About the UPI QR Code Generator

Turn your UPI ID into a QR code that any UPI app can scan to pay you. Enter the UPI ID and the payee name, and if you like a fixed amount, a note and a reference — for example an invoice number. You get the code, the matching upi://pay link to share in a message, and three downloads: a PNG for WhatsApp or a website, an SVG for printing at any size, and a print-ready shop standee PDF in A4, A5 or A6 with your name, UPI ID and amount.

The UPI ID is checked for the usual mistakes before the code is made, and the link follows the deep-link format NPCI describes. Everything is generated in your browser: your UPI ID, name and amounts are not sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type your UPI ID (for example 9876543210@ybl — it is under your profile in your UPI app) and the payee name your bank account is in.
  2. Leave the amount empty for a code customers can reuse — they type what they owe — or enter an amount for a one-off payment, such as an invoice.
  3. Add a note (it shows in the payer’s app) and, for a one-off request, a reference such as an invoice number.
  4. Download the PNG, SVG or standee PDF, or copy the payment link. Test it once by paying a small amount from another phone before you print it.

Common uses

  • A QR standee for a shop counter, stall, taxi or clinic.
  • A payment QR on an invoice, a quotation or a fee notice.
  • A pay link to send on WhatsApp or by email.
  • A QR for collecting a fixed amount — a society fee, an event ticket, a class fee.

What goes into the code

The code holds a UPI deep link: upi://pay? followed by parameters. NPCI’s circular OC No. 18/2016-17 lists the key ones: pa, the payee’s UPI ID, and pn, the payee name, are mandatory; am is the amount; tr is the transaction reference, “upto 35 digits” (NPCI OC 18). This tool also adds cu=INR and, if you give one, tn, the note — Google Pay for India’s documentation gives it a maximum of 80 characters (Google Pay for India). Text is percent-encoded, so a space is written %20.

Fixed amount or open amount

Without an amount, the payer types it in — the right choice for a code you print once and use for every customer. With an amount, the circular says the amount is not editable unless a minimum amount is also given, so use a fixed amount only for one payment, such as an invoice or a fee. For a printed, reusable code, also leave the reference empty: the circular says that for a static QR code the payer’s app fills in the reference itself.

Printing and testing

  • Keep the white border around the code (the quiet zone) — the downloads include it.
  • Print the standee at 100% scale; the code is drawn as vector shapes, so it stays sharp. Laminate it if it is used outdoors.
  • Before printing many copies, pay a small amount to yourself from a different phone and check that the right name appears.
  • Payers should always check the name their UPI app shows before they pay. A QR code is only a link: anyone can print one with any UPI ID, so look at your standee now and then to make sure it has not been covered by someone else’s.

What this tool is not

It writes your UPI ID into a QR code; payments go from the payer’s UPI app straight to the bank account linked to your UPI ID, and you see them in your own UPI or bank app. There is no merchant dashboard, payment confirmation for your website, settlement report or sound box — for those, ask your bank or a payment aggregator for a merchant QR.

Limitations

  • The UPI ID is checked for format only — the tool cannot confirm that it exists or whose it is. Test with a small payment first.
  • Whether a payer’s app accepts a pre-filled amount, note or reference for a personal UPI ID is up to that app and bank; banks and apps also set their own transaction limits.
  • The standee PDF uses Latin script; names in other scripts (for example Devanagari) print as “?” — use the PNG or SVG for those.
  • No logo is placed on the code, and no merchant category code (mc) is added.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a QR code for my UPI ID?

Type your UPI ID and your name, leave the amount empty, and download the PNG or the standee PDF. Customers scan it with any UPI app and type the amount they are paying.

Can I put a fixed amount in the QR code?

Yes — enter it under Amount. The payer’s app then shows that amount; per NPCI’s circular it cannot be edited unless a minimum amount is set. Use a fixed amount for one payment, not for a code you print and reuse.

What is the upi://pay link for?

It is the same payment request as the QR code, as a link. Opened on a phone with a UPI app — from WhatsApp, SMS or a web page — it starts the payment in that app. On a computer it does nothing, so share the QR code there.

Is it safe? Does the tool see my UPI ID?

The code is made in your browser and your details are not uploaded. A UPI QR code can only ask for money to be sent to the UPI ID in it; the payer still has to confirm the payment in their own app.

Which apps can scan it?

The code uses the standard upi://pay format, which UPI apps read when they scan a payment QR. Test it with the apps your customers use before you print many copies.
