About the Online Teleprompter

Paste your script and read it from a smooth, full-screen teleprompter. You set the speed in words per minute, so the pace stays the same whatever text size you choose; an arrow-marked reading line shows where to read, and the text away from it can be dimmed so your eyes stay in the right place.

Control it from the keyboard, with a presenter remote or a foot pedal (Space or Enter starts and pauses, the arrow keys change the speed, Page Up and Page Down jump back and forward), with the mouse wheel, or by touch. Mirror mode flips the text for teleprompter glass (beam-splitter rigs), and it can be turned upside down too.

Want to film yourself? Turn on your camera: it shows behind the text, and you can record takes with a countdown — your camera and microphone, saved as a video file. The script and settings stay in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your script (or open a text file). Leave a blank line between paragraphs; put notes to yourself in square brackets, such as [pause] — they are shown dimmed and not counted.
  2. Set the speed (words per minute), text size, margins and colours. The preview shows how it will look, and the line under the script says how long it will take.
  3. Press Start prompter. After the countdown the text scrolls; Space pauses, ↑ and ↓ change the speed, Esc closes.
  4. To film yourself, press Turn on camera, then Record with prompter. When you stop, watch the take and press Download.

Reading naturally from a prompter

  • Set the speed in words per minute and adjust it as you go: ↑ and ↓ change it by 5 while you read. The page counts the words of your script and turns that into a scroll speed for the text as it is laid out, so bigger text scrolls faster but you still read the same number of words a minute.
  • Put the reading line near the camera. On a laptop the camera is at the top of the screen, so a reading line at 20–30% keeps your eyes close to the lens.
  • Use notes in brackets — [breathe], [smile], [slide 3] — for things to do, not say.
  • Keep lines short: wider margins make shorter lines that need less eye movement.

Remotes, pedals and keys

Presenter remotes usually send Page Down and Page Up, and often B or . for “blank screen” and F5 for “start the show”; many Bluetooth foot pedals send arrow keys, Page keys or Space. Here Page Down and → jump forward a few lines, Page Up and ← jump back, and Space, Enter, B, . and F5 all start or pause — so most devices work without setup. With the prompter open the keys work anywhere on the page; the full list is under Keyboard, presenter remote and foot pedal.

Teleprompter glass and mirror mode

A beam-splitter teleprompter puts a screen under (or below) a sheet of glass in front of the camera: you read the reflection, and the camera looks straight through the glass at you. The reflection is mirrored, so turn on Mirror left to right; some rigs also need Flip upside down. Choose white or yellow text on black for the brightest, clearest reflection.

Recording with the camera

The camera is opened only when you press Turn on camera, and your browser asks for permission first (W3C Media Capture and Streams). Takes are recorded with the browser’s own recorder (MediaStream Recording) as MP4 where it can, otherwise as WebM, and kept in the page until you download them. The recording holds the camera picture and the microphone — not the script on the screen. The preview is mirrored like a mirror by default; the recording is not.

Limitations

  • The text scrolls at the speed you set; it does not follow your voice.
  • Recordings hold the camera and microphone only, not the text, and are kept in memory until you download them (long takes need memory, especially on phones).
  • On iPhones the browser cannot switch a page to full screen, so the prompter fills the browser window instead.
  • Formatting such as bold or colours in pasted text is not kept: the prompter shows plain text, in one size.

Frequently asked questions

How fast should a teleprompter scroll?

Set the speed to your own speaking pace in words per minute. Read the sample or the first paragraph aloud at a comfortable pace, and nudge the speed with ↑ and ↓ until the text stays at the reading line; the page remembers it.

Can I use a presenter remote or a foot pedal?

Yes. Most presenter remotes send Page Up and Page Down (jump back and forward here) and B, . or F5 (start or pause); most pedals send arrow keys, Page keys or Space. They work as soon as the prompter is open, with no setup.

How do I mirror the text for teleprompter glass?

Tick Mirror left to right before you start, or press M while the prompter is open. If your rig shows the text upside down, tick Flip upside down too.

Can I record myself while reading?

Yes. Press Turn on camera, choose the camera and microphone, then Record with prompter. After the countdown the text scrolls and the recording runs; press Stop recording or Esc to finish, then watch and download the take.

Is my script saved?

Your script and settings are kept in this browser only, so they are still there next time. Clear removes the script; Undo brings it back (also after Try a sample or opening a file) until you type. Nothing is sent to a server.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap the text to start or pause and drag it to move by hand; the buttons at the bottom change the speed and size. A tablet on a stand or under teleprompter glass works well.
