About the Kaomoji & Text Faces (Lenny Face, Shrug, Table Flip)
Kaomoji are faces made of text characters — the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, the Lenny face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), the table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ and hundreds more. This collection has 278 of them in 17 moods, from happy and love to angry, sleepy, animals and classic emoticons. Tap one and it is copied, ready to paste into a chat, a caption, a bio or a comment.
Some faces borrow letters from other writing systems — the eyes of ಠ_ಠ are a Kannada letter, the arms of ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ come from Canadian Aboriginal syllabics — and fonts on some devices do not include them, so the face shows empty boxes. Those faces are marked with !, and the selected face shows exactly which characters are affected. You can also make your own face from arms, an outline, cheeks, eyes and a mouth, and copy a version for Discord and Reddit that keeps backslashes and underscores intact.
How to use it
- Search by name or feeling — shrug, flip, cat, cry — or pick a mood. Paste a face into the search box to find its name.
- Tap a face to copy it, then paste it where you want it. The Selected face panel shows how many characters it uses and how X counts it.
- A ! means the face uses characters some fonts lack; read the note to see which ones, and check the face on the device your audience uses.
- For Discord or Reddit, press Copy for Discord & Reddit when it appears: it adds the backslashes those apps need to show \ * _ ~ and ^ as typed.
- To make your own, choose parts under Make your own (or press Random) and press Copy my face. Faces you copy are kept under Recent in this browser.
Examples
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ — shows as ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pasted as it is, Discord reads \_ as an escaped underscore and the shrug loses an arm: ¯_(ツ)_/¯.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Degree signs for eyes, U+0361 COMBINING DOUBLE INVERTED BREVE as eyebrows, U+035C COMBINING DOUBLE BREVE BELOW and ʖ (U+0296) for the nose and mouth
The eyebrows are combining marks drawn on the character before them, which is why the face looks slightly different in each font.

Common uses
- Adding a shrug, a smile or a table flip to a chat message or comment.
- Cute text faces for bios, captions and usernames’ display names.
- Discord and Reddit messages where the face must survive Markdown.
- Making a signature face of your own for your posts.
Why some faces show as empty boxes
A face is only text, so every character in it has to be in a font on the reader’s device. Japanese characters such as ツ and box-drawing lines such as ┻━┻ are in the fonts of almost every phone and computer, but many kaomoji borrow characters from writing systems that fewer fonts cover — Kannada (ಠ), Canadian Aboriginal syllabics (ᕦ ᕤ), Tibetan (༼ ༽), Thai (ง), Georgian (ლ), Arabic (و) — or phonetic letters such as ʖ and ᴥ. When the font is missing, the reader sees □ or a question mark.
Combining marks, such as the Lenny face’s eyebrows, cause a different problem: they are drawn on top of the character before them, and each font places them a little differently.
The ! mark is based on which characters a face uses, not on your own device. To be sure, look at the face on the phone or app your audience uses.
Kaomoji in Discord, Reddit and other Markdown apps
Discord and Reddit use Markdown: *text* and _text_ turn italic (Discord’s “Markdown Text 101” help article), and a backslash before a character makes it plain text (Reddit’s Formatting Guide calls this escaping) — so the backslash itself disappears. That is how ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ turns into ¯_(ツ)_/¯, and why faces with two * or _ can turn part of a message italic. Reddit also turns the text after a caret into superscript (its guide: “a single word can also be superscripted by preceding it with just a caret”), so (^_^) loses its eyes there. Copy for Discord & Reddit puts a backslash in front of each \ * _ ~ ` | and ^ so they show up as typed. Use the plain copy everywhere else — in Instagram, X or WhatsApp the extra backslashes would show.
Kaomoji and screen readers
Screen readers announce the symbols in a face one by one, or skip them, so a long face can be a mouthful for people who listen to their feed — and it rarely sounds like a face. Use kaomoji as decoration rather than in place of words, and put them at the end of a sentence. The Social Post Accessibility Checker shows how a whole post may be read out.
Limitations
- How a face looks depends on the reader’s fonts; the same face can look different on Android, iPhone and Windows.
- The ! mark is worked out from the characters in a face, not by testing your device.
- Names are descriptions written for this collection; many faces are known by several names.
- Some apps change or strip unusual characters, and username fields usually reject kaomoji altogether.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯?
Search for shrug and tap it to copy, then paste. It is made of a macron (¯), a backslash, an underscore, brackets around the Japanese character ツ (tsu), another underscore, a slash and a second macron. In Discord or Reddit use Copy for Discord & Reddit, or the arm disappears.
What is the Lenny face?
The Lenny face, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), is a sly or suggestive grin. Its eyes are degree signs under a combining double inverted breve (U+0361), and its nose and mouth are the phonetic letter ʖ with a combining double breve below (U+035C). Variations include the winking Lenny ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) and the Lenny shrug ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯ — search lenny to see them all.
Why do I see boxes instead of some faces?
Your device has no font for one of the characters, often a letter borrowed from Kannada, Canadian Aboriginal syllabics, Tibetan or Thai. Faces like that are marked with !. People reading your post may see the same boxes, so pick a face without the mark if it matters.
Do kaomoji count as more characters on X?
Often, yes. X counts Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters — such as ツ — as 2, so the shrug, 9 characters long, counts as 10 of the 280. The Selected face panel shows the X count for every face.
Can I make my own kaomoji?
Yes. Under Make your own, choose arms, an outline, cheeks, eyes, a mouth and an extra such as a heart or a table flip, or press Random. The preview shows the face, flags characters some fonts lack, and Copy my face copies it.
Are the faces I copy saved anywhere?
Only in this browser: the last 16 faces you copied appear under Recent. Nothing is uploaded.
