About the Nepali Date Converter (BS to AD, AD to BS)

Convert any date between Nepal’s Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar and the Gregorian (AD) calendar, in either direction, from 1 Baisakh 2000 to 30 Chaitra 2090 BS (14 April 1943 to 13 April 2034 AD). Every result shows the weekday, the date in Nepali with Devanagari numerals (१८ असोज २०८३, आइतबार), the numeric forms used on forms and in letters (२०८३/०६/१८), the day of the BS year and Nepal’s fiscal year.

The page opens on today’s date in Nepal. A month calendar shows any BS month with the AD date in every square, and the age calculator counts an age in BS years, months and days, the way Nepali forms ask for it. You can type or paste a BS date in English or Nepali (2083-06-18, 18 Asoj 2083, २०८३ असोज १८ गते), and everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. To convert an AD date, pick it under AD date. To convert a BS date, choose the year, month and day, or type or paste it, for example 2083-06-18, 18 Asoj 2083 or २०८३ असोज १८.
  2. Read the converted date at the top, then the Nepali, numeric and English forms below it with the fiscal year. Copy any line, or use Copy link to share the date.
  3. Browse the BS month calendar with the arrows. Select a day, or move with the arrow keys and Page Up / Page Down, to convert it.
  4. For an age in BS, choose the date of birth under Age in BS (or use the date above). The age is counted on today’s date unless you choose another.

BS and AD months have different lengths, so the months-and-days part of an age differs by a few days between the calendars.

Common uses

  • Filling in Nepali government forms, citizenship, passport and job applications that ask for dates and ages in BS.
  • Reading BS dates on Nepali documents, certificates and letters, or writing them in Nepali digits.
  • Finding the AD date of a BS birthday, anniversary or deadline, or the BS date of an AD one.
  • Checking which Nepali fiscal year (from 1 Shrawan) a date belongs to.

How the Bikram Sambat calendar works

Bikram Sambat is Nepal’s official calendar. It is a solar calendar: each of its twelve months — Baisakh, Jestha, Asar, Shrawan, Bhadra, Asoj, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra — begins when the Sun enters a new sign of the zodiac (a sankranti), so the year starts on 1 Baisakh in mid-April. From mid-April to 31 December the BS year is the AD year plus 57; from 1 January to mid-April it is the AD year plus 56.

Because the Sun appears to move more slowly when the Earth is farthest from it in early July, the summer months Jestha, Asar and Shrawan (rarely Bhadra) can have 32 days, while the winter months from Kartik to Falgun may have only 29. There is no fixed rule like the Gregorian leap year: the month lengths of each year are set by Nepal’s calendar committee, the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Bikas Samiti, so every converter needs a table of them.

Where the month lengths come from

  • 2000–2083 BS: the month-length table of the open-source nepali-date-converter library, checked against the published calendar for 2083 and against well-known dates such as Democracy Day (7 Falgun 2007 = 18 February 1951), Republic Day (15 Jestha 2065 = 28 May 2008) and Constitution Day (3 Asoj 2072 = 20 September 2015).
  • 2084–2086 BS: the calendars already published for those years by Hamro Patro and nepalicalendar.rat32.com, which agree with each other and with the nepali-datetime project’s table. The library’s older projection is a day off in several months of those years, so it is not used there.
  • 2087–2090 BS: the library’s projection. Calendars published this far ahead already disagree by a day (one puts 1 Baisakh 2088 on 16 April 2031, others on 15 April), so the page marks these years as approximate.

Writing BS dates

In Nepali the date is written year, month, day: २०८३/०६/१८, or in letters वि.सं. २०८३ असोज १८ गते. Nepali calendars print it as १८ असोज २०८३, आइतबार. In English it is usually 18 Asoj 2083 or 2083-06-18 BS.

Month names are spelled in several ways — Baisakh or Baishakh, Asar or Ashadh, Shrawan or Saun, Bhadra or Bhadau, Asoj or Ashwin, Mangsir or Marga, Poush or Paush, Falgun or Phagun, Chaitra or Chait — and the converter reads all of them, in Latin or Devanagari letters and digits. Weeks in Nepali calendars start on Sunday (आइतबार); Saturday (शनिबार) is the weekly holiday. Nepal’s fiscal year starts on 1 Shrawan, in mid-July, and is written 2083/84.

Limitations

  • Only 1 Baisakh 2000 to 30 Chaitra 2090 BS (14 April 1943 to 13 April 2034) can be converted: the month lengths of other years are not in the table.
  • Dates in 2084 BS and later come from calendars published in advance and can still move by a day when the official calendar for the year is fixed; for 2087–2090 the advance calendars already differ by a day, so treat those dates as approximate.
  • Published calendars disagree by one day for Jestha 2062 (May–June 2005): this converter starts that month on 14 May 2005, some calendars on 15 May.
  • Lunar dates (tithi), festivals and public holidays are not shown: they come from the panchang and government notices, not from the month table.
  • “Today” is the date in Nepal (UTC+05:45), which can differ from the date on your device if you are in another time zone.

Frequently asked questions

What is today’s Nepali date?

The converter opens on today’s date in Nepal in BS, in English and in Nepali. Sunday 4 October 2026, for example, is 18 Asoj 2083 BS (१८ असोज २०८३, आइतबार). Nepal’s clocks are 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of UTC, so the BS date changes at midnight in Nepal, which can be the previous evening where you are.

How do I convert a BS date to AD?

Choose the BS year, month and day, or type the date (2083-06-18, 18 Asoj 2083 or २०८३ असोज १८), and read the AD date at the top. For example, 1 Baisakh 2083 BS is Tuesday 14 April 2026.

Why do BS months have 29 to 32 days?

Each BS month lasts while the Sun is in one sign of the zodiac. The Sun appears to move more slowly when the Earth is farthest from it, in early July, so the summer months Jestha, Asar and Shrawan (rarely Bhadra) can last 32 days and the winter months from Kartik to Falgun only 29. The lengths change from year to year and are fixed by Nepal’s calendar committee.

How do I calculate my age in BS?

Choose your date of birth under Age in BS. The tool counts whole BS years and months and then the days left, up to today or a date you choose. BS and AD months differ in length, so the months and days can differ by a few days from your age in AD; both are shown, with the total number of days.

Is Nepal’s Bikram Sambat the same as the Vikram Samvat used in India?

They count the same years, but they are different calendars. Nepal’s Bikram Sambat is solar: its months begin at the Sun’s entry into each zodiac sign, and the year starts on 1 Baisakh in mid-April. The Vikram Samvat used in parts of India is lunisolar — its months follow the Moon — so its dates do not match this converter.

Which years can I convert?

From 1 Baisakh 2000 BS (14 April 1943) to 30 Chaitra 2090 BS (13 April 2034). Dates from 2084 BS on follow calendars published in advance, and those from 2087 BS on are marked as approximate.
