About the Discord Text & Colored Text Formatter
Discord formats messages with its own Markdown: **bold**, *italics*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~ and ||spoilers||, headers and subtext at the start of a line, lists, quotes, masked links and code blocks. This formatter types the symbols for you: select text, press a button, and the preview shows roughly how Discord will display the message, with the 2,000-character limit (4,000 with Nitro) counted as you type.
For coloured text, the ANSI builder writes a code block marked ansi: pick a text colour, a background, bold or underline for any part of your text, then copy the block or insert it into your message. Paste an existing coloured block to edit it, or copy it as a string for bot code.
How to use it
- Type or paste your message, select words and press Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Spoiler or Inline code (Ctrl or ⌘ with B, I or U works too). Press the button again to remove the style.
- Put the cursor on a line, or select several, and press H1, H2, H3, Subtext, Quote or a list button. Quote the rest adds
>>>, which quotes everything after it. - Press Link for a masked link, or pick a language and press Code block. Escape adds backslashes so symbols show as typed; Clear style removes the formatting from the selection.
- Check the preview in Discord’s dark or light theme and the character count, then press Copy message and paste it into Discord.
- For coloured text, type it under Coloured text (ANSI), select a part and pick a colour, then Copy coloured block or Insert into message.

␛ stands for the invisible escape character (U+001B). The copy buttons include the real character, so paste the block as it is.
Common uses
- Announcements and event posts with a header, a short subtext line and a list.
- Rules channels, FAQs and guides that need quotes, numbered steps and masked links.
- Hiding plot twists, answers or prizes behind spoilers.
- Sharing code with the right language name for syntax highlighting.
- Status messages, scoreboards and bot output in colour.
Discord formatting cheat sheet
From Discord’s Markdown Text 101:
*italics*or_italics_,**bold**,***bold italics***,__underline__,~~strikethrough~~; they combine, as in__**underline bold**__.||spoiler||hides text until it is clicked. A code block cancels it.# Header,## Header,### Header: three sizes, as the first characters of a line and with a space after the#.-# subtext: small, grey text, also at the very start of a line.[text](https://example.com): a masked link, which shows the text instead of the address.- itemor* itemfor bullets, two spaces before the dash to nest one, and1. itemfor numbers.- One backtick on each side of a word makes inline code; three backticks on the line before and the line after make a code block. A language name right after the opening three backticks, such as
jsorpy, picks the syntax highlighting. > quotefor one line,>>> quotefor everything that follows.
A backslash before a symbol shows the symbol instead of formatting: \*not italic\*. The Escape button adds those backslashes for you.
How coloured text works
Discord colours text inside a code block whose language is ansi, using the escape sequences terminals use, defined in ECMA-48: the invisible escape character, [, codes separated by ;, and m. The builder writes these codes:
0back to normal,1bold,4underline;30to37: black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan and white text;40to47: the same eight colours as backgrounds.
Discord’s help centre does not document ANSI blocks, so how they look is up to its apps: they are widely reported to show colours on desktop and in the browser and plain text in the mobile apps, and Discord picks its own shade of each colour for each theme. The preview uses typical terminal colours, so treat its shades as approximate.
Message length
A Discord message can have up to 2,000 characters, or 4,000 with Nitro; a longer message is sent as a text file instead (Discord Support). The formatting symbols count too, and so do the escape codes and the two fence lines of a coloured block, which is why the builder shows how many characters a block uses.
Limitations
- The preview is an approximation: Discord’s fonts, spacing and colours differ a little between its desktop, browser and mobile apps and its themes.
- Code blocks are previewed without syntax colours, except ANSI.
- Only the eight standard colours, bold and underline are offered. Pasted blocks with 256-colour or true-colour codes keep their text, but those codes are dropped.
- Mentions, custom emoji and other Discord features that depend on your server show as plain text in the preview.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make coloured text in Discord?
Type the text under Coloured text (ANSI), select a part and pick a colour, then press Copy coloured block and paste it into Discord. The block starts with three backticks and the word ansi and contains invisible escape characters, so copy it with the button rather than retyping it.
Why is my coloured text plain on my phone?
Discord does not document ANSI colours, and its mobile apps are widely reported to show such blocks as plain code. On desktop and in a browser the same message shows in colour.
How do I make a header or small text in Discord?
Start the line with # , ## or ### for a header, or -# for small grey subtext, with a space after the symbols. The H1, H2, H3 and Subtext buttons add them to every selected line.
How do I mark a spoiler?
Put two vertical bars on each side, ||like this||, or select the words and press Spoiler. Spoilers do not work inside code blocks.
How long can a Discord message be?
2,000 characters, or 4,000 with Nitro. The counter under the editor counts characters as you see them, including the formatting symbols.
Is my message sent anywhere?
No. Formatting, the preview and the colours are all made in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored. The page also works offline once it has loaded.
