About the India PAN & Aadhaar Number Validator for GST & KYC Forms
Before a PAN or an Aadhaar number goes into a GST registration, a payroll sheet, a KYC form or a TDS return, it is worth catching the typos. This validator checks the format offline: a PAN’s 10-character layout and what its 4th character says about the holder (P for an individual, C for a company, F for a firm and so on), and an Aadhaar number’s 12 digits with the Verhoeff check digit that catches any single wrong digit and any two swapped neighbours.
The number is hidden while you type and shown masked in the result (an Aadhaar number as XXXX XXXX 7058, the way UIDAI’s masked Aadhaar shows it), with a button to reveal it. Paste a whole column from a spreadsheet to check hundreds at once and download the report. Nothing is looked up or sent anywhere — so a well-formed number may still not exist: the results link the Income Tax Department’s and UIDAI’s own verification services.
How to use it
- Type or paste a PAN or an Aadhaar number — spaces, hyphens and lower case are fine. The field hides what you type; use Show to see it.
- Read the result: valid format or the exact problem, and what each part of the number means. For a PAN you can add the holder’s surname (or a business’s name) to compare it with the 5th character.
- If you pasted a GSTIN, the tool checks the PAN inside it (characters 3–12) and links the GSTIN validator for the rest.
- For many numbers, switch to A list and paste one row per person — names, PANs and Aadhaar numbers can share a row. Paste the header row too, and only its PAN and Aadhaar columns are checked (not the mobile, UAN or bank-account columns). Filter the problems, copy the valid numbers or download the CSV report (masked unless you choose to show the numbers).
- To confirm that a number exists and whose it is, use the Income Tax e-filing portal’s Verify Your PAN or UIDAI’s Check Aadhaar validity service, linked under the result.

Common uses
- Catch a mistyped PAN before it goes on a TDS return, an invoice or a GST registration.
- Clean an employee or vendor master: paste the PAN and Aadhaar columns, filter the problems, download the report.
- Check a customer’s KYC form without uploading their Aadhaar number anywhere.
- See what kind of holder a PAN belongs to — an individual, a company, a firm or a trust.
How a PAN is built
The Income Tax Department describes the PAN as a ten-character alphanumeric number (PAN tutorial):
- 1–3: an alphabetic series running from AAA to ZZZ.
- 4: the holder’s status — P individual, C company, H Hindu undivided family, A association of persons, B body of individuals, G government agency, J artificial juridical person, L local authority, F firm or limited liability partnership, T trust.
- 5: the first letter of the holder’s surname (individuals) or of the name (everyone else).
- 6–9: a sequence number from 0001 to 9999.
- 10: an alphabetic check digit. How it is calculated is not published, so no offline tool can verify it: a typo in the last letter, or a made-up PAN with a plausible layout, still passes.
How an Aadhaar number is built
UIDAI issues the Aadhaar number as a 12-digit random number that says nothing about the holder. The numbering scheme UIDAI published recommends a Verhoeff check digit as the last digit — it detects every single wrong digit and every swap of two neighbouring digits — and reserves 0 and 1 as first digits, using 2 to 9 for residents’ numbers.
A Virtual ID (VID) is a different, temporary 16-digit number mapped to an Aadhaar number (UIDAI glossary); the validator recognises one but does not check it. Masked Aadhaar replaces the first eight digits with X and shows only the last four (UIDAI) — the form this tool shows by default.
Checking that a number exists
- PAN: the Income Tax e-filing portal’s Verify Your PAN service shows a PAN’s status once you enter it with the holder’s full name and date of birth (and an OTP sent to a mobile number); no login is needed.
- Aadhaar: UIDAI’s Check Aadhaar validity service tells whether a number exists.
- GSTIN: the PAN is inside every regular GSTIN (characters 3–12); the GSTIN validator checks the State code and the GSTIN’s own check character.
Limitations
- Format checks only: a well-formed PAN or Aadhaar number may not exist, may belong to someone else, or may be inactive. Use the official verification services for that.
- The PAN’s check letter cannot be verified offline because its scheme is not published.
- The 5th-character comparison follows the Income Tax Department’s rule (surname for individuals, name for others); names written differently on the card can differ.
- A Virtual ID (VID) and an Aadhaar enrolment ID are not checked.
- Up to 10,000 numbers at a time; the table shows the first 500 and the CSV report has them all.
Privacy
Everything is checked in your browser: the numbers you type or paste are never uploaded, stored or sent to the Income Tax Department or UIDAI. The field hides what you type and results are masked unless you choose to show them — still, avoid using it on a shared screen.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a PAN number is valid?
Check its format first: 5 letters, 4 digits and a letter (like ABCPE1234F), a 4th letter that is one of P, C, H, A, B, G, J, L, F or T, and digits 6–9 between 0001 and 9999. A PAN that passes is well-formed; to confirm it exists and belongs to the right person, use Verify Your PAN on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
What does the 4th character of a PAN mean?
The holder’s status: P individual, C company, H Hindu undivided family, A association of persons, B body of individuals, G government agency, J artificial juridical person, L local authority, F firm or LLP and T trust.
How can I check if an Aadhaar number is genuine?
This tool checks the format: 12 digits, a first digit from 2 to 9 and a matching Verhoeff check digit, which catches nearly every typo. Whether the number was actually issued only UIDAI can tell: use its Check Aadhaar validity service.
What is the Verhoeff algorithm?
A check-digit scheme built on the symmetries of a pentagon (the dihedral group D5). Unlike a simple sum, it catches every single wrong digit and every swap of two neighbouring digits. UIDAI’s numbering scheme recommends it for the 12th digit of the Aadhaar number.
Is it safe to type my Aadhaar number here?
The check runs entirely in your browser: the number is never sent anywhere or stored. You can confirm it by turning off your internet connection after the page has loaded. The field hides the digits and the result is masked unless you reveal it.
Can a PAN start with any letters?
The first three letters are a series from AAA to ZZZ, so any letters can appear there; it is the 4th letter (the holder type) and the 5th (the name initial) that carry meaning.
