done, what you want to do next and why the programme fits: the written form of “Why MBA?”. IIM Bangalore lists a statement of purpose among the required documents of its PGP application for the 2027–29 batch, with two online references. Its procedure sets no length, so the limit is whatever the form gives, and because the CAT form cannot be changed after submission, every date, role and mark in the statement must match it.
-
Fresher to mid
Your preferred referee, your manager, is travelling for two weeks, and IIM Bangalore's application closes in ten days. What do you do?
-
Fresher to mid
Your CAT form gives your work experience as 700 days. Your statement says "two years", and your referee's draft says "nearly two and a half years". What do you change, and where?
-
Fresher to mid
Your statement of purpose would work for any programme: nothing in it is about this one. How do you make it specific without listing the institute's rankings or awards?

-
What is a statement of purpose in an MBA application?
The written form of "Why MBA?": evidence first, then the gap, the goal and the programme. IIM Bangalore lists it among the required documents of its PGP application for the 2027–29 batch.
-
How do IIM Bangalore's two online references work?
You enter each referee's details; they submit online themselves by the application's last date, and the application cannot be submitted until both are in. Your referees' deadline is yours.
-
Whom should you choose as referees?
People who have seen your work: preferably an employer, current or past, or a teacher where you studied, who can submit in time. A senior title helps nobody.
-
Why must your statement match your CAT form month for month?
The form cannot change after submission, so the statement is checked against it. "Senior analyst" for financial analyst, or "two years" for about 22 months, is a claim your documents contradict.
Key takeaways
- A statement of purpose is “Why MBA?” in writing: evidence first, then the gap, the goal and the programme.
- IIM Bangalore’s two online references are part of the application, so your referees’ deadline is yours.
- Choose referees who have seen your work: an employer, current or past, or a teacher where you studied.
- The CAT form cannot change, so the statement and the references are checked against it, month for month.
