About the Venn Diagram Maker

Draw Venn diagrams for 2, 3 or 4 sets in two ways. Paste lists — names, email addresses, product codes, one per line — and the tool finds every intersection: which items are in A only, in A and B only, in all sets, and so on, with the members of each region listed and ready to download. Or type the numbers you already have: the size of each set and of its overlaps.

For 2 or 3 sets the diagram can be area-proportional (circle areas follow your numbers — exactly for two sets, as closely as circles allow for three, with the remaining error reported) or classic (equal circles, every region shown). Four sets use four ellipses, the classic layout in which all 15 regions exist. Edit the set names and colours, then download PNG or SVG. The lists never leave your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose Paste lists or Type sizes, and the number of sets (2, 3 or 4).
  2. Name each set. For lists, paste one item per line into each box (or choose to split at commas too); repeated items count once, and matching ignores upper/lower case unless you untick it.
  3. For sizes, type each set’s size and the overlaps — either as totals (“in both A and B”, which includes items in all three) or as the count of each region on its own.
  4. Pick the layout (area-proportional or classic) and what the regions show: counts, percentages, or the items themselves.
  5. Check the table of regions, copy or download it as CSV, and download the diagram as PNG or SVG.

Examples

Two lists
Input
Python: Asha, Ravi, Meera, Kabir, Zara, Ishaan
SQL: Ravi, Kabir, Anaya, Vihaan, Zara, Arjun, Diya
Result
Python only: Asha, Meera, Ishaan (3) · Both: Ravi, Kabir, Zara (3) · SQL only: Anaya, Vihaan, Arjun, Diya (4) · 10 people in all
Sizes as totals (inclusion–exclusion)
Input
A = 520, B = 410, C = 280, A∩B = 190, A∩C = 120, B∩C = 90, A∩B∩C = 50
Result
A only 260 · B only 180 · C only 120 · A and B only 140 · A and C only 70 · B and C only 40 · all three 50 · union 860

A only = A − A∩B − A∩C + A∩B∩C = 520 − 190 − 120 + 50 = 260.

Numbers that cannot be right
Input
A = 25, B = 40, A∩B = 30
Result
“A and B” (30) is larger than “A” (25), which contains it.

The tool checks that no overlap is larger than a set it belongs to and that no region would be negative.

Common uses

  • Comparing two or three lists: customers who bought both products, students in several clubs, overlapping mailing lists.
  • Showing survey results such as “which of these apps do you use?”.
  • Teaching sets, unions and intersections with real numbers.
  • Finding the items that appear in every list, or in exactly one.

Totals or regions?

Numbers for overlaps can mean two things. As totals, “A and B” counts everyone in both A and B — including those also in C — the way most survey tables report it. As region counts, each number is one region on its own (“A and B only”, not C). With totals, the region counts come from inclusion–exclusion: for each region you add and subtract the totals of the overlaps that contain it, e.g. A only = |A| − |A∩B| − |A∩C| + |A∩B∩C|. If the numbers contradict each other (an overlap larger than a set, or a negative region), you get a message saying which numbers to check.

Area-proportional diagrams and their limits

In an area-proportional (Euler) diagram each circle’s area equals its set’s size. Two circles can always match both sizes and their overlap exactly: the distance between the centres is found so that the lens-shaped overlap has the right area. Three circles generally cannot match all seven regions — Wilkinson (“Exact and approximate area-proportional circular Venn and Euler diagrams”, IEEE TVCG 18(2)) shows why — so the circles are first placed with the venn.js layout algorithm and then moved to make the squared error over all seven regions as small as possible. The notes give how much of the drawn area ends up in the wrong region, and the table shows each region’s number next to its drawn share. Four circles cannot show all 15 regions of four sets, so four sets use the classic four-ellipse layout, which shows every region but does not size them by count.

How lists are matched

Each line (or comma-separated part) is one item; spaces at the ends are trimmed and empty lines ignored. With Ignore upper/lower case on, “Asha” and “asha” are the same item (the first spelling is kept). An item repeated inside one list counts once. The CSV download has one row per item with yes/no for every set and its region, so you can sort or filter it in a spreadsheet.

Limitations

  • 2 to 4 sets; for five or more, an UpSet-style chart or a table works better than a Venn diagram.
  • Up to 50,000 items per list.
  • Region labels that do not fit inside a small region are left out of the drawing (hover or tap it, or read the table).
  • Items are matched exactly (apart from case and surrounding spaces): “Mumbai” and “Mumbai.” are different items.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the common items in two lists?

Choose Paste lists and 2 sets, paste one list in each box, and read the region “A and B”: those items are in both. The table and CSV list every region’s items.

How do I make a Venn diagram with numbers?

Choose Type sizes, then type each set’s size and the overlaps. Pick Totals if “A and B” includes those also in C (the usual survey table), or Each region on its own if your numbers are already split.

What is the difference between a Venn and an Euler diagram?

A Venn diagram shows every possible overlap, even empty ones; an Euler diagram shows only the ones that exist and may size them by count. The classic layout here is a Venn diagram; the area-proportional layout is an Euler diagram, and sets that do not overlap are drawn apart.

Why do the circle areas not match my numbers exactly?

With three sets, circles can rarely match all seven regions at once. The layout gets as close as it can and the notes say how far off it is. Your numbers are always shown exactly in the labels and the table.

Can I show the names of the items in the diagram?

Yes, in Paste lists mode choose Items under Regions show. Regions show as many items as fit, then “+N more”; the full lists are in the table.

Are my lists uploaded?

No. Matching, counting and drawing happen in your browser. A share link carries the lists inside the link after the “#”, which is never sent to a server — keep that in mind before sharing a link to private lists.
