About the Text to SVG Converter

Turn any text into real SVG outlines — the shapes of the letters as paths, so the design looks the same everywhere, needs no font installed and can be cut, engraved or animated. Type your text, choose one of the self-hosted library fonts (Inter, Montserrat, Poppins, Archivo, Noto Sans, Bebas Neue, Anton, Caveat, Dancing Script, Great Vibes and more) or open your own font file (TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2 or a TTC collection), and the letters are set with the font’s own rules: kerning pairs, ligatures such as fi and fl, contextual forms of script fonts, the conjuncts of Devanagari, and any optional OpenType feature you turn on, from small capitals to stylistic sets. Variable fonts get a slider for every axis.

Set the size, letter spacing, line height and alignment, the fill and an outline, or put the text on a circle for badges and stamps. Get one combined path, one path per letter (each with its character), or every letter as its own SVG file in a ZIP; give the SVG a printed width in mm or inches for cutting machines and lasers, export a PNG at 2×, 4× or 300 DPI, or copy the path data for code. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Without a pass you see a watermarked free preview of the outlines and a close-up of their edges; a Pro pass unlocks the files and the path data.

How to use it

  1. Type the text. Each line break starts a new line.
  2. Choose a Family and Weight from the font library, or switch to Your font file and choose a font on your device. For a variable font, move the axis sliders or pick a named style.
  3. Set the font size, letter spacing and line height, the alignment, and turn Kerning, Ligatures or the font’s other features on or off.
  4. Pick the fill colour, or No fill with an outline width for laser cutting. Tick Text on a circle to set the text on the top or the bottom of a circle.
  5. Under Output, choose one combined path or one path per letter, the decimals, a printed width for cutting machines, and the PNG size. With a Pro pass, download the SVG, the PNG or the letters as a ZIP, or copy the SVG or the path data; in the free preview they stay locked.

Examples

A logo word
Input
“Text to SVG”, Montserrat Bold, 120 px
Result
One path 710.64 × 86.88 px, 9 letters, about 3.7 KB of path data (a 3.9 KB SVG file)
What kerning does
Input
“AVATAR”, Inter Regular, 100 px, kerning on and off
Result
368.66 px wide with kerning, 399.32 px without

The A–V, V–A, A–T and T–A pairs move together, as the font’s designer set them.

Ligatures in a script font
Input
“office”, Dancing Script Bold
Result
Five shapes: o, f, fi, c, e

With Ligatures off the f and the i are drawn apart.

A badge
Input
“MYSMARTCOPILOT”, Montserrat Bold 60 px, on the top of a 200 px circle
Result
The word covers 170.6° of the circle, centred at the top

Common uses

  • Logos and wordmarks that must look the same without the font installed.
  • Names and phrases for Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge and other cutters and lasers, with the size set in mm or inches.
  • SVG icons, animated text and path data for web pages, React components or CSS masks.
  • Circular text for badges, stamps, seals and coasters.
  • An alphabet of single-letter SVG files for stencils, signs or letter boards.

How the outlines are made

The text is shaped by fontkit, the font engine that reads OpenType fonts: it applies the font’s kerning (its GPOS table or the older kern table), its ligatures and contextual alternates (GSUB), and fontkit’s shapers for scripts whose letters change shape, such as Devanagari and Arabic. Each glyph’s outline is then placed at its position and written as SVG path data: TrueType fonts draw with quadratic curves (Q), CFF fonts with cubic ones (C). Nothing is traced or approximated: the paths are the font’s own curves, so they stay sharp at any size. For software that reads only cubic curves, Cubic curves only writes each quadratic curve as the identical cubic one.

Fonts and licences

Every font in the library is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, whose FAQ allows using the fonts for any design work — logos, signs, T-shirts, laser-cut or 3D-printed objects — with no extra permission, and you stay the author of what you make. An SVG made here contains only the letter shapes, never a font file. With your own font, check its licence: most allow outlines in a logo or a product, but some commercial licences limit how many products or which uses. The font file you open stays on your device.

For cutting machines and lasers

Give the design a printed width under Output: the SVG then carries its size in mm or inches in its width and height, so programs that read SVG units open it at that size instead of converting pixels at a density of their own. Many laser programs cut along outlines and engrave fills, so for cutting choose No fill and a thin outline; for vinyl and print keep the fill. Script fonts draw each letter as its own shape, and joined letters overlap: weld them in your machine’s software, or use the Cut File Maker, which welds them into one outline and adds offsets. One path per letter keeps each letter separate for spacing by hand, and Letters (ZIP) gives every letter as its own file.

Text on a circle

Each letter keeps its shape and is turned about the centre of the circle so that its baseline touches it. Text on the top reads clockwise outside the circle; text on the bottom reads upright inside it, so the same radius gives a ring with the words facing out. For a classic badge, set the top text on one radius and the bottom text on a radius larger by about the height of its capitals, so both sit in the same band. Spread spaces the letters evenly around the whole circle, and the page warns when the text is longer than the circle.

OpenType features

Under More OpenType features the page lists the optional features the chosen font really has, with their names from the OpenType feature registry: small capitals, oldstyle or tabular figures, fractions, discretionary ligatures, swashes and the font’s stylistic sets and character variants. They change which shapes are drawn, so the SVG keeps them without any CSS.

Limitations

  • Each line is shaped as one run in one direction: a line that mixes right-to-left and left-to-right text (Arabic or Hebrew with Latin words) may come out in the wrong order; set such text one direction per line.
  • Library fonts cover Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Vietnamese and Devanagari. For other scripts open a font file that has them; complex scripts are shaped by fontkit’s own shapers and are worth a careful look.
  • Overlapping parts of letters (script fonts, many variable fonts) stay separate shapes: they fill correctly, but a cutter follows every line unless you weld them.
  • Colour fonts are not drawn in colour: only plain outlines can be converted, and emoji or other bitmap glyphs have none.
  • Text is limited to 5,000 characters and 200 lines at a time; the PNG to 8,192 pixels on its longest side.
  • In the free preview the outlines are shown at preview size with a watermark and a 4× close-up; the SVG, PNG, ZIP and path data unlock with a pass.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot. The font engine (about 330 KB) and each library font file your text needs (about 20–45 KB) are downloaded from this site the first time they are used. Your text and your own font files stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Text to SVG Converter shows the outlined text at preview size (up to 640 pixels) and a 4× close-up of its edges, watermarked; the SVG, PNG and path data stay locked. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How do I convert text to an SVG path?

Type the text, choose a font and read the outlines on the right. The SVG contains the letters as <path> elements, so it needs no font: with a Pro pass download it, or copy the path data (d) to use in code.

Can I use my own font?

Yes. Choose Your font file and open a TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2 or TTC file. It is read in your browser and never uploaded. Variable fonts show a slider for each axis.

Does it keep kerning and ligatures?

Yes, as the font defines them. Kerning and standard ligatures are on by default and can be turned off; other features of the font, such as stylistic sets, can be turned on.

Will the SVG work in Cricut Design Space or a laser cutter?

Yes: it is a plain SVG of paths. Set a printed width in mm or inches so it opens at the right size, use one combined path for a single cut or one path per letter to move letters apart, and weld overlapping script letters before cutting.

Can I curve text around a circle?

Tick Text on a circle, then set the radius, the top or bottom of the circle and the rotation. The letters keep their exact shapes.

Am I allowed to use the library fonts in a logo I sell?

The library fonts are under the SIL Open Font License, whose FAQ says the fonts may be used for any kind of design work, logos and products included, without further permission. The licence’s conditions apply to the font files themselves, which the SVG does not contain.
