About the Pivot Table Generator
Open a CSV or Excel file — or paste cells from a spreadsheet — and build a pivot table in your browser: put fields in Rows and Columns, and add Values summed, counted, averaged or more. Group dates by day, week, month, quarter, year or financial year (starting in any month: April for India’s financial year), filter out what you do not need, and read subtotals and grand totals. Click any number to see the rows behind it.
Every total is worked out from the rows themselves, so the grand total of a median or an average is right, not an average of averages. Show values as a share of the row, the column or the grand total, chart the result as grouped or stacked bars, and with a pass download it as Excel, CSV or TSV (without one the page shows a free preview). The file never leaves your device.
How to use it
- Open a CSV, TSV, Excel (XLSX, XLS), OpenDocument or Numbers file under Your data, or paste cells copied from a spreadsheet. A first pivot is suggested from your columns.
- Under Fields, press Rows, Columns, Values or Filter beside a field (or drag it into a box) to place it. Press a highlighted button again to take the field out; Clear the layout empties every box and Suggest a layout starts again from a first pivot of your columns.
- For each value, choose how it is summarised (sum, count, distinct count, average, median, minimum, maximum or a list of values) and whether to show it as a value or a percentage.
- For a date field, choose how to group it; for a financial year, choose the month it starts in. Use filters to leave out values, and the options for subtotals, grand totals and sorting.
- Click a number to see its source rows. Download the pivot table as Excel, CSV or TSV, copy it, or download the chart — with a Pro pass, or after unlocking this result; without one the page shows a free preview.
Examples
Rows: Region · Columns: Product · Values: Sum of Sales
One row per region, one column per product, a grand total of each and of all
Rows: Date grouped by Financial year (starts in April) · Values: Sum of Sales
FY 2025-26 covers 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, FY 2026-27 the next twelve months
Rows: Region · Values: Sum of Sales shown as % of the grand total
Each region’s share, adding up to 100 %
Common uses
- Totalling sales, expenses or hours by category, person, region or month.
- Financial-year and quarterly summaries for accounts and reports.
- Counting survey answers or orders by two attributes at once (a cross-tab).
- Finding the rows behind a surprising total, by clicking it.
- Summarising a CSV export when Excel or Google Sheets is not at hand.
The summaries
- Sum, Average, Median, Minimum and Maximum use the cells that are numbers (written with digit grouping, currency signs, percent signs or brackets for negatives, as spreadsheets show them). Minimum and maximum of a date field give the earliest and latest date.
- Count counts filled cells (like a spreadsheet’s Count of a text field); Count of numbers only the cells that are numbers; Distinct count the different values; List of values writes the different values (up to 100) separated by commas.
- With no value field, the table counts rows.
Subtotals and grand totals are worked out from the rows they cover, the way a pivot table does: the total of an average is the average of all its rows.
Grouping dates and the financial year
Dates are read whether they are written 2026-10-09, 09/10/2026, 10/09/2026 (the order is taken from the data or chosen under the options) or 9 Oct 2026. Group them by week (ISO 8601 weeks from Monday, such as 2026-W41, or weeks from Sunday), month, quarter, year, financial year or financial-year quarter.
A financial year is labelled by the years it spans: with an April start, each one runs from 1 April to 31 March and is named like FY 2026-27, and its first quarter is April to June. In India the financial year begins on 1 April (financial year in section 3(21) of the General Clauses Act, 1897); choose another start month for other years, such as July or October.
Percentages, sorting and limits
% of the row total divides each cell by its row’s grand total, % of the column total by its column’s, and % of the grand total by the total of everything. Rows are sorted by their labels (numbers by value, dates in time order, blanks last) or by the first value’s totals; columns by their labels. Up to 200 column groups are allowed — put a field with many values in Rows instead. The page shows the first 300 rows and 60 columns of a large pivot table; the downloads have all of them.
Limitations
- Up to about 500,000 rows (text files up to 100 MB, workbooks up to 50 MB), as far as your device’s memory allows.
- Values are read from the cells as written: a formula counts as its last saved result, and text that is not a number is left out of sums and averages.
- There are no calculated fields or custom groups of text values; add a column to the data for those.
- The download is a plain table (one header row, labels repeated), not an interactive Excel pivot table.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Pivot Table Generator shows a summary and the first rows of the result (up to 10; a single row is shown with its results hidden). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How do I make a pivot table without Excel?
Open your CSV or Excel file here, press Rows beside the field to group by (for example Region) and Values beside the field to total (for example Sales). The pivot table appears at once; add a field to Columns for a cross-tab.
How do I group dates by month or by financial year?
Put the date field in Rows or Columns and choose Month (or Week, Quarter, Year, Financial year) in its group list. For a financial year, choose the month it starts in under the options; April is set at first.
Why is the total of my averages not the sum of the rows?
Totals are worked out from all the rows they cover, as a spreadsheet pivot table does. The total of an average is the average of every row in it, which is not the sum (or the average) of the averages above it.
Can I see which rows make up a number?
Yes: click the number. The rows behind it are listed under the pivot table, with every column of your data.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The file is read and the pivot table is built in your browser, and the data stays on your device.
