Type a force in plain words — “10 kN to kg”, “75 kg to N”, “500 lbf in kN”, “2 t to kN” — or use the boxes below.

1 kN ≈ 101.9716213 kgf

Rounded · kgf = kN ÷ 0.00980665

  • Kilonewton: 1 kN = 1,000 N
  • Kilogram-force (kilopond): the weight of 1 kg under standard gravity = 9.80665 N exactly; also called the kilopond (kp)

Mass and weight

Weight is the force of gravity on a mass: W = m × g. Under standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²) a 1 kg mass weighs 1 kgf = 9.80665 N.

Leave empty for standard gravity, or type your local value.

Type a mass to see its weight.

About the Force Converter (kN to kg)

Convert force between newtons (mN, N, kN, MN), the gravitational units gram-force, kilogram-force (kilopond) and tonne-force, the pound-force family — ounce-force, pound-force, kip and the US and UK ton-forces — and the dyne and poundal. Type in either box and the other updates; the table underneath shows the value in every unit, with exact factors: 1 kgf is exactly 9.80665 N and 1 lbf exactly 4.4482216152605 N.

The common question “how many kg is a kN?” mixes mass and force. Under every result the page shows the mass whose weight that force is — 1 kN is the weight of about 101.97 kg — and Mass and weight turns a mass into its weight in N, kN, kgf and lbf. Both use standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s², unless you type the gravity where you are. Quick convert understands 10 kN to kg and 75 kg to N too.

How to use it

  1. Type a number in From and pick its unit, then pick the unit you want in To — or type 10 kN to kg in Quick convert and press Enter.
  2. Read the result, its formula and the mass it is the weight of; the table shows the same force in every unit.
  3. Under Mass and weight, type a mass to get its weight. Leave Gravity empty for standard gravity, or type a local value in m/s².
  4. Copy the result or a link, download the table as CSV, or convert a list of loads under Convert a list of values.

  • Load cells, force gauges and spring balances in N, kgf, gf, lbf and ozf.
  • Structural and geotechnical loads in kN, MN, kip and ton-force.
  • Physics homework: weight from mass, dynes, poundals and newtons.

Mass, weight and “kN to kg”

A kilogram is a unit of mass; a newton is a unit of force. The 3rd General Conference on Weights and Measures settled the confusion between them: weight is a force — the mass times the acceleration of gravity — and the standard weight of a body is its mass times standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s².

So a 1 kg mass weighs 9.80665 N (one kilogram-force), and a force of 1 kN is the weight of 1,000 ÷ 9.80665 ≈ 101.97 kg. The page shows that mass under every result. Real gravity differs slightly from place to place and with height, so a mass weighs a little more or less than its standard weight; if you know your local g, type it under Mass and weight.

Gravitational units: kgf, tonne-force and pound-force

  • Kilogram-force (kgf, also called the kilopond, kp) = 9.80665 N exactly; the gram-force is a thousandth of it and the tonne-force (tf) a thousand times it, 9.80665 kN. Gauges and load ratings that say “kg” or “tonnes” for a force mean these.
  • Pound-force (lbf) = 0.45359237 kg × 9.80665 m/s² = 4.4482216152605 N exactly; an ounce-force is 1/16 of it, a kip 1,000 of it, the US short ton-force 2,000 and the UK long ton-force 2,240.
  • The poundal (the force that accelerates 1 lb by 1 ft/s²) is 0.138254954376 N, and the CGS dyne 10⁻⁵ N.

Where the factors come from

  • NIST SP 811, Appendix B: kilogram-force (kilopond) = 9.80665 N and dyne = 10⁻⁵ N exactly; pound-force ≈ 4.448222 N, kip ≈ 4,448.222 N, ton-force (2,000 lbf) ≈ 8,896.443 N, ounce-force ≈ 0.2780139 N and poundal ≈ 0.1382550 N.
  • With standard gravity the pound-force is exactly 4.4482216152605 N (NIST SP 811 footnotes), which gives every pound-based factor exactly.
  • Standard gravity, 980.665 cm/s², is the conventional value of the 3rd CGPM.

Limitations

  • Masses for a force use standard gravity unless you type a local value; the page does not estimate gravity for a place.
  • A unit converter only: it does not check whether a load is safe for a lifting device, a fixing or a structure.
  • Weights on the Moon or other planets: use Weight on Other Planets.
  • Results are exact fractions shown to 10 significant digits (marked ≈ when rounded).

Frequently asked questions

How many kg is 1 kN?

A force of 1 kN is the weight of about 101.97 kg under standard gravity: 1,000 N ÷ 9.80665 m/s². In kilogram-force, 1 kN ≈ 101.97 kgf.

How many newtons is 1 kg?

A 1 kg mass weighs 9.80665 N under standard gravity — exactly one kilogram-force. Strictly, kilograms measure mass and newtons force, so this is the weight of the mass.

What is the difference between kg and kgf?

kg is mass, the amount of matter; kgf is force, the weight of 1 kg under standard gravity, 9.80665 N. On Earth the two numbers are almost the same, which is why scales and gauges can be marked in “kg”.

How do I convert lbf to newtons?

Multiply by 4.4482216152605 (exactly): 100 lbf = 444.82216152605 N, about 0.445 kN.

How many kN is a tonne?

A tonne of mass weighs one tonne-force, 9.80665 kN, under standard gravity. A crane rated “10 t” lifts a load whose weight is about 98 kN.

Does my weight in newtons change from place to place?

Slightly, because gravity varies a little over the Earth’s surface and with height; your mass does not change. Type your local gravity under Mass and weight to use it instead of standard gravity.
