Print Large PDF on Multiple Pages (Poster / Tiles)
Print big pages at home, at real size, on sheets you tape together.

Margins, overlap & marks
The margin must be at least what your printer can’t print; the cut marks and labels go there.

Print at Actual size (100%) — not “Fit to page” — or the pieces won’t line up and the poster won’t be to scale.
About the Print Large PDF on Multiple Pages (Poster / Tiles)
Print a page that is too big for your printer — an A0 or A1 drawing, a site plan, a poster, a sewing or craft pattern — across several ordinary sheets of A4, US Letter, A3, Legal or Tabloid paper, and tape them together. Print it at its actual size (so a pattern’s measurements stay true), at any scale, or make it a set number of sheets across; Auto orientation uses whichever needs fewer sheets.
Each sheet prints inside a margin your printer can handle, and neighbouring sheets share an overlap strip so there is no gap when they are joined. Corner cut marks, a dashed line showing where the next sheet’s edge goes, a label on every sheet (A1, A2 … B1 …) and an assembly map page make putting it together straightforward. The page is placed as it is — lines and text stay sharp at any size — and the file never leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Choose the PDF (or drag it onto the box). The preview shows the page divided into sheets.
- Pick Actual size (100%), a Scale, or how many Sheets across, and the paper you will print on.
- Check the margin and overlap under Margins, overlap & marks (10 mm each by default) and step through the sheets in the preview.
- Press Make tiles, download, and print every page at Actual size / 100% — not “Fit to page”.
- Trim the left and top margin of each sheet along the cut marks, lay it over its neighbours with its edge on their dashed line, line up the picture and tape or glue it, starting at A1.
Examples
A0 page (841 × 1189 mm), A4 paper, 10 mm margin and overlap
25 sheets, 5 columns × 5 rows (the same on US Letter), plus the assembly map
A2 page (420 × 594 mm), Auto orientation
8 landscape A4 sheets (2 × 4); portrait sheets would need 9
A1 page (594 × 841 mm) on A4
15 landscape sheets (3 × 5)
A4 page, 2 sheets across
Poster 370 × 523 mm (176.2%) on 2 × 2 A4 sheets
Common uses
- Printing a sewing, quilting, woodworking or craft pattern at home at its true size.
- Checking an architectural drawing or site plan at full scale without a plotter.
- Making a large poster, banner, map or classroom chart from an ordinary office printer.
- Printing a full-size template for cutting, painting or embroidery.
How the sheets are worked out
The printable area of a sheet is the paper minus the margin on every side, and each extra sheet adds that area minus the overlap. So sheets across = ⌈(poster width − overlap) ÷ (printable width − overlap)⌉, and the same for rows. For an A0 poster on A4 with 10 mm margins and overlap: printable 190 × 277 mm, each sheet adds 180 × 267 mm, so ⌈831 ÷ 180⌉ = 5 across and ⌈1179 ÷ 267⌉ = 5 down — 25 sheets. The poster is centred on the grid, so the leftover white space is shared equally around it.
Margins, overlap and marks
- Margin: most printers can’t print the outer few millimetres of a sheet. Set the margin to at least that; the cut marks and labels are printed there.
- Overlap: the strip of the poster printed on both neighbouring sheets. It is what you glue or tape over, and it hides small differences in how the sheets were cut.
- Cut marks sit in the margin at the corners of the printed area. A dashed line on each sheet shows where the next sheet’s edge goes; it ends up underneath that sheet.
- Labels name each sheet by row letter and column number — A1 is top left, B1 is below it — and say which sheets it is laid over.
Putting the poster together
- Print every sheet at Actual size (100%). With “Fit to page” the printer shrinks each sheet slightly, the pieces stop lining up and measurements are no longer true. Measure one sheet (or a pattern’s test square) with a ruler before printing the rest.
- Cut off the margin along the cut marks on the left and top edge of each sheet, except on the first column (left) and first row (top).
- Starting with A1, lay each sheet over its left and upper neighbours so its trimmed edge meets their dashed line, line up the picture, and tape or glue it. The assembly map shows where every sheet goes.
Paper sizes and sources
- A0 841 × 1189 mm (one square metre), A1 594 × 841 mm, A2 420 × 594 mm, A3 297 × 420 mm, A4 210 × 297 mm — ISO 216 (checked against Markus Kuhn’s ISO paper size reference, University of Cambridge).
- US Letter 8.5 × 11 in and Tabloid 11 × 17 in — ANSI/ASME Y14.1 sizes A and B; US Legal 8.5 × 14 in.
- Pages are placed as form XObjects (ISO 32000-1 §8.10), so the tiles print the original vector drawing at any scale.
Limitations
- The result depends on printing at actual size: printers that add their own scaling or shift the page slightly need a test sheet first.
- At most 2,000 sheets in one file; very large enlargements need a bigger paper size or a smaller scale.
- Sheets are not skipped when they would be blank (for example around an irregular pattern) — leave them out in the print dialog if you like.
- Links, bookmarks and fillable fields aren’t carried over; form values, and comments set to print, are printed as they look.
- Encrypted or password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
- The first use downloads the PDF engine once, so it needs an internet connection.

Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The tiles are made by your browser on your device; nothing is sent to MySmartCoPilot or anyone else.
How do I print a sewing pattern at the right size?
Choose Actual size (100%), make the tiles and print them with the print dialog set to Actual size or 100% — never “Fit to page”. Measure the pattern’s test square on the first sheet before printing the rest.
How many A4 sheets does an A0 poster need?
At real size with 10 mm margins and a 10 mm overlap, 25 sheets (5 × 5). Smaller margins or overlap can reduce that a little; the preview shows the count as you change them.
What is the overlap for?
Neighbouring sheets both print the overlap strip, so after trimming one sheet’s margin you can lay it over the other and line up the picture, with nothing missing at the join. 10 mm is easy to glue; use more if your printer shifts the paper.
Will the poster be blurry?
Not if the PDF is a vector drawing: the page is placed as it is, so lines and text are drawn sharply at any size. Photos and scans inside the PDF only have the detail they were made with, so they look softer the more they are enlarged.
