About the F&O and Intraday Turnover & Tax P&L Calculator (India)

Profits and losses from futures and options and from intraday share trading are business income, not capital gains — and the turnover that decides whether you need a tax audit is not the value of your contracts. The ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit counts the difference of each trade: the profits of your winning trades plus the losses of your losing trades.

Import your broker’s tax P&L report or tradebook (CSV or Excel, from one broker or several), or type the totals. The calculator works out the turnover segment by segment, the speculative (intraday) and non-speculative (F&O) business income after brokerage, STT and your other expenses, whether a tax audit and books of account are needed for FY 2025-26 or Tax Year 2026-27, how a loss is set off and carried forward, and the figures for ITR-3. Files are read in your browser and never uploaded.

Without a pass, the free preview shows the business turnover in full, with the tax audit answer and the first rows of each table; a Premium pass unlocks every figure — the income, the set-off, the losses to carry forward and the ITR-3 lines — with the summary, the CSV files and the PDF report.

How to use it

  1. Choose the tax year. FY 2025-26 follows the Income-tax Act, 1961; Tax Year 2026-27 the Income-tax Act, 2025, whose audit rule for a low profit is stricter.
  2. Import your broker’s tax P&L report — a trade-wise one is best — or your tradebook, as Excel or CSV. Add files from every broker you used. Check the columns found and what the trades are (F&O, intraday or delivery); for a tradebook, enter how open positions were settled and the charges from your contract notes. Or choose Type totals and enter the profits and losses of each segment.
  3. Enter your other trading expenses, your income under the other heads, any losses brought forward and your tax regime. Under More rules and choices, say whether you used the presumptive scheme (section 44AD) in earlier years.
  4. Read the turnover, the audit answer with its reasons, the set-off and carry-forward, and the lines for ITR-3. Copy the summary, or download the summary and the trades as CSV or the whole report as a PDF — with a pass, or after unlocking this result.

Examples

A salaried trader with an F&O loss
Input
FY 2025-26 · intraday: profits ₹64,200, losses ₹21,750 · futures: profits ₹3,15,400, losses ₹4,92,800 · options: profits ₹2,48,300, losses ₹3,61,950 · charges ₹31,240, STT ₹13,130, other expenses ₹12,000 · salary ₹18,00,000, interest ₹40,000
Result
Turnover ₹15,04,400 · F&O loss ₹3,42,290, set off against the intraday profit of ₹37,320 and the interest of ₹40,000 (never the salary) · ₹2,64,970 carried forward · no tax audit for FY 2025-26

For Tax Year 2026-27 the same figures need a tax audit: the business income is below 6% of turnover and total income is above the basic exemption limit (section 58(3) of the Income-tax Act, 2025).

One options trade
Input
75 calls bought at ₹120 and sold at ₹170
Result
Turnover ₹3,750, the profit of the trade — or ₹12,750, the premium received on the sale, with the literal reading of the Guidance Note

How turnover is worked out

The ICAI Guidance Note on Tax Audit under section 44AB (chapter 5, sales, turnover and gross receipts) sets the method for shares, securities and derivatives:

  • Speculative (intraday) trades: the total of the favourable and unfavourable differences. Each trade is a separate transaction, so a loss is added, not netted against a profit.
  • Futures and options: the total of the favourable and unfavourable differences of squared-off trades; the differences of reverse trades too; an open position counts in the year it is squared off; for a delivery-settled contract, the trade price less the settlement price.
  • Premium on options sold is included in turnover, but “where the premium received is included for determining net profit for transactions, then such net profit should not be separately included”. Most broker reports and accountants read this as: the premium is already inside each option trade’s profit or loss, so options turnover is the absolute profit or loss of every trade. Read literally, the premium received on the sale replaces that trade’s profit or loss. The calculator uses the first reading unless you choose the second, always shows both totals, and says when the choice changes the audit answer.
  • Delivery trades of an investor are capital gains and are left out; held as stock-in-trade, their sale value is turnover.

The method is only for the audit limits: your income is the net profit or loss, not the turnover.

Speculative and non-speculative income

A trade settled without delivery is a speculative transaction — section 43(5) of the 1961 Act, section 66(31) of the Income-tax Act, 2025. Derivatives traded on a recognised stock exchange through a registered broker (equity, index, currency and commodity futures and options) are excluded from that definition, so F&O is non-speculative business income and intraday equity is a speculation business, kept separate from any other business (section 26(3); Explanation 2 to section 28).

Brokerage, exchange and SEBI charges, stamp duty and GST on them are business expenses, and so is STT on trades whose income is business income (section 32(k); section 36(1)(xv) of the 1961 Act). Other costs spent wholly for the trading — data, software, the business share of internet bills, interest on money borrowed to trade — reduce the income too.

When a tax audit is needed

The calculator applies the same tests as the presumptive tax and tax audit checker, to the turnover of all your businesses together:

  • Turnover above ₹10 crore, when cash receipts and cash payments are each 5% or less (exchange trades are paid through banks), or above ₹1 crore otherwise — section 63 of the 2025 Act; section 44AB(a) of the 1961 Act.
  • A profit below 6% of turnover, or a loss, while the presumptive scheme is open to you (a resident individual or HUF with turnover up to ₹3 crore, or ₹2 crore with more cash): for Tax Year 2026-27, an audit when total income is above the basic exemption limit — section 58(3) with section 63, Table Sl. No. 2. For FY 2025-26, only if you declared presumptive income under section 44AD in one of the five years before (the five-year rule, sections 44AD(4)–(5) and 44AB(e)).
  • Declaring 6% or more within those limits is declaring on the presumptive basis: no audit (section 63(2); first proviso to section 44AB).

