About the Add Prefix, Suffix & Line Numbers
Paste a list and change every line at once: put text before each line (a quote, a bullet, <li>, // ), after each line (a closing quote, </li>, a semicolon), or between lines — a comma after every line but the last, which is exactly what an SQL IN (…) list or a JSON array needs.
The same page numbers lines as 1. 2. 3., 01) 02), a) b), i. ii. or I. II., from any start and with any step (count down with a negative step), and cleans up a list first: it removes old bullets and numbering, a given text at the start or end of each line, or the indentation. Blank lines can be left alone so paragraphs keep their gaps, and a Windows (CRLF) file keeps its line endings.
How to use it
- Paste your lines into the box, or use Open file (or drop a file onto the box). Nothing is uploaded.
- Type a Prefix, Suffix or Between lines text — or pick one of the Presets, such as Quoted, with commas (SQL IN list).
- To number the lines, choose a Numbering format and its punctuation, then set Start at and Step.
- Under Clean up & indent, tick Remove bullets or Remove numbering to replace an old list marker, or change the indentation.
- The result updates as you type. Copy it or Download it as a text file.
Examples
IN-1001 IN-1002 IN-1003
'IN-1001', 'IN-1002', 'IN-1003'
Prefix ', suffix ', between lines , — the last line gets no comma.

Common uses
- Turning a column copied from Excel into an SQL
IN (…)list, a JSON array or a quoted CSV row. - Adding bullets, checkboxes (
- [ ]) or<li>tags to a plain list for a document, Markdown or HTML. - Numbering steps, questions or verses — or renumbering a list after reordering it.
- Commenting out a block of code (
//or#), or removing the indentation a pasted code sample brought with it.
The order things happen in
Each line goes through three steps:
- Clean up — the Remove from start and Remove from end texts are taken off (exact, case-sensitive matches), then old bullets and numbering.
- Indent — Add, Remove (up to the given number of spaces or tabs), Remove all leading spaces, or Remove shared indent, which takes away only the indentation every line has in common, so nested lines keep their relative indent.
- Add — the number and the prefix go at the start of the line (or after its indentation, if you tick Insert after the indentation), the suffix at the end, and the Between lines text after every line except the last.
With Leave blank lines unchanged on (the default), empty lines are skipped entirely: they get no prefix, suffix or number, so paragraphs keep their gaps and the numbering runs on without gaps.
Which markers "Remove bullets" and "Remove numbering" recognise
- Bullets:
•-*+–—·▪◦‣●■►✓and similar, when a space follows — so-5 °Cand--verboseare left alone. A Markdown checkbox (- [ ],- [x]) is removed with its bullet. - Numbering:
1.1)(1)[1]1:1 -#1, letters such asa)B.(c), Roman numerals such asiv.XII), and outline numbers such as1.2.3or2.1.— each followed by a space. Letters and Roman numerals need their punctuation, so a line that starts with “I like” or “A cat” is never changed, and1.5 kgstays a quantity.
Tabs and line breaks in the prefix or suffix
A text box cannot hold a tab you type, so tick Read \t as a tab and \n as a line break and write \t or \n instead (\\ gives one backslash). A suffix of \n adds an empty line after every line — handy for double-spacing a list.
Limitations
- Matches for Remove from start and Remove from end are exact and case-sensitive; use Find and Replace for patterns.
- Roman numerals go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX), the largest number the standard notation can write.
- Letters continue like spreadsheet columns after z: aa, ab … az, ba.
- Very large results (over about 3 million characters) are previewed in part; Copy and Download always include everything.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add a comma to the end of every line except the last one?
Type , into Between lines (or choose the preset Comma after each line but the last). To have a comma on every line, put it in Suffix instead.
How do I put quotes around each line?
Choose the preset Wrap in "double quotes", or type " as both prefix and suffix. For a JSON array or an SQL list, use the presets that also add commas between the lines.
Can I number only the lines that have text?
Yes — that is the default. With Leave blank lines unchanged on, empty lines get no number and the count continues on the next line with text. Untick it to number every line, empty or not.
How do I start numbering from 0, 100 or count down?
Set Start at to the first number and Step to the difference between numbers: Start 100, Step 10 gives 100, 110, 120; Start 10, Step −1 counts down 10, 9, 8.
Will my line endings change?
No. A file with Windows (CRLF) line endings keeps them in the copied and downloaded result, and a missing or present final line break stays as it was. Text typed into the box uses the browser’s standard line breaks (LF).
Is my text uploaded?
No. All the changes are made in your browser; nothing you paste or open is sent anywhere.
