About the Webcam Recorder

Record a video of yourself — a video message, a class assignment, a self-introduction for a job application, a product demo — straight from your laptop’s webcam, a USB camera or your phone’s front or back camera, with the sound of your microphone. Choose the camera, resolution and frame rate, mirror the picture, start after a countdown, pause and resume without a gap, and save the result as MP4 (H.264 and AAC, which plays everywhere) or WebM.

The page records in your browser with the WebCodecs video encoder where the browser has one — so it can also mirror the recording and, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, write a long recording straight into a file — and with the browser’s own recorder elsewhere. The video never leaves your device.

How to use it

  1. Press Start camera and allow the camera (and the microphone, unless you untick Record sound). The live picture appears with a level meter for the microphone.
  2. Choose the camera, microphone, resolution, frame rate, format and quality. On a phone, Switch camera changes between the front and back cameras.
  3. Press Record. After the countdown the red REC badge shows the time; Pause and Resume as often as you like, then press Stop.
  4. Watch the recording on the page and press Download MP4 (or WebM). Record again starts a new take; the camera stays on.

Examples

A one-minute video introduction
Input
Laptop webcam · HD 720p · 30 fps · High quality · MP4 · 3-second countdown
Result
webcam-recording-….mp4, 1280 × 720 H.264 with AAC sound, about 22 MB for the minute at the target bit rate (the page shows the estimate for your camera)
A product demo on a phone
Input
Back camera · Full HD 1080p · Clean up speech off
Result
An MP4 of the product, not mirrored, with the room sound kept as it is
A long lecture recording
Input
Chrome on a computer · Save straight to a file
Result
The video is written into the file you chose while you record, so its length is limited by your disk rather than the browser’s memory

Mirrored or not?

Front cameras are shown mirrored, like a mirror and like video calls, because that feels natural while you look at yourself. Recordings are usually kept the right way round, so text on a T-shirt or a whiteboard behind you reads correctly: that is why Mirror the preview and Mirror the recording too are separate. Back cameras are not mirrored.

Resolution, frame rate and file size

The camera delivers its nearest mode to what you ask for; the page shows what it really gives (“1280 × 720 at 30 fps”). Higher resolutions need more light to look sharp, and 60 fps doubles the frames for smooth motion. File size grows with resolution and quality: the estimate under the settings is the target bit rate, and quiet scenes often take less.

Which browsers record what

Chrome, Edge, Safari and desktop Firefox have a WebCodecs video encoder: the page then writes MP4 (H.264 + AAC) or WebM (VP9 + Opus) itself, can mirror the recording, and Chrome and Edge on a computer can save straight to a file. Browsers without one use their built-in recorder (W3C MediaStream Recording): Safari writes MP4, Firefox writes WebM, and the recording cannot be mirrored there.

Limitations

  • Recordings are kept in the browser’s memory until you download them, unless you save straight to a file (Chrome or Edge on a computer). A very long recording in memory can fail on phones; the page warns you when it gets large.
  • Switching between the front and back camera works between recordings, not in the middle of one.
  • Camera and microphone need permission, a secure (https) page and a browser that allows them; in-app browsers inside social and chat apps often block them.
  • Background blur and virtual backgrounds are not offered.

Frequently asked questions

Is this webcam recorder free?

Yes: no sign-up, no watermark and no time limit set by the page. The recording is made on your own device.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The camera picture and the sound go straight into a file in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Why is my recording mirrored (or not)?

The preview of a front camera is mirrored by default because that is how people expect to see themselves. The recording is kept the right way round unless you tick Mirror the recording too.

The page says the camera is in use or blocked. What can I do?

Close video-call apps and other tabs that use the camera, allow the camera for this site in the browser’s address bar, and on a computer check the system privacy settings for the camera. The page shows the exact steps for your browser when it cannot open the camera.

Can I record without sound?

Yes. Untick Record sound from the microphone before starting, or choose No sound in the microphone list.

Which format should I choose?

MP4 plays on every phone, computer and site and is the safe choice. WebM can be smaller at the same quality and plays in browsers and VLC, but some phones and editors do not open it.