The audit report is due one month before the return due date. Without it, the 2025 Act charges a fee of ₹75,000 for a delay of up to a month and ₹1,50,000 after that (section 428(c), as substituted by the Finance Act, 2026); for FY 2025-26 the penalty is 0.5% of turnover, up to ₹1,50,000 (section 271B).

Losses: set-off and carry forward

  • A non-speculative (F&O) loss is set off first against other business income of the year, intraday profit included, then against any other head — house property, other sources, capital gains — but never against salary (sections 108(1) and 109(1)(a); sections 70 and 71(2A) of the 1961 Act). What is left is carried forward for eight tax years, against business income only (section 112; section 72).
  • A speculation loss is set off only against speculation profit, and carried forward for four tax years (section 113; section 73).
  • A loss is carried forward only if the return is filed by its due date (section 121; section 80).

Brought-forward losses you enter are used in the same way: a speculation loss only against this year’s intraday profit, a business loss against both F&O and intraday income.

Reading broker files

A file is read by its column headings, so reports from brokers such as Zerodha Console, Groww, Upstox, Angel One or Dhan work as long as they have the usual columns:

  • A tax P&L report needs a symbol and a profit or loss column, or buy and sell values (or quantity with buy and sell prices). Charge columns — brokerage, exchange charges, SEBI fees, stamp duty, GST — are added up, and STT or CTT is kept apart. If the profit column is after charges, tick the box and the charges are added back to get each trade’s difference.
  • A tradebook needs the date, symbol, buy or sell, quantity and price. Cash-segment shares bought and sold on the same day are matched as intraday; the rest is delivery. Derivatives are matched contract by contract, first in first out, across days. Positions left open are listed so you can enter how they were settled — 0 for options that expired worthless.

Rows are classified from the segment or product column, the symbol (CE, PE and FUT contracts) and the dates; when a file holds only one kind of trade, say so for the whole file. A report with one row per contract (scrip-wise) gives a lower turnover than a trade-wise one.

Only trades squared off in the tax year you choose are counted; trades from another year in the same file are left out, and the page says how many. When a workbook keeps intraday and F&O trades on separate sheets, each sheet with trades is offered so you can count it too.

The lines for ITR-3

Trading income goes in ITR-3. The calculator lists the figures with the serial numbers of ITR-3 for AY 2026-27, as in the CBDT schema and validation rules: turnover and income from intraday trading (Part A – Trading Account, Sl. 12a and 12b) and from futures and options (Sl. 12c and 12d), the expenses, Schedule BP for speculative and other business income, Schedules CYLA and BFLA for the set-off, Schedule CFL for losses carried forward and Part B-TI Sl. 3(ii) for speculative income.

Limitations

  • For a resident individual or HUF. Firms, LLPs and companies have other limits and forms; a non-resident cannot use the presumptive scheme.
  • It does not work out the tax: put the business income into the income tax calculator with your other income.
  • Excel and CSV files only — not PDF contract notes. Columns that are not found automatically can be chosen by hand.
  • The Guidance Note is written for section 44AB of the 1961 Act; the same method is applied for Tax Year 2026-27.
  • Shares received or delivered when a stock derivative is physically settled, and exercise or assignment of options, are counted only through the settlement prices you enter.
  • Delivery trades held as investments are capital gains — work them out with the FIFO capital gains calculator.
  • Whether you are a trader or an investor, and which reading of the Guidance Note to follow, are judgements to confirm with a chartered accountant before you file.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, F&O and Intraday Turnover & Tax P&L Calculator (India) shows the business turnover in full, with the tax audit answer and the first rows of each table (up to 3); every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is a tax audit compulsory if I have an F&O loss?

Not because of the loss alone for FY 2025-26: an audit is needed if turnover is above ₹10 crore (with cash under 5%), or if you declared presumptive income under section 44AD in one of the previous five years and your total income is above the basic exemption limit. From Tax Year 2026-27, section 58(3) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 asks for an audit whenever a business that could use the presumptive scheme declares less than 6% of turnover — a loss included — and total income is above the basic exemption limit.

Is the option premium part of turnover?

The Guidance Note includes premium received on options sold, but not again where it is already inside the trade’s net profit. The common reading — and the calculator’s default — is the absolute profit or loss of every option trade. The literal reading counts the premium received on the sale instead; the calculator shows both and tells you if the choice changes the audit answer.

Can I set off my F&O loss against my salary?

No. A business loss can be set off against any head except salary (section 109(1)(a); section 71(2A) of the 1961 Act). It reduces income from house property, other sources and capital gains, and what is left is carried forward for eight years.

Is intraday trading income speculative?

Yes. Shares bought and sold on the same day are settled without delivery, so they are speculative transactions and a separate speculation business. A speculation loss can be set off only against speculation profit, now or in the next four years. F&O on a recognised exchange is not speculative.

Can I claim STT as an expense?

Yes, when the trades are business income: securities and commodities transaction tax is deductible in computing business income (section 32(k) of the 2025 Act; section 36(1)(xv) of the 1961 Act). It is not deductible from capital gains.

Which return form do F&O traders file?

ITR-3, which has Trading Account lines for intraday and F&O turnover and income, and the schedules for setting off and carrying forward losses. ITR-4 is possible only on the presumptive basis, with total income up to ₹50 lakh and no loss to carry forward.

Are my broker files uploaded?

No. They are read by your browser on your device; MySmartCoPilot never receives them, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
