About the Retirement Date Calculator

Enter a date of birth and a retirement age to get the date of retirement (superannuation), how old you will be that day, and how much service is left — in years, months and days. Add the date you joined to see the total length of service at retirement.

Choose the rule your employer uses. The Government of India rule (FR 56) retires an employee on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which the age is reached — or of the previous month for someone born on the 1st. The exact-birthday rule retires on the birthday itself. This is a generic rule calculator: confirm the date with your service book, your office or HR.

How to use it

  1. Enter the date of birth as recorded in your service book or certificates.
  2. Choose the retirement age — 58, 60, 62 or 65 — or type another whole number of years.
  3. Choose the rule: Government of India (FR 56) or on the birthday. For a birthday on 29 February, choose whether it falls on 28 February or 1 March in other years.
  4. Optionally enter the date of joining to see the total length of service, and change Time left as on to count from a date other than today. Copy copies a summary.

Common uses

  • Government employees checking their superannuation date and the service left.
  • HR and payroll teams confirming retirement dates for an employee.
  • Planning pension, gratuity, provident-fund withdrawals and other finances around the retirement date.
  • Comparing retirement at 58, 60, 62 and 65.

The FR 56 rule (Government of India)

Fundamental Rule 56(a) says that, except as otherwise provided, every Government servant “shall retire from service on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which he attains the age of sixty years”. Its proviso adds that a Government servant “whose date of birth is the first of a month shall retire from service on the afternoon of the last day of the preceding month on attaining the age of sixty years”.

  • Born on the 2nd to the 31st: the last day of the birth month in the year the age is reached. Born 15 March 1966 → 31 March 2026.
  • Born on the 1st: the last day of the previous month. Born 1 July 1966 → 30 June 2026.

The calculator applies the same rule to any age you choose. Wording of FR 56(a) as quoted by the Delhi High Court in Union of India v. G.C. Yadav.

Why someone born on the 1st retires a month earlier

The proviso treats the age as attained on the day before the birthday. In Union of India v. G.C. Yadav the Delhi High Court held that an employee born on 1 January 1956 attained 60 on 31 December 2015, retired on the afternoon of that day and was not in service on 1 January 2016. The month in which he reached the age was December 2015, not January 2016.

Because of this, the calendar age shown for the retirement day is one day short of the full age for anyone born on the 1st.

How the time left and the service are counted

  • Time left counts whole years, months and days from the “as on” date to the retirement date, plus the total number of days. The retirement day itself still counts as a day of service.
  • Service runs from the joining day to the retirement day with both days included, so joining on 1 July 1990 and retiring on 30 June 2026 is exactly 36 years.
  • Months are calendar months: a month is complete when the same day number comes round again, or the last day of a shorter month.

Limitations

  • This is a generic rule calculator, not legal advice and not an official service record. Your service rules may differ — for example for teachers, doctors, judges or members of the armed forces, or for state and public-sector employees.
  • It does not cover extensions of service, re-employment, voluntary or premature retirement (such as FR 56(j)), or retirement on medical grounds.
  • Service length here is simple calendar time. Rules for qualifying service for a pension (leave without pay, breaks, rounding to half-years) are not applied.

Frequently asked questions

What is the retirement date of a Central Government employee born on the 1st of a month?

Under FR 56 it is the afternoon of the last day of the previous month in the year the retirement age is reached. Born 1 July 1966 with a retirement age of 60 → 30 June 2026.

Do I retire in the morning or the afternoon?

FR 56 says “on the afternoon of the last day of the month”, so the retirement date is your last working day. Under the exact-birthday rule, check with your employer whether the birthday is the last working day or the first day of retirement.

Which retirement age should I choose?

The one in your service rules or employment contract. FR 56(a) sets sixty years as the general rule for Central Government servants; state governments, public-sector companies and private employers set their own ages, commonly between 58 and 65.

How is the remaining service calculated?

As whole years, months and days from today (or the “as on” date you choose) to the retirement date, with the total in days. After the retirement date has passed, the tool shows how long ago it was.

Is my date of birth saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser; the dates are not uploaded or stored.
